Guess it's my turn. Ok , I was 7 years old, and it was 'Ticket To Ride' by The Beatles. It was one of those "hey, my older brother can buy records with his pocket money, so why can't I have more money to get my own too" ? type of situations... Hey, it worked. My Bruv had the heads-up on music then though, being 6 years older, and was the archetypal 'Beatles and Stones' guy. There had to be brotherly rivalry, it's an unwritten law after all, so, some months later, The Troggs became my chosen first real heroes of the day (and I still maintain that 'With A Girl Like You' is the greatest pop single ever made !). Back then too, ex-jukebox Singles were a big thing, usually sold in the local supermarkets, so I'd pick up packs of them once they'd dropped out of the charts, to enhance my collection (most people did). My first album purchase though, wasn't until 1971, when the rather essential 'Electric Warrior' by T.Rex hit the stores. I got it the same day as buying a Fly Records comp called 'Flyback - The Big Ones', mainly because that had some early Tyrannosaurus Rex stuff on it too, which I required (it was like a drug, and all these years later, to an extent, it still is). Several thousand days, several thousand purchases and a lot less hair later, I remember buying those titles as if it were yesterday. Fondest 'buying memory' was in 1966, when I was a distraught (yet strangely troublesome) 8 year old, upset because every store in Glasgow seemed to have sold out of the aforementioned Troggs Single. My Dad decided, to cheer me up, we'd go to the seaside for the day, but didn't reckon on me leaving the beach to go round every shop in Girvan and Irvine hunting for the Troggs 45, which I did. I found the last copy in a little shop in Irvine. I'll never forget it. It ended up as about a 170 mile round trip for me to get that record (hey, that's what Dads are for !) My parents were always really cool about my record buying, and I'm always thankful for that. It's no surprise, I guess, that I eventually ended up with my own Record Shop - it was already in my system, from when I was a lad. A zillion years later, I'm glad to say, some Albums, and some Gigs, are still really exciting, and I'm glad that I've never lost that. Some call it immaturity, I call it having fun (though I admit that maybe it's a bit of both). The Roxy reunion tour was a great excitement (particularly Dublin, first gig) and it was such a thrill in the last couple of weeks, to see amazing gigs by Sparks, then, just last weekend, The mighty White Stripes. Bloomin' marvellous. And, for the record (excuse the pun), I intend to stop buying Records and CDs when I grow up. Might be a while. Reecey... PS Mightily impressed btw, by the 2 people whose first purchases were 'The Creation'. Now, THAT'S cool. The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. It was probably a Mr. Pickwick EP (ep's of cover versions aimed at kids). I've still got one with Tiger Feet, Alright Alright Alright, Give A Little Love and Wombling White Tie & Tails. So, my earliest memory of buying singles is from the newsagent down the road when I was about 4, and of course they were ex-juke box, and I was always very careful not to lose the snap-in centres as I wouldn't be able to stack them on my Dansette! I can definitely remember 1979, buying Bowie's Boys Keep Swinging, Gerry Rafferty's Night Owl, Squeeze's Up The Junction, all of which I still have. I also inherited a lot of records, my first Roxy singles were given to me by my older brother Paul, sleeveless Island singles in a Family Circle biscuit tin! And I still buy 7" singles to this day, old and new (I was browsing the singles box in my local Oxfam just yesterday). For me, 45's are the ultimate expression of rock n roll, containing more power in 7 inches than any other music medium. They had the power to change lives. I used to get excited about a new single in a way that I've never been able to for an album. I can't say the same today because the single is more a token gesture than a statement of intent, but I do cherish my old 45's. Rock on! He wrote a book on 45's, "What Was the First Rock and Roll Record" as well as other books on 50's record collecting, doo-wop and R n B. I'm very proud of him. He inspired my love of music. He has thousands of 45's. The early punk and new wave 45's are *very* collectable. I traded all my vinyl in for CD's a couple of years ago because I'm not a record collector.
