I have other BF cd singles that are going bad. The only ones that seem to be doing this are the Virgin imports. Some are from England, some from Holland. The US Reprise versions are OK. Put a few drops on the clouded surface, then gently clean with the cotton wool. That'll clear it, not permanently, but it works. Put the disc back in the case label side down or transfer to a standard jewel case. I wrote a letter to EMI's cd manufacturing division (at EMI Swindon) about this problem way back in 1996 after reading an article about it in Record Collector magazine and discovering that I had affected discs in my own collection. The common link was CDs manufactured at EMI Swindon and packaged in digi-paks. It was them that suggested the cleaning method, although they would accept no responsibility for the deterioration of the discs, unlike Phillips/Phonogram, whose manufacturing division PDO actually offered replacements for discs manufactured up to the mid 1990s which looked as though they'd become "tea stained" (if you have the late 80s pressing of the Virgin Roxy/Ferry CDs you'll probably find this problem). PDO was swallowed up by the Universal buy-out, but the problem was identified and eliminated many years ago anyway. Discovering these worrying faults convinced me to keep hold of my vinyl (and still invest in it). The vinyl disc (as we know it) has been around for nearly 50 years and is most certainly durable. CDs are now (commercially) in their 21st year, but no one knows their actual life span. According to a report I read earlier Bryan Ferry was invited to a concert to celebrate the inauguration in the restored La Fenice Opera House in Venice, Italy but was unable to attend as 'he has a concert tonight'. He was in good company though, as George Clooney, Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino and Joe Fiennes also all pulled a no-show. La Fenice has taken seven years to literally rise from the ashes after it was destroyed in an arson attack in 1996. http://www.agi.it/english/news.pl?doc=200312152000-1197-RT1-CRO-0-NF11&page=0&id=agionline-eng.oggitalia Chris ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 12:37:09 EST From: DEAGLERR@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Defective CDs In a message dated 12/16/03 5:25:36 AM, simon.galloway@virgin.net writes: > Discovering these worrying faults convinced me to keep hold of my vinyl > (and > still invest in it). So I close my book And sighing, take a second look Sure enough - I'm quite alone Still, there's no sound So I spin-a-disc around and around And slide the needle in the groove.. I much prefer vinyl, & didn't get a CD player till fairly late in the game. I mean, the Stones & most of punk DEMAND the loud, scrachy, warm sound of records. And the covers, so much better than the skimpy little booklets. There's so much not available on Vinyl anymore, unless you get a really trashed used copy, and stuff that will never be CDd. What's a Luddite to do? Buy it all, I guess. BTW anybody have Henry Badowski's record on CD, does it exist on CD? Inquiring minds want to know Regards R Deagle ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 20:43:45 -0000 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Defective CDs Me too. This is this the Digi-Pack with Jealous Guy (live), Slave To Love (live) and The 39 Steps (Brian Eno mix). BOTH are defective, the silver has come off the CDs, after they clouded over.
