They appeared (if memory serves) in the outfits fom FYP, with Ferry (at least) facing away from audience, whipping around to sing opening line. He then pointed directly at camera for 'follow you'. Knowing TOTP there was probably some visual FX applied to the sax solo which would have left me screaming with rage. If it was, it's been burned from my mind. Anybody else confirm these recollections? You can always see our recreation of this glorious Pyjamarama stuff tonight (Wed 26th) - Foxy-Music at the Carling Acadamy Islington from 8 onwards! Long since scrubbed from the BBC Archives apparently, though sometimes these things do have a habit of turning up eventually (ala the infamous Twiggy appearance shown at AMA1 !). It could be one of two versions, one from May 1979, or one recorded for the Xmas show that year. Pyjamarama was screened twice on TOTP, firstly on the 15th of March 1973 and introduced by Tony Blackburn. The same clip was repeated on the 5th of April, 1973. Sadly neither show remains in the archives. AIWIY has been shown several times on TOTP2. There are four Roxy TOTP performances that have been lost to the world - Pyjamarama, Street Life, Love Is The Drug, and an alternate performance of All I Want Is You. It was however discovered by a BBC archivist, appended to a long tape about steam engines. Several priceless black and white episodes of Dad's Army from the 1960's were also found by an enthusiast. I certainly would like to hear those versions, and why it was he thought that it hadn't worked. Another canvas turned to the wall I guess. Dance Away was really the song that relaunched the 1979 incarnation of RM, after the inexplicable and disastrous decision to release Trash as the first single from Manifesto (I heard BF comment "...it was trash.." on TV once). Had Ferry been successful with Dance Away as a solo artist, would he have even reformed RM? And without DA, would RM's career have been dead in the water? Of all the turning points in Bryan's career, I would suggest that the release of Dance Away was the most significant. RM needed a hit, and DA provided a huge resurgence of popular interest in the band, and a change in musical direction that preoccupied him for 15 years. The only comparable watershed I can think of, is his recent return to form and live appearances, after a decade of substandard work and broken projects, which has given him his highest public profile in donkey's years. Renaissance man indeed. Chris ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? Get the FREE Yahoo!
