I do like a good drum solo. - ------------------------------------------------------- This is exactly what makes Paul Thompson so special. I remember the Manifesto tour "Not everyone's favourite" Paul played out off his skin He was truly remarkable and I still consider him one of the best drummers I have seen. Regards. Mark - -------------------------------------------------------- Personaly, as a drummer, I would also rank Paul Thomson among my favourite - a very welcome reunion with Roxy really as a few months before I bought a second hand copy of The High Road (a very very cheesy concert - band appears to be going through the motions like a holiday camp act) video and I cant for the life of me remember who the drummer was but he played like a complete and utter wimp - with no meat behind those drum parts a lot of Roxy songs really lose thier edge (particularly Out Of The Blue and Love Is The Drug loses ALL its power)... I was reading on his site he is a huge John Bonham fan and this is painfully apparent - check, again OOTB or Both Ends on Viva or better yet the close of Sea Breezes on the first LP - sounds like hes beating the kit to a pulp! Only person I can think of other than that since Bonham to play so hard is Lars Ulrich (some comparison but I bet you Paul Thompsons snare wishes it had never showed up by the time hes done LOL)! He definitley sits beside Stewart Copeland (my fave drummer) and the afformentioned Large Oilrig as one of the best there is - hands down! Chris Clare PS As for solos - a total waste of time with the exception of Tommy Lee for obvious reasons (yes, when hes beating a drum kit as opposed to some poor unfortunate woman/photographer/etc hes actually a superb entertainer!) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 05:45:32 -0400 From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] A rocking good weekend in Paris I have two tickets for the Rolling Stones at Bercy in Paris, France which I can't use. The gig is on July 7, a Monday, so anyone wanting a long weekend in Paris could travel there on the Saturday, have a nice couple of days and then on the Monday a great concert in an indoor arena. In relation to recent correspondence, guess what? These are standing tickets! But that is NOT why I can't use them!!! The tickets cost me #200 for two 'mid-price' tickets and that is all I am trying to get back for them. Anyone interested - please e-mail me. Best wishes Richard Mills ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 11:58:12 +0100 From: "Colette Robertson" Subject: [AVALON] Paul Thompson - Rhythm Magazine - June 2003 UP FRONT WE TALK TO THE DRUMMERS BEHIND SOME OF THE GREATEST MUSIC EVER RECORDED.................... THE TRACK: "LOVE IS THE DRUG" (Siren opener, 1975) THE ARTIST: ROXY MUSIC THE DRUMMER: PAUL THOMPSON WHERE WAS THE TRACK RECORDED? SET THE SCENE FOR US.......... "It was recorded at Air Studios in the summer of 1975 as part of the Roxy Music Siren sessions. Steve Nye was the engineer and Ross Cullum and Mike Sellers (Peter Sellers ' son) were assistant engineers, the producer was Chris Thomas, John Gustafson was on bass. Air Studios was the studio at the time." WHAT WERE YOUR IMPRESSIONS ON HEARING THE TRACK FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THEN ON HEARING THE FINISHED VERSION? "IT'S A HIT!" HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE TRACK? WHAT MADE YOU PLAY THE PART YOU DID? "We rehearsed it a few days before. Any Mackay brought in an idea, it was just chords at the time and we fell into it naturally. Bryan Ferry added the lyrics and title a little bit later. It was Chris Thomas who suggested taking the snare off and the timbale-type fills were added later." WHAT SET-UP WERE YOU USING? "This is a hard one! I would guess it was a Rogers kit: 24" bass drum, 14" and 18" toms with a Ludwig 402 snare, Zildjian and Paiste cymbals. Or it may have been a Premier Kit with resonator shells? I used Rogers Swivomatic BD pedals in those days." WHICH RECORDINGS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? "Not this one! I feel the tempo is a bit erratic, although I do like the song. On Roxy albums, The Bogus Man, 2HB, Amazona. On Bryan Ferry solo stuff: Let's Stick Together and Price of Love. The DVD of the last Roxy tour is really good, I think I play better live than in the studio. I like the stuff I played on Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting, especially "I Don't Need a Hero" where I played mostly bongos." She thought for a while, 'No Daddy, that's not Roxy Music, it's beautiful piano music' !! I will be traveling from Ohio to NYC to see the Radio City show (third row) and do some exploration of the Big Apple (never been). I saw that Jones Beach tickets are available for Friday. We are arriving Friday morning. Question is, we are staying in mid-Manhattan at Plaza Fifty for the Radio City show - what is the cheapest and/or best way to and from the 30+ miles to Jones Beach, especially after a late show on Friday night.... Thanks for any input from anyone in the NYC area....thanks ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 22:25:43 +0200 From: "Carien Overdijk" Subject: [AVALON] Puzzling lyrics Thanks mishearers, your renderings were very hilarious (especially the string bean) and reassuring. If even native speakers sometimes cannot hear what Ferry is crooning, it's not my fault that it took me (Dutchie) ages to dig the deeper meaning of Stranded. At seventeen I bought it on freshly pressed vinyl. I soon found it very special and have loved it most of all BF's work ever since. But what was it all about? While Ferry is very articulate in many songs, the elongated, highfaluting sentences on Stranded are produced rhythmically and ignoring all interpunction or spacing between words. What puzzled me most was Serenade. Placed right after Psalm, I took it for another religion-oriented song, with its strong opening statement: God is false! Exactly the stuff I needed to hear at seventeen. The ensuing '....but your window pains', I interpreted as wholly figurative, with window meaning 'frame of mind' or something like that. And hurt it did, having lost my own God only a year before! 'A light still burns, but just a smoke-dream flame', was a perfectly plausible and metaphorical follow-up, as were the next few lines. Then 'Sail away, as you draw the shade' seemed a pretty tough assignment, but I knew Ferry was deeper than I could follow. With 'Chlo goodnight, you know it's still a mane', horses came into view, but that didn't enlighten much. 'Gee, plankyness sticks by a never glofire' really knocked me over. Plankyness was in no dictionary, so from there I had to leave Ferry entirely to his religious hangups. I still deeply love this serenade, even though it's not directed at a demigod or other supernatural being. There is so much to every Ferry-composition... The wimp you're referring to is Andy Newmark and he also plays on 3-4 songs on Frantic, so Bryan must like him... For those who have been there, you know that the parking lot is kinda off limits for partying-those Nassau County cops are not the friendliest beings.
