I still have the review of 2nd H from the Sounds and it is full of references to Roxy, the headline being "Ferry Deaf, Ferry promising." Of course this holds true for BF IF his process IS natural! ... but then he has had 'unnatural' things applied to his person, so who really knows... Further, in support of Theresa's proposal that Mr. Ferry 'is a lazy man' I present the following reprint of an entry posted to 'The Pill Box' Blogspot earlier this year as written by Ian Penman: 'THE WAKE-UP CALL: The realization of dream elements in the course of waking up is the canon of dialectics. The never-ending disappointment, the utter disillusionment is a big part of what makes the music so poignant underneath the wit and aural beauty. There is a depth in that bleakness. Richard and I went to Telford last night. Considering this was only the 2nd gig for the band, we were suitably impressed. Richard's not a particular Roxy/Bryan fan, whereas they've been the Main Thing for me since 1972, hence two different types of people, who came to similar conclusions about the show. A good night's entertainment, at a relatively cheap cost, listening to the music you love (or you know because you've had it drummed into you for years and years and years.....) On entering the auditorium the stage might well have been a Roxy stage, complete with the ballroom globe (technical name escapes me!). The band members appeared to enjoy themselves, (9 altogether) all of them contributing. I don't remember all of of their names, but I'm sure you can find out on their website, www.bryanferrytribute.com. The show lasted over two hours and the band played 23 songs, plus 2 for the encore, a good mixture. The fast tracks were more enjoyable than the slower ones. In particular If There Is Something and Ladytron were outstanding, but there were the expected oos and ahs when the hits were played. I'm not going into the set list, but do have one if anyone is interested - it might persuade you to go (I also have a copy of the flyer - you can see the similarity between Bryan Ferry and Bryan Avalon). All I will say is, as far as Roxy are concerned, the only album not represented is Country Life. The musicianship was excellent throughout. Bryan Avalon is not Bryan Ferry, but once you accept this, it's no effort to thoroughly enjoy his singing. Let's face it, nobody is ever going to be Bryan Ferry, we enjoy him because of his uniqueness. The thing for me is, normally I would be over critical and never would I accept that someone was even close. Not so, last night, and I look forward to the next time. I think nerves were evident at times, and really there's no need. Bryan Avalon works. We were not disappointed by the band at all. True - there is only one Roxy, but this was a near as you could get (always remembering I can't comment on ReMake ReModel!). Lee is outstanding - so much so that I can only reiterate the comment in the Peterborough review which states that if you closed your eyes, it could have been Andy. Fabulous. The girls were very good, particularly Nicky on Avalon. The surprise in the encore made me laugh too, and I'd like to mention it - it just might tempt one or two of you......However, as the Peterborough review kept you in the dark, I will too. Suffice to say that it involves one of the girls...... Whether the evening was a success is doubtful in terms of any financial reward. The missing ingredient was - the audience. It was a very disappointing turn out. We spoke to as many people as we could and found them to be a mixture of diehard Roxy/Ferry fans, or people just out for an evening's entertainment. Very difficult for the band to choose a set list in these circumstances. Not simply a case of who to please, but who to tempt into buying a ticket. I'd like to see them in a year or so, when they've conquered their nerves, got a few perfomances in, and more than a few people appreciating their efforts. It would be awful if they folded on account of low audience numbers, or simply running out of cash. They're promoting themselves. We're not going to get to see Roxy every few months (even though we do all have fingers and toes crossed), but this is an adequate substitute for a good evening's entertainment. Most of us enjoy the social aspect of Roxy/Ferry tours, getting together with old friends, making new ones. Why not do it with Foxy? We'd get to see one another. We're not going to be disappointed because there's no new material, because they only do copies anyway. Oh, and if Mark Stephens is going to go ahead with arranging a Midlands get together, he could do worse than approach the band. Please - get out there, support them. You've nothing to lose except a few pounds. I've met some very nice people here on Avalon and I'm sure we'd all encourage one another if possible - here's your chance. Don't expect Roxy, but do expect a good night out. I only hope he does not hold regrets about his past. "The never-ending disappointment, the utter disillusionment is a big part of what makes the music so poignant underneath the wit and aural beauty. Regarding style the devil, as always, is in the detail. RP was handsome but was he really cool? He crooned, he swayed, he had tonsils you could trust. But somehow he was always prjt a porter to Bryan's Saville Row. Folks complain about the Bryan's lack of audience connection but, having seen Robert many times I can confirm that the Barnsley boy was considerably more aloof. Finally, a comparison of their respective attitudes to women. Am I alone in regarding RP's portrayal of women in album covers and videos (etc) as different from Bryan? RP always controlling, Bryan usually submissive / masochistic. (Bryan as chauffeur, as sailor to Siren wail; Robert looking across the bedroom as a one-night stand departs, surrounding himself with compliant models blah blah.) These Northern lads are rabbits in the headlights when they meet posh metropolitan totty! Given all this I shall now put Best Of Both Worlds on the deck, and slip the needle in the groove ...RIP soulboy, charmer.... pip, pip, Martino - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Jocelynfiske@aol.com Sent: 26 September 2003 17:49 To: Susan Stekel; avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Palmer RIP Very sad to hear the news that Robert Palmer has died. I loved his earlier more soulful stuff and saw him a number of times on stage where he hardly moved a muscle. Judging by his later day portly girth and his long time chain smoking, it looks like it finally caught up with him. Now if Bryan can finally master the gears on that sporting bike he may extend his years as opposed to him going the Nico way. And Susan, enjoy Goldfarpp tonight, I caught them last week in New York and they were brilliant.
