I was sort of dozing a few weeks ago when the White Stripes were the craze here in Avalonia. I've just begun reading about them and they sound like exactly what I want to hear right now - blues inspired garage. Perfect. I am so sick of disco. I can't hear enough Leadbelly and Robert Johnson these days. There is another duo band out of Denmark which should be pretty good (though not blues) - the Raveonettes. I haven't heard them but I'm dying to. I guess they are heavy on the synth with short songs. If it's any indication of talent, every release by the White Stripes and Raveonettes have at least 8-person-long wait lists at the Danish Library, with me sitting eagerly at the end of every one. Talent and popularity can be the same, but don't have to be. There is a large number of artists out there that are bound to be far more talented than the above-mentioned, but will never be as popular. Usually some DJ latches onto a band that he likes, gives them loads of airplay, and they become popular, the records sell, etc... Solution: if you want to promote your taste in music, become a popular radio DJ. Goodie N.P. The Raveonettes bring to mind Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, Velvets coving Everly Brothers songs, ... stuff like that. Buzzing twin Fender Jaguars, simplistic chord progressions (supposedly, every song is in Bb (B flat) ), bursts of noise, some very interesting drumming, pre-recorded 'found sound' backdrops, (ON TOPIC: Eno-like sound collages blended with the rhythms...), and the cutest girl bass player since Tina Weymouth. I have seen them twice on this first American tour, and they are back in DC in June, I may go again. I've spoken with the band a bit, they are just happy to be doing it. Did I mention that Sharin is adorable? (even though she plays that dinky Mustang) I think there is much more 'image' than talent in that band, but I will definitely wait and see how they turn out. Hi Jocelyn and all..... Sorry but I haven't had time to read or follow the list recently, but this caught my eye and opened up a 'Whole Can'o'Worms ' for me.I was ambleing along the Charring Cross Rd one evening many years ago on my home from the City when i spotted the Pretenders playing at the Lyceum. It was a spontaneous moment when I was alone, and rather than grab a bag of Fish & Chips and settle for an 'Evening In',I thought screw it,I've never seen them.I liked that venue and though they didn't exactly pack the house, they played a great set and provided me with a memorable night.I can't be sure as my memory is jaded.but I think it was the Belle Stars who opened for them.?Yes, Chrissie and Cher may have passed thier Sell By Date, but probably so have I.!(Why is it that Health Food/Vegetarians always look so unhealthy?) Last summer I dragged my wife along to our local venue, the Garden State Arts Cntr,to see the last remains of Inxs and Simple Minds.I was there to see how Jim Kerr was holding up after all these years.Obviously life is not too bad for him.He looked tremendously fit, agile and gave it 101%.The jocks have always been a Stylish Clan and he is carrying the banner on.He was playing to an unenthusiastic virtually empty Amphitheatre and I'm sure (To the embarrasement of my Wife) Jim and I were the only two men in the place who danced (well sorta') through the whole show. The kids in that place who had come to hear Inxs must have been pissing themselves at the 'Old Fart' dancing in the 30th row!Whatever.............As long as I enjoy it,i'll do it. I wonder if Bryan was looking down at me in the front row cntre spot at the RAH (Thanks again, Andrew)and thinking 'My God,that row used to be filled with Sexy ,beautiful Sirens. What's going on? So ,Chrissie lost to Patsy,Jim lost to Liam.and i'm going Grey......... Can you tell me if Rangers have lost to Celtic recently, as i'm 'outta touch and i just want to know how Jim Kerr keeps so bloody young and happy looking? I must admit that the announcement of a new album and an outtakes cd is good news to me, just a pity that we never get the chance to see him play his own material live, I live in hope. Can the list member who offered to trade a Tim Finn recording featuring Phil mail me off list as I was too busy to pay much attention to the posting when it was originally sent. Can anyone offer their Views on the Random Hold albums? How do they compare to the work Bill did with Phil in 801? Cheers Tom.
