Badly drawn boy and Massive Attack are playing at a Swedish festival and I might attend if they give interviews. Massive Attack, for all their mixed reviews in the music press, have gotten great reviews in the Lighting Design press-- articles in two of the major design mags about this tour. No mention or pic of Lucy, though. Who was it who said that Lou Reed has never disappointed them? I have been a fan of Uncle Lou since '77, but he has put out at least one universally despised album: Metal Machine Music. He claims even he hasn't listened to the whole thing. (And I really hated the Raven, btw.) As for what I have been listening to at the moment, it is a very nice season musically. The Old Kit Bag, Richard Thompson's new disk, is fabulous, and he has released two semi-official bootlegs--one of which is a recording of his highly popular "1000 Years of Popular Music" show (featuring both "Sumer is Icumen Inn," and "Oops! I did it Again,"!) Salif Keita's new album, Moffou, is a rare acoustic set that is just stunning. Orchestra Baobab's new one, "Specialist in All Styles," while not as good as "Pirate's Choice," is great fun. And my new sweetie gave me "69 Love Songs" by the Magnetic Fields for valentines day-- I can't get enough of it. A friend described it as "irritating on the first play, catchy on the second, f***ing brilliant on the third!" Highly recommended. Oh, and my Mom just made a tape for me of an album called "Songs of the African Veldt," from about 1952. Highly politically incorrect, but interesting nonetheless: it is the sound of white europeanized swing bands taking on South African harmonies. A failed, but fascinating hybrid. Listen to any of his albums, solo, or with the Velvet Underground, and you might, just might, get the drift. Of course, a lot of people never get it, but then again, it's their loss. I know that quite a few people on this list disagree, but then again, it's personal taste. I think his weakest album was "New Sensations", but it's still miles better than most of the stuff out there. In tied second place there's Roxy Music and Leonard Cohen. Goodie N.P. Reecey tells me the Massive Attack discussion board is alive with the sound of Lucy. I have seen them on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed, this time round however, I thought twice and was then left with no option as all London dates sold out rapidly. I am, however not impressed at all by the new album (which I have to admit I've only played twice) Well, at least it took three albums for me to get fed up, it only took two with Portishead after their sublime debut album. That's why I'm ecstatic at Goldfrapp's complete departure with their second album. Only a couple of atmospheric numbers and the rest all squirty Iggy Nightclubbing and Human League Being Boiled backing tracks. Strikes me Roxy were one of the few bands that didn't cock it up for me until Manifesto. So that's kind of 5 strikes not out. How many other bands have done that for you punters out there? I just know you're all going to come up with Bowie, Beatles, Stones etc. And Ferry would probably pipe up with Dylan (but we all know he's mad!) So come on guys and gals - who's never disappointed you in the album stakes? Jocelyn Well John McLaughlin did have a simliar effect on me one time in the mid 90's at a concert in Chicago. His band at the time ( not Mahavishnu) was venturing off into some very overindulgent territory. Now granted I would kiss the ground he walks on. Him being one of the top three living guitarists in my book ( J. Beck and R. Thompson being the other ones), this particular concert was not jelling for me. I walked out and went home. I have seen him since and have been pleased. This also happened to me with Lou Reed; twice as matter of fact (1979 and 1992). Not sure if I can sit thru another one of his concerts. As for the other artists you speak of ( with the exception of Dylan) it was immediate from the get go for me with the Beatles( with Hendrix closely behind) leading the pack. Can't say that I had never been disappointed by them. As for Roxy, I did not like all of For Your Pleasure in the beginning because of Grey Lagoons, but as time has passed ( and having listening to various boots) it did grow on me. I still say Flesh and Blood was not a complete success given what had preceded it and what followed ( Avalon), but it was still miles ahead of most of what was passing for music at that time.
