Meg only keeps the beat, several times i hoped she might throw in a half note or some syncopated rythem or something (and there was room for it) but she didn't and jack mashes so hard on the strings his guitar sounds badly out of tune during most of their stuff. I didn't just write this to bum you out but they need to work on it before i blow a ton of sunshine up their asses... Ideas great...execution poor. sorry Will ...BTW if you want copies of the conan stuff i have it. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gemini Moon" To: Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 1:50 PM Subject: [AVALON] The White Stripes > They are the most exciting, talented, adorable, fascinating band I have seen > for a long time,Meg is the sweetest, cutest drummer ever,Jack's voice and > guitar playing absolutely delightful,I have their 4 cds, that's how much I > love the White Stripes!GM. > > _________________________________________________________________ > Get Hotmail on your mobile phone http://www.msn.co.uk/mobile > > > ___________________________________________________________________________ > To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 19:55:28 +0100 From: "Heather Buch" Subject: [AVALON] apple site This is interesting from the NY Times: > > Apple Said to Be Entering E-Music Fray With Pay Service > > April 28, 2003 > By MATT RICHTEL > > SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 - Apple Computer plans on Monday to > introduce a digital music service, according to industry > analysts. ..... > > Apple itself has provided few details of its new service, > but people in the music industry and analysts said users > would be charged 99 cents to download individual songs > drawn from the catalogs of the big record labels. But think of what it means for someone like Ferry? If he only had to produce one great song at a time, maybe we would hear more of him, and more good original songs. Also, the music copying cases last week with Streamcast and Grokster winning over the RIAA.....might not be long before we have no more need for record companies. According to some, good music production can be had with an excellent sound card. Artists could record and burn their own cd's, then sell them on their own web sites, advertising through word of mouth. I think that's pretty much the reason for the odd guitar/drums-and-nothing-else lineup and I think it's also the reason that they seem to thrash out their tunes, often to the torment of their intonation and sense of time. They probably think they'd lose their indie cred if they played too well. ;-) - -Rob On Monday, April 28, 2003, at 11:30 AM, Will wrote: > I watched their performances all week on conan and even downloaded > vids of the conan stuff, but despite the fact that i don't mind their > music > I must say that they are poor musicians. I've been "scoring" (and I use the term loosely) my student films myself. I've got mic stands all over the place in this little bedroom I use for a studio and I score these little projects by playing all the instruments myself and then chopping up all the bits I record on the computer and putting them together in my own little mixes. Obviously I try to be fairly together about it all, but my skills on a lot of the instruments that I use are fairly limited. Nevertheless, kids in my classes have offered critique on more than one occasion about how the music in my films seems "too slick." I used some Roland JP-8000 synth pads in the film I'm working on right now and at one of the in-progress screenings someone asked me if I was using Pink Floyd for a temp soundtrack. It turns out that one man's DIY is another man's "corporate rock." As soon as I can stop smashing my head on my desk I may have to reevaluate my stance on intonation and timekeeping. ;-) - -Rob On Monday, April 28, 2003, at 03:07 PM, eRacerX wrote: > Isn't that the truth? He couldn't do much worse, and at least then he could satisfy his core fans and maybe his own adventuristic sense and perhaps even come up with a more commercial surprise. I doubt any of this will pass, when the "know it alls" in the record business probably have him on a pretty short leash, considering his record sales spiral downward with each release...anyways, hope springs eternal...no more party time wasting when you are running out of time.
