There are people that prefer Bryan Ferry solo then Roxy Music. I know one of them well, she popped in to my work place a few minutes ago and wears the same kind of brand on her ring finger that I do. She also has the last surname. From time to time my wife and I disagree on things, but we have agreed to disagree on IEDHAH, I love it, she thinks it's weird. I am not as fond of Ferry's solo stuff from the 1983 disintegration of Roxy Music to 1994's Mamouna as she is. On the other hand, I did not discover Ferry from listening to his music through the speakers as she did. I've missed 3 Ferry shows in Sweden since joining Avalon, but caught Roxy Music in Copenhagen. I like the Roxy stuff better, but I don't dislike Ferry solo. The missing stuff for me are Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson. BTW, for those of you that have BBC Prime on cable, do not miss today Friday's Parkinson where Tom Hanks and David Boweie are guests. It's funny and Bowie preforms Life on Mars and Everybody says hi. From Bill MacCormick at manzanera.com: "It isn't a 'tour'. They were asked to play Hyde Park and, initially, said no. Then Portugal came in and they agreed to do both. When word went out that they were playing offers came in from other places. There is no overall promoter as in 2001." It certainly explains the somewhat shambolic nature of the whole thing and the "choice" of venues. And yes, Mark, based on his comments in the Uncut interview and elsewhere it seems Bryan does not want to live in the real world at the moment and touring suits him very nicely thank you. I wasn't nearly as hyped up for this one as for the 2001 show. That time, I had never seen them before, and never thought I'd get too, so I was nearly in ecstacy before the show ever started. Last night, I was much more laid back, even through the first few numbers. Long about OOTB, I really got energized and just had a grand ol' time the rest of the night. I've got to say, I think they were just fantastic. A lot of negative things have been said in the list over the last couple of months...why are they touring, why are the tickets so expensive, it's the same old setlist, and so forth. If you stayed home on account of that, you missed a wonderful evening from one of the most talented and original bands in the history of rock. So many times, such as during ASFE and SL, I was struck by how classic yet fresh and vibrant this music is. Their old stuff has such energy and panache, and their "new" stuff is still better than 99% of what you hear on the radio today--keep that in perspective. I don't get bored during Avalon or Jealous Guy. Plus, those two are their best-known-in-America song and only #1 single, respectively, so you can't expect them not to play them. I also like that they embrace all eras of their career and don't ignore albums just because they're not currently touring with the same personnel, like, say, Yes does. And for a bunch of old guys they play--and sing!--very well, and are obviously into what they're doing. I got a kick out of the two Nancy Sinatra clones go-go dancing in their white boots during Both Ends Burning--that was pretty funny. Ferry's dancing and gestures are pretty humorous too; I was trying to demonstrate them to a friend at work today and couldn't do them properly. Another highlight was hearing thousands of people singing along with (at least parts of) Love is the Drug. And in spite of what some have said, I think For Your Pleasure is a perfect ending song. Sidebar note to James: I don't know if you ended up going or not, but unless I missed something, the venue was not "draped off" in spite of what XRT said, unless they consider only being able to enter from the left side of the pavilion to be "draped off." Here in Champaign, the U of I Assembly Hall occasionally drapes off for smaller acts, and it literally hangs huge black drapes from the ceiling and cuts the place in half. Another sidebar to James, re: your disbelief at lack of outrage over the practices of Ticketmaster, Clear Channel, et al. In a country where the music industry is forcing internet service providers to turn in customers who have swapped music files over the net, there's probably more than one person out there who's afraid to say anything too negative about TM or CC for fear of being sued for libel (or is it slander? I can never remember which one is the written form). Roxy may not have filled the venue to capacity last night, but there were lots of people there, and I think they had a good time. There was lots of dancing and lots of singing along (myself among them, and for a guy w/no rhythm who can't carry a tune, that's not something I do in public a lot!). Enough rambling, I guess. As I've said before on this list, prior to 2001, I never thought I'd ever get to see Roxy Music in concert, and even after 2001, I never thought it would happen again. Now I've seen them twice, and I am grateful for that, in spite of any other circumstances. VIVA ROXY MUSIC! I would probably have attended Hyde Park if it had been held, but travelling to the US or Portugal was not on my list of priorities a few months after my mother's death and dealing with her estate. As I've said, I liked the 2001 tour when it came to Copenhagen, and I hope that we will se more concerts by Roxy Music in the future.
