They were the special musical guests all week. I had been hearing of them for some time and their latest release has had some critics over here ( and I think in Britain) practically gagging themselves in ecstasy. I had not paid that much attention to the hype until these performances this week. Wow! For just a guitar and drum, they pack a wallop. Brother & Sister? Married? Lovers? Siamese Twins? Basic and stripped down, but intense rock and roll. I was impressed. The song, Seven Nation Army, which I had heard before and not realizing it was them, has been buzzing in my head daily. Just wanted to see if anyone else can weigh in on this. As for the hype, time will tell. There was a big hype around Roxy Music in 1972 ( magazine articles, critical buzz, etc.) before I actually heard them . I was going to dispense them as just another British "art-rock" band too until I heard Editions of You and well......here I am. I need my daily Roxy/Bryan fix along with Jimi, Beatles, and the Stones just to jump start my day. Oh one more thing. Another performance has been buzzing in my head as of late... don't laugh and no flames.... Cher. One of her "farewell" performances has been televised a lot here (VH-1) within the last two weeks. Not bad, not bad at all. Nice presentation, blinding visuals, hot band, and of course the "diva" herself, Cher. In as much as I wanted to dismiss her before, I feel bad that I did not make her shows when she was in Chicago. She's survived and she looks and sounds.. fabulous. Sorry for the temporary diversion. Waiting for the release of the "official" live Roxy shows from 2001. God has it been 2 years ago that they were in Chicago? Sigh....... I did manage to catch Warren Zevon on Letterman back in like October; I thought he was supposed to die within a few weeks, but apparently he's beating the odds for a while longer yet... I've been impressed with what I've heard from White Stripes; they have a cover of the Dolly Parton song "Jolene" that just blows me away almost as much as early Roxy does. > ( Nina Simone.. Rest in Peace) Amen to that, what a remarkable woman she was; apparently planned on being a concert pianist until she fell in with the nightclubbing scene. I have noticed she has covered some of the same artists/tunes that Ferry has, like I Put a Spell on You, Love Me or Leave Me, Dylan, Lennon, more that I'm forgetting. Her own songs are works of art; who can listen to "Four Women" and not be moved deeply? My thoughts exactly ! > > ( Nina Simone.. Rest in Peace)>> I was lucky enough to have seen Nina play at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London in the early 80's, and had a table right by the stage. Probably the most spellbinding concert I have ever attended. Reecey... . . . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. I bought their last album, not the latest, during the burst of publicity they were enjoying then (less than now, but still pretty fulsome in some quarters). Played it about one and a half times, forgot about it. One song I sort of liked. Otherwise ho-hum. Anyone else underwhelmed? Guy PS: Now, as for the Mendoza Line, "Lost In Revelry"... Hubba hubba! I haven't bought any of their albums, what I heard at friends etc was enough, I don't need the Stripes in my record collection. But, try and listen to Yo La Tengo, now they are good. Their new album Summer Sun got a 4 star review in the latest Uncut magazine. Best Band I've seen for years. Are you still having problems with the old ear infection again Johnny? While not the worst thing I've heard in recent years i can't understand how this lot gets so many rave reviews, at best they are a pretty ordinary. Another act that comes under this sort of category are Goldfrap, their performance on TOTP's last night was laughable. Tom. I think it's the third time I see it on there. Only this time I felt a little excited when it was announced. At 11.30 pm I accidently heard that Parkinson would be next 'with the music of Bryan Ferry'...nothing more. I turned to the text programme site and read: Parkingson; Michael meets Bryan Ferry(!) Not that I thought I had been missing something, but Jim might have gone on holiday...and I'm dying to know how Bryan is feeling now! Anyone else? Anyway I'm glad the viewers got to know who was the STAR of the programme!
