I just bought Scott Walker 4 today and am enjoying it. I like the supper-club atmosphere. I think Walker's is a biography that would be worth reading, like Ferry's. I love the fact that Walker "became" European, he adopted a set of characteristics based on a culture that fascinated him, part myth part reality. > > Walker is an acknowledged influence on many artists - Julian Cope, Marc > Almond, Bono, Jarvis Cocker, and undoubtedly an influence on David Bowie, > from early on in his career with the exploration of Jacques Brel, to the > more recent past, including a cover of Nite Flights and Bowie's increasingly > similar vocal style. Another SW influence - Nick Cave, thinking of Henry's Dream or Let Love In. I definitely hear the Walker influence on Cocker. In fact I first learned about Scott Walker on the Pulp mailing list... > But listening to the classic 60s material, I wonder how much of an influence > Walker was on Ferry and Roxy? Also the way Ferry kind of modulates his voice (warbles?) is kind of Walker-esque, kind of gold-lame lounge singer. > > Just listen to Chance Meeting (especially the solo version), For Your > Pleasure, A Song For Europe, Bitter Sweet - Ferry's dramatic, resonant croon > closely echoes Walker's style. > Croon - perhaps that is better than warble. But it's not an American style croon. It's not Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. It's a European type of croon that Ferry and Walker have, in my opinion. > In the biography it mentions the sessions with Fripp, Eno and Daniel Lanois, > recorded at Phil Manzanera's studio. We're going to see him in the UK next year - so "thanks" for letting me know what the encore is.... Bit of a strange choice as I really can't imagine Seal covering this particular track, in fact off the top of my head I can't imagine Seal covering any Ferry tracks. So....did he kill the song or was it ok? Aleks __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! There are some artists who do change their setlists during a tour...I know it will be hard to believe, but they do exist. Don't Stop The Dance was a highlight of the show for me, along with the "hits". (Crazy, and whatever you call his new hit. Expanded to concert length Kiss From A Rose sounded a bit silly. (kiss that freakin' rose, already) Seal came back for the first encore and introduced Don't Stop by asking if the audience wanted to dance. An extra bonus was that I was the only one who knew the words & could sing along. (Joking, I hate when the audience sings along, and that was RAMPANT at this show. Goodie's right the encore will probably be Wooly Bully by the time you see him. My problem was with the hall. Your average train station platform has better acoustics, than the Hammerstein Ballroom. To see you need to be near the front, but the sound is mixed on the floor in the back. Speakers overhead 1/3 of the way from the stage to the rear of the hall, and no sound deadening system. Similar to the odd sound set up at Radio City for the Roxy show this summer, but FAR more echo-ey. The barn was built as a theater for stage plays in the 30s. The Show was probably better than it felt to me, as Mr. Seal and his 5 piece backup band DID work their collective asses off. Well I'm still around, but prefer to repeat what I wrote to this list 3 years ago. This was ny first post to Avalon !: 'I was surprised at how strong feelings some of you have against BF's appearance at the Miss World contest... I agree with Chris Turner in every word he says about this 'case'! Why should Bryan not accept such an opportunity to be seen in 130 countries, and even be well paid for it! Thanks God, that he's not that snobbish and foolish. I agree that this show is horrible, and so is the Jerry, but are the calculated two billion viewers to these kind of entertainment not worthy to look at our own god? Is he just ment for an exclusive group like us avalonians and other highbrows? Do we not want him to get new admirers amongst ordinary people to buy his music? I don't think Bryan can afford to be that selective. I believe in that he knows best what he can allow and not allow himself to do on stage,....and maybe he couldn't resist the thought of beeing the center of all these young, beautiful and glammy girls? In my eyes he looked absolutely perfect up there, and our Mister World was just doing his job, as you know is to entertain. That's nothing to be ashamed of, is it? An artist has to sell himself, you know, to all that want to buy. I beg all of you critics to criticize my english not too hard. I'm just an ordinary old woman from Norway who loves Bryan for his voice, music, arrangements, lyrics, looks, coolness, warmth, humour, irony, politeness, honesty...and More Than This. Do I feel empathy? Oh yes! Kari... I still do...... ks ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V8 #338 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
