Saw Boz Scaggs in a little club here last year (or the year before?) and really liked him. His last album Dig is one of my favourites of last year. If you get the chance to see Solomon Burke live, do not miss him. Amazing voice and amazing performance, very funny as well And on topic: I liked the You Can Dance thread KB started. especially because of the notes. We had that years ago talking about Mother of Pearl, Three and nine, song for Europe. Isn't it an idea to reinvent the song of the week idea to explore all those lyrics? Starting with Re make. Good reason to stay here for the next three years. About the live album: really disappointing they've mixed all the rough edges out of it. Listen to the bbc recording of Both ends burning. The harmonica of ferry in a battle with the guitar of spedding: firework and on 2001 live: a wet match. . the solo of Lucy on OOTB completely lost. But the most depressing is More than this sooooo boring. This isn't the roxy I've seen the last tour. This may be a reflection of how few Avalon members were going, but I wonder if (like me) those who were going were, in a way, not surprised when the news of cancellation fell? From the moment the concert was announced, I have responded in two opposite ways: excitement at another Roxy show (and at the time of announcement, possibly the last ever) together with disbelief that a band that failed to sell out any of their three nights at Wembley Arena (a smaller venue) should have the self-belief that they could sell an OUTSIDE London venue almost twice as big. Since then, the US continent shows have been announced rendering the date of the London show less significant and I was left with visions of large empty spaces across a cavernous arena in broad daylight. NOT the most enticing of anticipations. So it is now with a heavy heart that I learn I am not going to see Roxy again, possibly ever, but lightened somewhat that I don't have to make the decision whether to turn up early to see the first support band, what to do to avoid seeing the Dandy Warhols (a band that was deathly dull when they supported Bowie last year in London and has, rather frighteningly, been booked for every European show Bowie is playing this autumn - how many of the sins of my past lives are to be punished in this way?) only to watch Roxy Music play a show in THE WRONG LOCATION. The refund when it eventually comes back to me will be gratefully received (European tour to follow and finance) and, in a kind of way, I am relieved that the show need not go on. But not due to any criticism of the Roxy boys (and nowadays girls) other than their reliance upon a promoter who weren't equipped to stage a show on this scale but presumably needed to if they were to raise the level of income required for the band to strap on guitars, saxes and cummerbunds and do it one more time for the punters. I liked the result Hell freezes over. Roxy Music did not perferm some new songs in 2001, nor did they play any solo material, or any surprising covers like Like a hurricane. I for one is more of a Roxy fan then a Ferry fan, and his latest set lists do not lure me to go to concerts. In order for a band to stay fresh they have to surprise. Coldplay are great on record, but boring live, being upfronted by East LA outfit Los Lobos at this year's Roskilde festival. Los Lobos were on before Iron Maiden and got the Maiden fans dancing in the isles my friend reported. Simple Minds failed at their only arena gig in Sweden and is a has-been act ever since, demoted to playing small venues, losing a hardcore fan like my wife in the process. Springsteen draws some 250,000 in Scandinavia alone, playing songs from The Rising and not turning into a nostalgia act like, I am sad to write, Roxy Music. Compared with my other 70's hero Jackson Browne, Browne still makes good albums and is great live. Roxy is recycled enlessly and not all of us were delighted with the 2001 tour (I was). I enjoy Roxy Music, I hope to see them live again. But Hyde park was not in the cards. Am I sad? No, not really, life goes on. Now I am going to watch the world's greatest still active band on DVD. They elevate me, especially from this Boston concert. They are also the longest running, chart topping band with the same line-up and they are also the bravest, critizing people that blow up others for a living and using their fame to really try to change the world. You too might like them, despite the supermodels, the trabants and some other stuff, they have an edge to their music, in large thanks to Brian Eno producing them. The name of the band is not Talking Heads. Eno worked and played with television. I remember a story in which Verlaine accused ferry of stealing ideas from him Here it is.... TOM VERLAINE INTERVIEW by George Elliott In 1976, on assignment with CRAWDADDY MAGAZINE I met Verlaine in the midtown NYC Wartoke offices during the recording of Television's first album MARQUEE MOON (winter 1976.) This fragment survived over the years. TV: (re the Eno/Island Records-funded demo fiasco) -the only thing I can tell you about it would be bad! I mean I like Eno, I like his records... The bad thing about it is there was a very uncool A&R guy who took the tapes back to London and played 'em for every fucking artist on Island Records, so-& like I tell that to people but they don't believe it, it happens a lot, especially with the English... I mean they ripped off a whole fucking artform from Americans. And their whole esthetic is like if they hear something that's good it just sorta comes in their ear and goes out their mouth y'know-and most of 'em have the means to like set something on vinyl really quickly, crank out the stuff, so yeah, so there's a lot of lines that are on our record (MM) that might strike some people as familiar even though the songs are like 4 years old...specifically, a lot of the lines turned up on Roxy Music's SIREN record-at least a dozen! Some I got so distressed about I said 'Well FUCK! -if he's gonna take THESE lines! I mean how can I prove it, I can't prove it, right? But you know... GE Quote some, I'm very familiar with that album... TV: One of them is 'My heart stopped' and the whole band stops... GE: (quoting Ferry) 'Will it stop?' (Sentimental Fool) TV: Right, which is a move we used to do in 'Venus de Milo' ...which I got bored with and changed anyway. Another thing is 'This case is closed' at the end of - see, I only heard the album twice, I got so like pissed off when I heard it I took it out and sold it (laughing) didn't want to hear it again!... And there was this thing about little birdcalls I think on one of the songs. GE: "Nightingale" TV: Right- we used to have like a (chirp-whistles imitating a bird) kind of effect on a song called 'Prove It'...another thing is on the tape I did for Eno I did a certain style of playing piano-a certain kind of harmony with two hands- which showed up in their keyboards on I believe the second song on the first side ("End of the Line") just a certain way like- but I can't claim originality for that, it was just curious that even THAT showed up... and then we had, the song 'Venus de Milo' the whole SUBject of it is Love is a drug, I mean there's even a line in it "It's all just like a new kind of drug" -and then there's this Roxy song (chuckling) on SIREN 'Love is the Drug'! ... Bryan Ferry's known as a thief y'know, everybody sort of knows it...
