I love James. It was a good band and.. and good name to boot :)))) Does anyone know on the jaunt to America will Roxy do any television shows? Would be nice to see them on Connan O'Brien or Jay Leno. Both are real music fans and would appreciate the caliber of the likes of Roxy. Not Letterman though. He would not have clue as to who they are or their history. His musical director would, but he is a music hack. I'd hate to see him try to sneak his way into the background playing keyboards like he does with other visiting bands. It would be nice ( and I know I'm dreaming here) if maybe the band would do a Storytellers or a Soundstage ( in Chicago of course). Just a thought. Fizzy water = seltzer or carbonated water still water = non-carbonated water The meaning is actually pretty simple, albeit not a phrase commonly heard in the US. It's closest analogy? "How are you going to keep them on the farm once they've seen the city?" But I've asked them and if I hear anything to the contrary, I will certainly let you know. If any of you ever saw the first Sex Pistols documentary, DOA, you might catch a glimpse of me in it if you're quick. I've heard for decades that Spedding played on some tracks but I can no longer remember the details. The show I was at, if there was a good guitarist playing behind the curtain, it certainly didn't sound like it! The amps were burbling and fizzing and it was exciting but quite painful at times. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. (from: http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/Digests/199904/1999.04.20.05.html) Mortier "Taj Mahal" & Dance Organs by Bob Conant Dear MMDers (and Avalonians too), Regarding the Taj Mahal Organ by Mortier, it has been referred to as a band organ. It is actually a "dance organ" not a band organ. The difference may seem small as they are mechanically nearly alike but the sound is quite different. A dance organ, particularly the Belgian variety which includes most Mortiers, was voiced more quietly for indoor use and included many unique ranks of pipes such as the jazz flutes and vibra flutes which were never found on a fair or band organ. In addition, there were many other ranks such as saxophone and accordion along with a plethora of traps. These included tom-toms, wood blocks, temple blocks (tuned hollow wood blocks) and several types of cymbals and drums. These organs played music for cafes and dance halls for, guess what, dancing. The arrangements tried to emulate the big dance band sounds of the 20s and 30s and usually emphasized a heavy bass beat to aid in the dancing. Some of these organs, made by Bursens, DeCap and Mortier (pronounced More-tee-ay) were as large as 121 keys, with many of the keys used either for solo instruments like the accordion and for the many registration stops found in this type of organ. The Taj Mahal was only 101-key organ, which puts it near the middle to low end of the range for this type of organ. However, the facade is very elaborate with columns, turrets, domes and other architectural accouterments along with two life-size and larger-than-life-size carved figures. It also has many exposed imitation pipes on the front like a big church organ front. Only listened to CD 1 so far and like what I've heard! > Looking forward to the rest! I received my splendid package this week as well, might well have been tuesday too! (But my tuesday very early morning, is Eileens monday afternoon -oh, nevermind! ) And to quote a famous Avalonian: "It comes across REALLY well." Bearing in mind all that's technically possible nowadays: - - so much material to choose from (I don't know if they recorded all shows, but certainly very many..) - - so many ways of adjusting, improving, fixing things... - - so much choice in how you may give it 'an atmosphere'... I really like what has been 'fabricated'. I 'only' saw them in Werchter Belgium, and Rotterdam the Netherlands. But those memories are another story. This is a live CD! I can understand most of the critisism, but for me it sounds all right: - - nice party-sounds just before Remake-Remodel - - I like Zev's Bond-theme, Lucy's Eno-sounds in RM-RM - - it's 'interesting' how they capture Roxy's 'modern sound' in More Than This (not a favourite song of mine) - - somehow I think Bryan sounds 'youngish' on MOP - - I like the Virginia Plain! shout, well balanced between audience and backing singer - - FYP has an awesome ending, is an awesome ending "It's no Viva!" Of course not. Viva! is the first live record I ever bought. Then I thought you couldn't possibly perform on stage what groups were doing in the studio. I never had seen a live show in my life. I remember going to my first gig (Roxy, the Hague '79) and NOT expecting a sound as on Viva! Also then for me it was clear that things were 'ameliorated'. But it was my FIRST live record. And it was Roxy! And there is just that period in life -generally between 14 and 18 years of age- that you get into things you really enjoy and if you're lucky you will never loose those sentiments... I remember not much really from that period, but I do remember vividly having this double sleeve album in my hands and wishing that I would still be able to enjoy that music as much as I was then, when I would be 'old'... Untill now i was lucky and i succeeded. I've reached 42 now, and I'm thinking of remaking a "Viva 2!". (Still baffled with what you can do with music on PC and CD-writer...) Lost the paper on which I scrabbled some ideas for now, must be somewhere. Perhaps you can give me some suggestions? A few by heart... 1. OOTB - Funky Chick 2. Pyj - BBC march 5 '73 3. Bogus - Glasgow BF '88 4. CM - must be one of those BBC-recordings (CM itself) 5. BEB - forgot 6. ITIS - Original Members 7. IEDAH - forgot 8. Strand - one of 2001 Bonus tracks?!
