I had a go at LOVE WAR (supposing that it's not around yet) from Alphaville I'm sure it's not right in several places, but hope that Deagler or anyone else will correct and complete this version: Love war (3x) Let's do or die in the neighbourhood can't you feel there's a fever rising I'd kill it if I could Need a spare .... to think about it just a chance to dream hoo hoo on the telephone line makes you wanna scream love war (3x) It 's sweet inside like a bitter pill get a taste for the ......... .............still oh oh down the love line don't know where to turn hoo hoo on the telephone line you can never learn love war (3x) like flowers in the rain [etc. from Fool for Love/Frantic] When I lose you refuse or accuse you but I don't know why I can feel a fever rising burning up the sky Oh the pride and the pain and the fighting will it never end? hoo hoo on the telephone line there she goes again Love war (3x) Thanks in advance for any amendments! The words or phases that I'm not too sure about are between question marks. I've included some footnotes, I hope they help illuminate why I may prefer some words over others. in a disco tech at dawn it's when it came to me I've been Raving through the night (1) lookin' for some company it was the Mambo talkin' it's got a lot to say do you come here often do ya wanna play we'll hitchhike into Paris we'll zigzag by the Seine a Hollywood moment I'll never be the same you can dance there's a world awaiting way beyond the scene how I love to travel baby will you come with me - you can dance jump on the table slide down the pole you can wear your sable you can bare your soul ?fun we go? or ?Flamenco? down to Vegas the casinos never close to movers and the shakers the Tango never knows you can dance to the Motor City (2) that's where I get my shoes? shoot? (3) I need some inspiration (4) I got a lot of time to lose - you can dance from Brady Square (5) ?pumped some gasoline? (6) then dolce vita (7) I find my beauty queen (8) the needle? desert moment (9) a nation never close the music and emotion they'll make you wanna move you can dance take ya to the river try singin' in the rain - we can dance I like a jungle fever got me in the mood again - you can dance oh tutti-frutti gum ball Hollywood - you can dance and then Campari soda a Can-Can if I could - you can dance ?kamikaze? (10) ?chez mister chow? - you can dance hula coola in the here and now - you can dance Rumba Rumba in the Taj Mahal - you can dance ?jingle genome? or ?Jiang Qing? (11) in ?the garden mao? or ?Zedong Mao? - you can dance (12) you can dance you can dance (you can dance repeated many times) - --------- Footnotes: (1) Raving = 'a dance', different dances are mentioned throughout the song. (2) Detroit, Michigan perhaps but I think this is a reference to Birmingham, England. (3) Shoot = a drug fix, or maybe BF does buy shoes in Birmingham! (4) The drug 'inspires' him. (5) Where BF's Father worked tending the mine's ponies. (6) This line is anyone's guess! (7) I believe this may be a reference to Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" 1960 film. Ferry may identify with lead male character. (8) The Film's leading actress = Anita Ekberg. I think the Birmingham link is supported by its Museum that houses pre-Raphaelite art depicting 'the good life' and beautiful women. Also, Birmingham, I gather, is becoming very respectable in terms of 'night-life' and 'culture or high life'. But then, Motor City could be Detroit, and 'Motown' good-life could very well yield up beauty's of some types including 'black beauty's and other drugs. (9) If this word is 'needle' = drug reference. (10) An alcoholic drink. (11) Jiang Qing was Mao Zedong's wife. Or, 'jingle genome' maybe a euphemism for sex?! (12) Don't know of a 'garden mao' and don't know why BF would use reverse Mao's names. So who knows? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 2003 06:32:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Johnny Reece Subject: Re: [AVALON] You Can Dance (YCD) - --- KB Porter wrote: > I found the more I dug into the lyric the more > complex it > all was becoming. > > > > ?fun we go? or ?Flamenco? down to Vegas>> - ---------------------------------- Pretty sure this is definitely 'From Reno down to Vegas' - -------------------------- > > from Brady Square (5) > ?pumped some gasoline? So, fairly polarised views then... Another highlight was 'pretentious s***e'. But the NME and the music feature writers like them. Sadly for me their general kookiness (they wear uniforms and camoflage and bring stuffed birds on stage) cannot disguise a somewhat thin roster of material. The stuff I've heard has sounded pretty much the same - Clem Burke style drums with New Order-y bass, and a church organ/jangly guitar combo sound. I thought it sounds a bit like the 'A Forest' period Cure at times. Regrettably the 'singer' doesn't really have the wherewithal to carry that description - v. wheezy and tuneless. Best track: Fear of Drowning. Sounds a bit like Pyjamarama in places. Might be interesting to see a new band in their embryonic stages, but I'm not sure how they'll go down with the Oh Yeah crowd. They'll probably get bottled. Sanatogen of course... The premise of the series is that original members of a band and other notables discuss their finest moments on a track-by-track basis in a 45 minute long show. Guitarist Steve Jones was asked why Chris Thomas (former Roxy producer) was asked to produce it. Jones: "I was a Roxy Music fan, he produced their albums. That was good enough..." Later in the programme Jones, tongue heavily in cheek, said "I never played on the album, in fact I didn't even know which studio it was recorded in. Chris Spedding played all the guitars, in fact for the live shows, he was behind a curtain playing...so thanks for that Chris" (with a wink and a grin) Thomas then explained the truth about how Jones had played all of the guitars (and indeed bass, as Matlock had been sacked and Sid Vicious couldn't play a note) "I still read articles saying 'session guitarist for the Sex Pistols, Chris Spedding' it's amazing' said Thomas. I'm sure you can trust Thomas, although if those habitual fibbers Maclaren or Lydon had said it I might not have been so easily persuaded. I'm hopeful that there might be a Roxy show in this very entertaining occasional series. A programme on FYP would be cool, although I expect Avalon would be the money men's safe choice. Here's why I'm hopeful: Not only is the series made by a division of Eagle Rock Entertainment, who recently released the Live Roxy Music album, but Eagle Vision's director of European acqisitions is none other than John Gaydon, who as Roxy nerds like me will know, is the G in EG, Roxy's original Management back in 1972 (the E being David Enthoven). Small world, huh? I remember as a bit of a laugh back in 1992 I think, going to see Duran Duran at Radio City Music Hall in New York. They were being backed up by James . Now I had not heard much of James as I had been outside the UK for several years by then except for one memorable occasion when I flew to Rotterdam from Tokyo to watch Man Utd beat Barcelona and pre-match the entire Man Utd crowd were singing " Sit Down" but James were unheard of in NY but great live and I was one of the few who bothered to stay away from the bar to watch them before the main act.
