I was listening to the Ken Bruce show on Radio 2 yesterday and he's got Kevin Rowland (Dexy's Midnight Runners) picking his fave songs all week, a feature called The Tracks Of My Years. Anyway, yesterday it was two Roxy tracks back to back - Beauty Queen and Just Like You, the first time I've heard either on the radio. And they sounded bloody marvellous! It's always nice to be taken by surprise, makes it that much more special. Kevin Rowland spoke about his passion for Roxy, how they were his ultimate band and that Ferry never gets the full credit he deserves (deserved?) for his yearning, soul-searching lyrics. He said that either of those songs could have been singles and really changed perceptions of Roxy as a chart pop band. Tomorrow his choices include Wooly Bully... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/bruce/tracks/index.shtml?thisweek SimonG ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2003 13:47:23 -0000 From: "Mandy" Subject: [AVALON] Australia and New Zealand Tickets on sale - so is anyone from the UK going to be travelling over there. I bought Avalon again because I had just purchased a new SACD machine. The rest of the disc plays just fine. I tried playing it on a conventional machine as well. No luck. Just a thought, as it's a hybrid, and if you're not getting the last track, it may be because the player is only reading the ordinary stereo version which is also there and doesn't contain 'AU'. Which is a shame as it's stunning in surround, as is the rest of the album :) If this sounds smug, let me reveal that whilst I have all the tracks of Avalon SACD, my own newish SONY player has given up playing dvds at all. When I played Avalon the first time, I was a bit disappointed that it didn't sound more "stunning." I've tried changing every conceivable setting, and even though the digital readout says "SACD," I'm still "always unhearing." However - you should be watching out for Mr Mackay popping up over your right shoulder occasionally. It's terribly clear, the isolation of the instruments, but the blending of the ambient sounds is clever enough to not make this jarring. If you can hear any of it, of course, which now neither of us can. Lee S ____________________________________________ Easily distracted? Displacement activity a problem? Me too. I remember reading an interview with Kevin Rowlands years ago in which he said that "Beauty Queen" was the best soul song ever written, how right he was. All my other SACD play just fine out of 2.0. I'm still confused as to why the Pioneer 635-A only plays/recognizes the first 10 tracks and not track 11? It shouldn't be this complicated. Or is it the other way around. Is Always Unknowing a 5.1 mix and not a 2.0 SACD mix. Therefore, the player won't recognize it unti I have the digital coaxial connection from the player to the receiver hooked-up? And what about all the poor bastards who still can't figure out how to set the clock on their VCR???
