LOL!!! I've been wondering what that was. Now that you mention it, my 64 oz. Slurpie does fit nicely there. Wonder if he's figured out the cup holder thingy, bet it would make pc-ing a more positive experience for him. I think this computer aided world wide web thing just might take off. Imagine, all the world - a 7-11 24/365. The globe never sounded so schlushy. All together now... I suspect you overestimate my knowledge though. I actually haven't a clue how an anti-virus program works, I'm just not dumb enough not to have garnered the knowledge that I need one. After all virus warnings are in the newspapers and on our TV bulletins on an almost daily basis. Often the difference between the 'computer literate' and the 'DFU' is just a search engine and ten minutes reading away. A quick search for 'anti virus' on Google returned 2,290,000 results in 0.08 seconds. You know, if people ever start using it, this Internet thing could really catch on... One last tip for y'all, a FREE and first-class firewall program is available here: http://www.zonelabs.com The free version doesn't have as many knobs on as its grown-up brothers, but it will work perfectly well. For the uninitiated, the Windows operating system is susceptible to attacks which, in extreme circumstances, can allow someone to remotely access your machine and the information on it for malicious purposes. A firewall can preclude these attacks. Apologies for the off-topic post, you are now being returned to your normal programming... Regards Chris (DFU, self taught. I know how to check the oil though) PS, the propeller heads in my office would find it hilarious to see me described as 'computer literate' I'm seen as some kind of 'admin droid'. Anyone with an always-on broadband connection (cable modem, DSL) should spend $60 on a router from D-Link and hook it between the Internet and his/her computer. A firewall is entirely different from antivirus software, which should be installed on everybody's computer regardless of their method of connecting to the internet. Anyone with a dialup internet connection need not worry about a firewall, but anyone with a computer should have antivirus software (McAfee or Norton Antivirus, e.g.). ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 03:23:17 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: [AVALON] For UK soccer fans only... In the Newcastle suburbs of Hebburn, Wallsend, Jarrow and South Kensington tonight soccer fans were crying into their chips as the expensively assembled talents of Newcastle United were ejected from the lucrative Champions League by lowly Parmesan Baghdad. Instead of appearing at the soccer cathedrals of the San Siro, Milan or the Nou Camp, Barcelona, Newcastle are likely to be visiting the more parochial delights of primitive cultures such as Albania, Azabaijan and Scotland. Failure to qualify for the later (well lets face it, the early) stages of the competition mean that the doughty Northerners will be forgoing the millions on offer in preference to the 72p first prize available in the Uefa Daf Leyland Van Wing Mirror Shield. Newcastle, famously supported when it's trendy by working class Northerner Bryan Ferry, were unable to break down the resistance of the Moldovan champions who included two taxi drivers, a bricklayer, a tax inspector and a couple of nuns in their line-up, although Newcastle did field Titus Bramble to even things up. The defeat came despite the efforts of 54 year old striking leg-end Alan Shearer who eschewed his normal tactic of kidney-punching the centre-back and elbowing the nearest defender in the face before tapping in from two feet in favour of a new, more aggressive style. Shearer, who was clearly missing the presence of his cheeky, laugh-a-minute partner Craig Belligerently, missed his only clear opportunity in the penalty shoot-out when his brave effort narrowly missed the goal, although his shot did collide with Mars as it came its closest to Earth in over 600,000 years. By coincidence this was the last time Newcastle were in contention for a major trophy. Manager Sir Bobby Robson commented: 'Have you seen my Werthers Originals?' before adding 'I'm ninety-two you know!" Robson was famously denied a Cup win with Newcastle when he saw his goal-bound shot strike a suffragette on the goal-line. "If only that bloody Zeppelin hadn't put me off..." Newcastle, who have considered a name-change to Butlins as their season also ends in September, now have only their Xmas party to look forward to. After reports that Woodgate, Bowyer, Jenas, Dyer, Shearer, Craig Baloney and Olivier Bernard are all likely to attend, Newcastle police are thought to be considering introducing a shoot-to-kill policy. Working class Northerner Bryan Ferry commented: "Howay the Baggies! I'm not upset. As a working-class Northerner I've always loved soccerball, and my favourite team has been Newcastle City for months. They're so Northern and working class, just like me...well, to be honest I'm thinking of changing again to West Brom United. Black and white stripes are so passe and I find the guacamole in the local fish restaurant always tastes of peas" Chris ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 04:35:18 +0200 From: f2hb@wanadoo.nl (2HB) Subject: RE: [AVALON] Virus precautions At 00:38 28-08-2003 +0100, Chris Turner wrote: >PPS Bryan Ferry Office is equipped with iMacs, so BF won't be picking up >any nasty infections...(no snickering at the back please...)
