The DVD of the last Roxy tour is really good, I think I play better live than in the studio. I like the stuff I played on Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting, especially "I Don't Need a Hero" where I played mostly bongos." Agreed! Thanks Collette ! The far is $8.50. A schedule for the Long Island Rail Road and New York City public transportation may be found at http://www.lirr.org/. A one day, unlimited ride MetroCard pass on the NYC local bus and subway system can be bought for $7 from vending machines at every station. Also, when I visited Manhattan last year I used two maps a lot -- a $6.95 laminated folding Rand McNally EasyFinder map of NYC (www.randmcnally.com), and a $2.95 Hagstrom map of the NYC subway system (www.hagstrommap.com). I bought them a few weeks before my trip in a local map store, or you can order them from the respective websites. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 11:14:48 EDT From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Bryan's support I see the Dandy Warhols, who are supporting Roxy in Hyde Park are tipped to support David Bowie and the reformed Duran Duran (that'll be good) later in the year. I think after seeing the way the band was going with Flesh and Blood, Paul decided "enough was enough" That's another reason I admire the guy. He could have made allot of Money with Flesh and Blood But Paul saw it for what it was. I like Newmark as a session Drummer, he has one hell of a portfolio, but he could never have the stage presence of Paul. not allot of drummers do. Regards. Long...... I spent the whole weekend in Langesund with my daughter Unni. She is more at the "right" age of going to rock concerts than I am, but I'm the only real Roxygal in the family. Primarily she is my escorte, but she likes Bryan.. and maybe more now..after this! These three days has been so wonderful!!! Feeling fine,.. beautiful weather, dark blue sea, sea air, seagulls, lots of boats, idyllic small white houses, some of them from 1700 very well preserved, like Wrightegaarden, where the concert took place. Seemed a bit strange to think that Bryan Ferry should come to perform in such a small place like this, but it was perfect! He likes places by the sea, and the bright light reminds him of Newcastle. It was nice seing him in daylight. There were about 1200 people in the garden. The only chair was the wheelchair of Glenn Svendsen, the only present Avalonian I knew. Even one of Norway's riches men, Kjell Inge Roekke was standing there. I have to say I was pleased to see that Bryan has a lot more fans in Norway than I have imagined. I shaked, rattled and rolled even before the show started. So much that I got my picture in the local newspaper! I had promised myself to enjoy life without any restrictions this night, thinking of that last time in September when I was in my hospital bed in stead of sitting in the front row, and this could be my last chance to freak out. (I've been used to go in and out of hospitals. I have got Cronical Pancreatitis.) I'm sure people around me thought it to be very patetic to see this old lady going absolutely crazy, because I can't tell how many sweet young ladies who pat my shoulder wanting to tell me how wonderful I was! Very funny! But I gave a damn, this concert was mine! And I thought it to be my duty to fire up Bryan right from the start! Well he was a little reserved in the beginning, but the last hour he was really enjoying himself, 'dancing' around the whole stage. After the last song no one wanted to leave and shouted "We want more! We want more!" How naive! The sound was jarring in the front, most of the time, sometimes you couldn't hear your own voice, but all the same I sang all the songs . I had very good contact with Mr.Good especially, he smiled and laught and waved to me, and so did Michelle John-Douglas. Just to follow her traditions Unni went to get the setlist that Bryan steps on during a concert, even more dirty than the one from Oslo Konserthus. ..And John, he didn't sing Carrickfergus here, and Virginia Plain followed Tara, no Limbo. The list you've got for Norway was the Swedish one. After the concert I knew where to go! Langesund has only one luxury hotel! We didn't have to wait long before Bryan joined us! Unni and I had Bryan by ourselves for a good long time! We were prepared. I had a bag full of "things". Unni got "For Unni, love Bryan Ferry" on the most colorful photo she took of him in September, which is at vivaroxymusic. I guess some of you will remember that I bought that famous first so-called 'test pressing' of Frantic that turned up at eBay for a very high amount? Now I have Bryan's signature and fingerprints on the CD itself pluss I found out later that he had been writing on the backside of the white cover too! And I told Bryan that I had bought the Master Acetate of Jealous Guy with his handwriting on the label on eBay. "Where?", he asked. "eBay, the auction" I explained. "Oh Yeees," he said, but I'm not sure he knew what eBay is. I told him that I have wanted for a long time to ask him if he will have it back, and that I felt I didn't have the right to have it on my wall, because it belonged to him. Unni said I bought it for him, and that I am his greatest fan - "and the oldest!" I added. He smiled. When I showed him the Master, he said "Oh!.. Yeah!" Then he saw Colin, and shouted: "Colin, look! The Master Acetate of Jealous Guy!".. He signed it, and I asked once again if he was sure he wouldn't have it. He said "No, this is yours, YOU shall have it!", with his "I Thought"- voice. I can't believe it, the Master of all studio-JealousGuys is mine... with Bryan's blessings! I also pointed out that the beige Roxy t-shirt I was wearing was bought in Copenhagen! "Oh yes", he said, and I wonder if he remembered the the very passionated eldery lady he met there! Unni remembered to use her camera this time, and took a picture, but I was looking down at 'my record', so Bryan put his arm around me, held me so tight that I got some of his hair in my eye, inside the glasses, and we had a new picture taken! I even said: "Let's have a great, big smile now!", but on the photo he's only smiling with his eyes.. I can't have it all, can I? ;-) When it felt natural for him to leave, he gave me his hand.. (he is still wearing his wedding ring, if he hasn't changed the name in it, I don't know). When he went to Unni to say goodbye, Unni leaned a little forward, so he gave her a hug. I couldn't believe what I saw, but the tone between us had been so friendly, warm and relaxed and he was so unbelievely sweet and charming, that it all came so naturally. Then he came back to me and I had his warm cheek to mine, long enought to concentrate on how it felt, so I can always remember how it is to be hugged by Bryan Ferry!!!!! As he was turning around to get to the lift, I said it was a great concert! "Yes, it was", he answered and I was watching him enter the lift. He looked at me, smiled and waved. I think I waved long after his shoes disappeared out of sight! Then I fell down in a sofa, ready to faint, but after a couple of minutes Paul Thompson came by! I rushed right up to him, and asked if I could have his autograph! "Sorry, but I don't understand", Paul said, and I realized I had been talking Norwegian! "I'm sorry too, Paul", I said, "but I'm so confused, "I've just got a hug from Bryan!" Paul looked at me, and he looked even more confused of course! Crazy women! Still he had the patience of a saint as he waited for me to find something in my big bag that he could sign for me. I had brought a home-made DVD of Roxy in Stockholm 1976, so I put it on the table, but come to think that maybe he would want to have it and he said "gee, can I have it! Thanks a lot!" I 'let him' graciously sign the Frantic demo cover beside Bryan's ;-) And now I also have a wonderful photo together with Paul Thompson!
