That makes him more of a solo artist a la Bowie. Phil Manzanera disagreed with Ferry when we met in Copenhagen 2001, making him more of a team player I guess. In his way Ferry har surrvied when other British musicians of his generation have not, conquerring neither death, fame nor musical progress, by going his own way. Or taking his own Ferry across the Mersey if you like. I think it was. Being so conscious of his image with the public, Bryan - from the moment of his big breakthroughs with Let's Stick Together and LITD - has made a special effort to please the masses with 'easier' music. Having been a fan of easy popular music himself, I think he justified his chosen course for mainstream sounds by the aim of winning over new people to popmusic - to his own favourite popclassics, and to new compositions of his own that probably aspired to a similar status, but only half acquired it. We all know that the later, easier BF-songs are not his best - and he himself admitted that he did it primarily for the money. This way, he extended his public with a 'body' that would never appreciate the more intricate compositions of Roxy's early years. Now, when touring, he obviously and understandably wishes to satisfy both his old and his 'new' fans. What else can he do but blur the lines? By playing the old stamping Roxyhits in a BF-setting - and avoiding the subtler songs - he hopes to please all, I believe. He probably assumes that we Avalonians will accept his umptieth dishing out of Jealous Guy anyway (I always skip it on his records now). Surely, he could not sustain his lifestyle by playing Psalm and Sunset to the happy few... (On the albums RM and BF were only blurred once, if I am right. Casanova was Roxied on Country Life and Bryanised on Let's Stick Together. Any other examples?). "OLD smoothie Bryan Ferry proved that he's still got what it takes to get the town talking when he swapped his usual rock venues for a garden marquee. The Roxy Music singer wowed guests when he was booked as the surprise act for businessman Peter Donnelly's 50th birthday bash in Bowden. In an hour-and-a-half set, Ferry played Roxy favourites, Jealous Guy and Avalon as well as material from his solo career. One guest told the M.E.N.: "There had been all kinds of rumours that it was Bryan Adams or Chris Rea. "I don't think that anyone could really believe it. "Everyone there was stunned when he came on stage. To have Bryan Ferry playing in your garden is just amazing. "It was a brilliant atmosphere. Peter didn't spare any expense. It must be the biggest private party Cheshire has seen for more than 20 years, and I can't see anyone beating it to be honest. "They'll certainly be talking about it for a long time." Peter, boss of clothing retailer, Eisenegger, invited about 300 family and friends to join him for the do, which included a laser light show and entertainment from New York jazz musician, Jerome, and DJ Mark B, who has worked with J-Lo and Madonna. And the M.E.N. were told that, even with all the excitement, his neighbours weren't forgotten in the celebrations. To avoid them being disturbed, Peter offered free accommodation in a hotel of their choice on the night of the party to everyone who lives immediately around him, and many were sent huge bouquets of flowers for "putting-up" with Ferry's melodies." Further, I wonder, at which point (assuming he is aware) did Bryan Ferry decide it was to his benefit to 'confuse the general public' by blending his Roxy Music achievements with his solo music achievements - was that part of his 'master plan' or did he just play things 'by ear'? Or, did he adopt this method of cultivation because he feared his 'well was running dry'?" I think BF is either oblivious, or simply concludes that these songs are his own in any event so decides to sing them whether playing solo or with Roxy. Roxy's own lyrics are credited to Ferry with or without collaboration, therefore they are his to sing whenever. As for the general public - to most Bryan Ferry is Roxy Music. The public don't care who takes the credit, so long as they get to see/hear Ferry. And with the non-research of the press they will remain uneducated, unless they are encouraged by his performances to seek further works. Promotors and public alike want to hear the hits. Their romance, however, seems as natural as breathing. Indeed, the more you look at the latter-day Murray oeuvre, the more you see the vulnerable soul creeping from behind the suave ironist's smirk. Nowhere is this more evident than in Lost in Transtation's inevitable karaoke bar scene, where Murray sings Bryan Ferry's wistful More Than This. The fact that he cannot quite hit the notes only makes it more poignant, a moment of yearning dropped in the midst of comic revelry. "It's a very hard song to sing," he says, "especially after you've had several sakis. But the music on Avalon is some of the most romantic I've ever heard. There's just something about Avalon that shows a possibility about life and about feeling that I want to remind myself of.""
