In the past 18 hours, *over 100* virus-infected messages containing this worm have been sent to the list (caught by the list software), and my inbox is continuing to be filled up with the bounced messages this morning. I need for everyone to check their systems immediately, and especially those using the above-named services. It's most likely the W32/Sobig.f@MM worm. This virus propagates itself by sending email from infected machines to addresses it finds in the local address book or internet cache, and uses some of these addresses to forge the 'From: ' address. For more information, see: http://www.msnbc.com/news/954470.asp?0cv=CB10 http://news.com.com/2100-1002_3-5065494.html?tag=fd_top http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=100561 http://www.lurhq.com/sobig-e.html The list has been sent approximately 100 MORE virus infected messages since I wrote this morning. I need everyone to do a virus scan NOW please. I may have to shut the list down. Point well taken, David, if one's source of 'news' is limited to that which is disseminated by the companies of media conglomerates. However, worldwide, there exists a vast and overwhelmingly abundant proliferation of 'news, opinions and observations' that are easily accessed by wee mere individuals who care to expend a bit of effort in our attempts to more fully make sense of the world and its happenings. Again, the consumer of 'news' must use 'critical thinking and intelligence' while sifting through the various perspectives. I found Eno's recent comments particularly amusing. What was his agenda? Does he know the book's authors personally, was he paid to write the promotional piece, maybe did it as a 'favor' to some party in return for? Further, Eno's recant of the conversation he had with the Russian diplomat's son was incredible. Not only did Eno display a superficial understanding of what the Russian said, he totally ignored the man's relative position within Soviet society (pre Russian society) and how that formed his opinion on the matter. The context of Eno's comments struck me as something naive and poorly thought out. The article's news source's agenda was very apparent by the inclusion of their little dig 'dear reader, it was a while ago, but we told you so - you are being manipulated by our governments, yada, yada, aren't we a smart news outlet!'. Upon reading that, I had to ask myself 'just who is trying to manipulate who?'. Best wishes. Unfortunately I unknowingly picked the worst time to make this change since Harvard's servers have been hit badly by the Sobig worm and so I am unable to receive any emails from that address right now. In the meantime, if you emailed me today and I did not reply or you need to reach me in the next couple of day, please continue to use my rbatty@pacbell.net address. I'll send another email out when the Harvard address is working. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Enron is complicated stuff (millions ripped off from everyday people ... nobody prosecuted yet!) but anthrax in the mail is easy to understand. never-mind that someone can shut down the government (and only target the Democrats) and get away with it ... there's always th "next big story of fear". maybe we'll even color-code the fear level (a brilliant piece of "prop-agenda" - even the illiterate are susceptible). the existence of Rampton & Stauber doesn't mean the deck isn't stacked. read Joe Conason's new book, "The Big Lies" for a good perspective on the nature of the problem. james KB Porter wrote: > "It isn't just propaganda any more, it's 'prop-agenda '." > > Propaganda has ALWAYS been agenda driven.
