But I did deliberate for days when tickets went on sale in June, as $72 is rather steep for a seat in a concrete canyon. Eventually, the music and passion won out over economic common sense. On July 23rd I received a newsletter from WXRT (co-sponsor of the Chicago show) announcing a Roxy ticket give-a-way, and special ticket sale for "WXRT VIP's" (that's anyone on their mailing list) starting the following morning at 10a.m. The seats, located in their special VIP section would sell for $15 each! I fired off an email to WXRT asking for an explanation, and have received no response, to date. So I went to the TicketMaster site to check out these special seats ... punched in the VIP password .... and pulled up two tickets located directly behind and two rows up, from the tickets I'm holding. Grand total for these "special seats": $40.70 Grand total for the "full price" tickets purchased in June: $173.40. (The TicketMaster "convenience charge" for what are practically the same seats has dropped from $19.70 for the tickets I purchased in June, down to $6.80 for the "special seats". But imagine, I'm receiving three times the convenience!!) I'm not an insider, but it seems rather obvious that the advance sale must be pathetic, so a plan was hatched in a desperate attempt to cut their losses, while allowing Roxy's most loyal fans to do the financial heavy lifting. I wouldn't be surprised to find the fingerprints of the promoter, Clear Channel, all over this mess, with WXRT nothing but a co-conspirator under heavy duress. In over 30 years of concert-going, I've experienced my share of horror stories, but this one is the deal-breaker. To that end, are there any attorney's out there who can advise as to whether there is anything of an illegal nature in this situation (price gouging, use of a "loss leader") that would provide basis for a class action suit? Are there any Roxy fans sitting in the same sinking boat willing to make Clear Channel (?) accountable? It breaks my heart that Roxy Music is connected to this mess. Moreover, their concert which I've anticipated with great joy, I no longer even care to attend, and that's the saddest part of the story. After reading the recent postings about Roxy's current US/Canadian jaunt you wonder why they bother wasting their time, money and effort touring places that are not the slightest bit interested in them. Roxy/BF have been in the music business for over 30 years, yet if you had to ask your average American who they were 90% wouldn't have heard of them. If they were, at best, a cult band in the US in their most successful period 73-75, what chance have they got selling out venues now? Why didn't they do a short British tour playing places like Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, etc. to real appreciative fans? It seems BF will never learn. I was potentially coming to the UK to catch the Ratdog tour(very iffy for me)at the end of August, if not then, possibly later with a friend to mini-tour Amsterdam, Paris, and London. When will the Bry play some UK dates again? JF ... most of the comments in your post, I would agree with (in varying degrees). But that's not to say the band doesn't have a following in the States, nor that a "smart tour" ... one which recognizes the realities of the market ... couldn't be profitable. "If they were, at best, a cult band in the US in their most successful period 73-75, what chance have they got selling out venues now?" That depends on the venues. I've seen every BF solo tour that has stopped in either Chicago or Milwaukee, starting with "Boys and Girls" and they were all sell-outs, or near capacity. Most importantly, they were all booked into theatres with good - excellent sound, and generally good sight-lines. There are few bands I can think of that will sell-out a 30,000 seat, cement pit, such as the Tweeter Center in Chicago. Especially in the midst of an extremely active summer concert season, such as this year has been. It would be sad, if Roxy/BF were to abandon the fans in America based on poor judgement in booking. I'm truly curious (and ignorant); if the band were to play a show in Newcastle or Liverpool, on average, how many people would they be playing to? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2003 05:20:49 +0200 From: "Kari Solberg" Subject: [AVALON] 2 for the price of 1 I'm on the digest, so I guess you all already knows this?
