Listen to the version on 801 Live at Hull and compare it to the Wembley version from Viva. It's London 4 Hull O (pun intended). - -- NP The Housemartins, Caravan of Love Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 2004 13:41:15 -0000 From: "Colette Robertson" Subject: [AVALON] FRIEZE MAGAZINE JAN/FEB 2004 If anyone is interested in seeing this article I have uploaded my scans to a webpage which can be found at http://pictures.care2.com/view/1/239766374 Cheers, Colette ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 2004 05:55:41 -0800 (PST) From: Joel Hurd Subject: Re: [AVALON] FRIEZE MAGAZINE JAN/FEB 2004 > If anyone is interested in seeing this article I have uploaded my > scans to a webpage which can be found at > http://pictures.care2.com/view/1/239766374 Thanks Colette. I thought the large leading image would be a present day picture of Mr. Ferry, not some photo from 1974? (And it reminds me of something I thought of when I saw the artwork for Frantic). Are photos of himself (near 60 years of age) too much to bear for Bryan? (Personally, at the rate I'm going I'd be delighted to look as good as Ferry when I'm 40!) . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Why? Some time in 2002, I was at a restaurant and cafe called the Gingerbread House in the city of Cork, Ireland, where I was living and working at the time. It's a self-service place that has captured a large chunk of the prized hot-quiche-with-salad market in Cork and is accordingly popular with with students and tourists. While paying, I noticed that Editions of You was playing quietly in the background. I asked the girl at the till about the music and she explained that the CD player held 10 discs and this was always one of them. She was about 16 and didn't seem too thrilled about the owner's choice of music (or anything else), to be honest. Sat upstairs, I heard Dream Home come and go, marvelling at the unlikeliness of this setting but by track 6, it quickly became impossible to continue reading my book; a tired toddler in a push-chair had begun to cry, cry, cry and nothing his embarrassed parents could do could stop his determined bawling. They walked the push-chair up and down, made soothing noises and even tried feeding him select pieces of the best Gingerbread House quiche. Nothing doing - each scream of protest was followed by a tentative pause, during which the entire restaurant would gather hope, and then another lungful. But here's the funny thing: the very moment that Ferry had caught his breath and began to deliver a sanguine promise of blue sunsets and grey lagoons, the crying stopped and the little kid even began to smile mischievously after a couple of minutes, to everyone's great relief. Clearly, the cause had been the Bogus Man all along. Junior's mum and dad never made the connection but there's no doubt in my mind: the recording contains a subliminal, electronic message of doom - probably from Professor Eno - that some of us hear more clearly than others. Parents beware. B PS I owe Arnie a (non-Roxy) trade. Sorry - utter uselessness on my part. You WILL get the discs.... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 05:22:20 +0000 From: "over pavema" Subject: [AVALON] RE: avalon-digest V9 #13 >I was watching the 2001-Roxy-dvd tonight after a nice evening out here on >Gran Canary, and I suddenly understood how extremely important Eddie Jobson >was! >Colin on keyboard & piano + Lucy Wilkins are really working hard filling >Eddie's shoes. >When you look at old Roxy videos you can see how Eddie runs back and forth >from the keyboards to the violin. >In 2001 it took 2 persons (+ sometimes 3) to manage to keep up with Eddie. > >It's really a terrible thing that he has not been credited as a composer of >"Out of the blue". >Isn't it HIS violin-solo that makes that track so outstanding??? i always like jobson's work and contributions, sort of in the same way that mick taylor contributed to the stones' best period, without ever receiving proper credit. but i do recall probably 15 - 20 years ago seeing an interview with eddie, where he was asked what his experiences in roxy music had taught him, and how had it expanded his musical horizons (i'm paraphrasing, and not all that well, i'm sure). his reply was startling to me: he said he'd gained virtually nothing from roxy music, but had gained a lot from working with frank zappa. now, i'm sure he learned a great deal from mr. z, but to have been part of roxy music for 4 lp's (including 'viva', and perhaps appearing on 'flesh + blood' or 'manifesto', though i don't have them handy and can't remember the guest players), and not have learned or gained anything of value... well, either he was just being a prick, or he was asleep for the better part of 4 years. either way, that answer seemed so stupid that i've never given him much thought at all since then. i know he did soundtrack work for don johnson's tv show, 'nash bridges', and i know he's had some solo records and been the band 'uk', blah blah blah, but i wonder does he realize that nothing he'll ever do will ever have the impact or the longevity of 'siren', 'stranded', or 'country life'... some stupid-ass advertising text probably appears right after this line, inserted by microsoft. ignore it completely. _________________________________________________________________ Check out the new MSN 9 Dial-up fast & reliable Internet access with prime features! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=dialup/home&ST=1 ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V9 #14 *************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
