I've read the >press release and frankly I'll stick with my remastered cd thanks... I agree. SACD and 5.1 audio is dead on arrival. It's a format for a person who has no family/no friends/ no dogs/no cats and can put all 6 speakers in a perfect location and then sit exactly in the correct position. Seems kinda silly to me. I believe most concerts still put the speaker racks on the front left and right side of the stage. Granted if I was 25 and single with no kids I'd probably have the ultimate set up to impress my friends. But, now I really can't be bothered by it all. Remember quadrophonic? Ok, 5.1 for theater/movies now that's a different story.... It would not be difficult to support the investment in the enhanced sound with a few quotes from people at the original recording session or some photos. There is no need to be abusive to any fellow Avalonian, no matter what their opinions or perceived character traits. Paula's point about comparative sales highlights a chicken and egg situation. In the 70s, Bowie and Ferry were probably neck and neck at times when it came to UK sales. It could be argued that Bowie's sense of self-importance has extended the career by building up the back catalogue with enhanced reissues while trying to remain contemporary in the new stuff. Meanwhile, Ferry's reissues have been many but lacklustre and his attitude to studio work has resulted in very few recordings that have become more and more retro. Consequently, Bowie's sales have consolidated while Ferry flounders commercially. To say that the reissue programme and an official website that informs fans aren't affordable now because of scarce resources might be the wrong way round - maybe Ferry is in the situation he is in now because of scant attention to detail and/or consideration to the needs of fans by the record companies? Who is Louise Nevilson? I imagine the price of the SACD is more than Dark Side of the Moon because of their comparative sales, but once again I imagine that the DSOTM reissue sold many many more because of the low bargain price which will have seduced the mildly curious as well as the committed fan/collector. I attended the BBC Radio 2 live debate on the state of the music industry last week and the grasp of economics by people working in the record industry is appalling. It's possibly the only business that has survived for 40 years while charging customers a 6,000 per cent mark-up (based on UK high street retail prices) on the cost of production. Mick Hucknall claims that in the same time as he made 10 million pounds from Simply Red record releases, Warner Bros made 190 million. It really is time that the software manufacturers stopped bleating about feeling the pinch, complaining about how copying of vinyl to cassette/downloading from the Internet affects their profit margins and spending quite so much money promoting the releases of the Pop Idol/American Idol artists and the other manufactured boy bands/girl bands/boy and girl bands. When there are clearly artists out there worthy of investment for reasons other than safe return on outlay, the music industry could be less spendthrift in the same area all the time and be more generous with the ridiculous largesse that still exists today. No-one is suggesting that the industry rids itself of Britney or Justin, but they could transfer some of the income from these to other artists in need of a leg-up. You think only people with weight problems have personal odour issues? Wrong!
