From: Dave Taylor The question is, why would a man who values his privacy with such passion visit a PUBLIC house - on successive days ? Of course, we're all aware there ain't no such thing as bad publicity............. - -------------------------------------------- I can't help but wonder if would rather have overheard the ladies say, "Didn't he used to be Bryan Ferry?" Judy - -------------------------------------------- Wowie and a double helping of zowie! It appears Ive missed a whole bunch of stuff while on holiday in Portugal! So whats our Bryan been up to then? I cant get the jist from the posts above (visiting a public house on consecutive days? whats new there then... public convenience and i might be worried!) an is it really for the Avalon list to start moralising... ('couse it is - LET'S HAVE IT!).... Anyway - the Live CD... I relented and bought it whilst on holiday thus providing a bit of music round the pool of the villa (standards of living rising by the moment!) and something to sup my Baileys to and y'know it's not all bad as it goes to the point Id say it serves as a great Best Of (without milking fans for the same old same old again) and also provides great renditions of some of the material - now granted More Than This sounds dreadful in its new key and If There Is Something is missing... well, the tempo changes from Viva (much more dramatic and involving) - somewhat bland just plodding along but there are some great moments - Now I understand the process of redoing vocals etc (or a bit of patching up) and it has to be said that Mr Ferry was working overtime on this one (compare to the DVD or any bootleg!) but having said that it makes for a better listen (even my missus can stomach it and she HATES 'em!) - Has to be said though the main bones of the albums success rests on two guys - - Manzanera and Thompson whos at times lethal playing does rescue some of the material from the sludgy place some refored bands tend to drift (where the songs are so clean and sanitized you caould eat yer dinner off em)- Ladytron in particular is in top form... gets an 8 out of ten from me after listening - though I would say the Viva versions of OOTB and BEB are yet to be beaten in any setting.... Anyway - hope everyones in good shape and shame to hear about Hyde Park (hahahaha if I cant go you cant either!) - All the best Chris Clare ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2003 04:37:12 -0500 (CDT) From: MarlanaK@webtv.net (M.M.K.) Just because you are famous you should not have to resort to being a recluse and never go anywhere. Waiting for an autograph after the show is part of the show, and something that is expected of the artist, and something that the artist knows is expected of him. It is a totally different setting. But if you go somewhere not connected with your career, ie to a pub, I think it is only polite to leave the artist alone, or at least be more discreet in the approach if you must approach them. " Well... If Bryan Ferry sits in a public restaurant and three ladies come up to him, I think he should only worry if they are brandishing gleaming weapons and are simultaneously muttering the phrase "Cheeky Chimps Chomp Cheap Chop Suey" in rapid succession! ;) Kidding aside, this issue is much like the 'to stand or not to stand at a concert' issue .... there probably is no 'right or wrong' answer in the gray area. The 'gray area' is necessarily governed by common sense coupled with common courtesy: Of course, if the ladies did something on the 'extreme' side of things, such as the above (the cheeky chimp bit), then I'd say they were out of line. But, as Richard suggested, had the women treated Mr. Ferry to a drink, delivered by an employed server, with the ladies' phonenumber(s) and a polite question written upon a cocktail napkin to 'test the water', that would have been a 'classier' approach to their end. Still, to some people that 'classier' approach would remain objectionable - nothing short of leaving BF undisturbed in his solitude would suffice. I think Bryan Ferry could only claim 'inappropriate fan behavior!' to have occurred if he had been subjected to behavior that 'ordinary people', such as you and I, might possibly face while out in public (which, unfortunately, is basically anything nowadays). He has the same recourses available to his defense as we do. Therefore we are all at the mercy of strangers and a few friends when we venture off our property. May God help us all! I tend to think the 'pub incident' was overblown in the press and was merely exploited as a means of publicity! Or perhaps, Colleen's 'conspiracy theory' virally transmitted overline; it turns out that BF's 'handlers' engineered this 'disgraceful' event for their benefit - to retain control over Mr. Ferry by reinforcing the idea that all fans are not to be trusted and are evil with hidden agendas (possibly not too far from the truth, actually, now that I think about it!)! What I'd really like to know is this: Does an 'unauthorized' copy of the official lyrics to all the songs on "Horoscope" and "Alphaville" exist, or any portion thereof? Or are we to be left with our guesswork? - I suppose we all could just sing our own versions of a given song together, without care, provided the group carries the tune. N'est pas? Ain't that so? Best wishes. Speaking as someone who served Mr Ferry a drink recently I feel I am well placed to sort this whole issue out. Have any of you guys ever been to a British Pub? No chance of waiter service I can assure you. Having bumped into Mr Ferry in a well known London shop on the afternoon of his Albert Hall concert last year I can tell you he is happy to be recognised. A polite handshake, a word of admiration (along the lines of good luck with tonights show or I liked the latest album( yes sometimes you have to tell a fib)) and as long as you don't make a nusiance of yourself theres no problem. Had he been with his kids or family then I would have steered clear. Here are some of my off the cuff remarks: "*Need a space to think about it Just a chance to dream" vs. "Neatest way is, to think about it - Just a chance to dream." You might be spot on there, Richard! 'Need a space'... I had settled on "neatest way is, to think about it" as a way of making the stanza coherent, that is, 'if I could kill her, the neatest way to do it would be... I'm dreaming, fantasizing about how I'd do the deed'. An 'unofficial' official lyric sheet could come in handy here? "There was some discussion of "FIZZY WATER" a while back. I think it references Champagne, "bubbly" = high life." I tend to interpret this entire stanza to address the 'sweetness of making up after the fight' hence sweet inside the bitter pill. The 'bitter pill' transitions us to 'seltzer' - 'fizzy water' is analogous to an unsettled and tumultuous relationship. - Once you've experience the thrill and agony of the 'love war' you ?'want no still'? or 'want it still'? or ?'won't want still'? - well, either way, want more of it or can't stand anymore of it... lyric sheet anyone???! I need a lyric sheet!!!
