Haddad" Subject: [AVALON] Pretension Re: the subject of potential and pretension, it's true that over time bands lose the rough edges, which I assume is a function of the studio process. I don't pretend to know much about it, but it seems that the techniques used to "pretty up" a recording rub off on bands over time, until they come to embrace the refined aesthetic. Roxy Music is a prime example of that! By contrast, many of you must know local "bar bands," unsigned acts who have been around for ages, who still have great, edgy energy. Or is that amateurism, which will fade with time or just settle into cozy mediocrity? I suppose that's why most band break up if they aren't signed within a few years. And as for pretension, I think everyone here agrees that it's a beautiful thing. I have known some ignorant people who don't realize that "pretension" is defined as "an aspiration or intention that may or may not reach fulfillment" and "pretentious" means "making demands on one's skill, ability, or means." The positive definitions of those words are everything Roxy Music stands for! Reaching for that indefinable something; putting yourself out there (maybe to succeed, maybe to fail); trying to be the best you possibly can. It's a combination of hope and belief in onself. Heck, yeah, I want that in my rock stars. I want that in EVERYBODY I KNOW! Just thought I'd pass this on to those who enjoyed early Elton John. If you liked the early stuff with the Paul Buckmaster strings and the lazy country flavorings go and check out Beck's latest CD, Sea Change. Standout tracks are "The Golden Age" and "Paper Tiger". When you first hear them them, you just soak into the groove.... That's all...(everytime I type that I think of poor Phil Collins artistic crash!) I'm not a huge fan of off-topic talk taking over the list, and I think I've been pretty lenient these last few weeks. Folks being rude and disagreeing about Roxy/Ferry is one thing; that type of behavior over off-topic stuff must stop, please. I would very much prefer, for that reason, that the list get back on track, please. I'm sorry I've been so busy with my new job that I can't contribute as much as I would like to to on-topic conversation--and I will try to add my comments to the Frantic-revisted thread--instead of merely sending this note. Thank you for your consideration of this request Colleen ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 16:41:10 EDT From: LottieStreeter2@cs.com Subject: [AVALON] 'lil humor on the Cher thread.... However, I actually prefer to listen to old and new stuff. But, if I gotta listen to Phil's latest pathetic album to "grow old gracefully", then somebody put a BULLET in my head. It's just an embarrassing album. Yes, he was great at one time until he tried his hand at "pop" music. And the reason "the list" is mentioning these other artists/bands is because they are generally good bands with actually something different and unique to offer (plus they did there homework, just read some of there interviews). Ok, anyone wanna dump some gasoline on this one? End of transmission... Someone (maybe Jas?) mentioned a while back that Cher was an institution, well I do believe she should be in an institution. But I was far more concerned for our communal cerebral well-being regarding this post that anything to do with the White Stripes whom I regard as mainstream punk pop and enjoy them very much on that level and that level alone. As an aside, a very good friend and I recently attended a Pretenders' concert (as a freebie) and astounded ourselves with our hypocritical utterances of "she's far too old to do that coquettish thang" and "I wish she wouldn't do the new unreleased stuff and realise all anyone wants to hear is the hits" If anyone had dared to maintain that at a recent Ferry gig they would have been lynched! But I have to say Chrissie might be an old slapper, but she sure can still belt them out. Stand by Tom, for a Goldfrapp live review in a couple of weeks, which of course won't persuade you to buy Black Cherry, but might just take the opportunity to rub in that Celtic are the team of the season (certainly ain't N'castle or the Baggies!!!) BTW anyone attending Phil's contirbutional gig at the RFH tomorrow?
