Nearly - late December back in '73 actually. I was 14 years old and driving along the embankment one Saturday with my elder brother Bill. I looked over and there was a newspaper hoarding with 'Bobby Darin dies' splish splashed accross the front. As his life ended, mine (musically) was about to begin. Suddenly Street Life came on the radio and I was immediately hooked. I couldn't help, but notice how 'different' it sounded. It may have helped that my brother Bill also professed a liking for the record, but that I'll never know. Until then I had no musical identity of my own. My parents had only recently divorced and I'd only recently been allowed to watch TOTP for the first time. Before then I had to make do with listening to my mother and sister's records and occasional radio when my dad wasn't at home. So I had little idea what most of the pop groups looked like and certanly no idea what Roxy looked like. I had a vague idea who BF was! At the time money was tight in our home, a single parent family in the era of power cuts and the three day week - no wonder glam was so popular. So the story seems quite straightforward from here - I scrape the money together buy Street Life and/or Stranded and the rest is history. Not quite, I also liked the latest Mott The Hoople single and it was a toss up whether I bought Stranded, or the latest Mott album. I took my #2.30p I think it was to the local record shop and looked through the racks. I would have to buy the cassette as I did not have a record player (shame the LP was only #1.99p). I scanned the Roxy offerings and found Street Life on Stranded. If it had not been included (as with the first two albums) I feel certain I would Have been a Mott fan, and would have saved a bob or two as they broke up within a year or so. Well the rest is history - countless RM and solo records, numerous tours, fan club membership and of course AMA2! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V8 #126 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
