Well, I know at least 4 more people on this list who have been Roxy fans for 30 years...and one of them is me !! My very first Roxy gig was on May 3rd 1973, Rheinhalle D|sseldorf. Before that, I had bought Roxy's first 2 LPs and their singles ..."Virginia Plain" was my favourite and I played it all day long, to the absolute horror of my mum!!! Then I saw Roxy on TV, it was "Musikladen" and they did "Virginia Plain" which I taped on an audio cassette --some years later the TV show was repeated and I could record it on a VHS video tape. Now it was a "must" to go to D|sseldorf and see their concert!! I travelled about 50 km and I had a seat in the 20th row...Actually, I don't remember much of the setlist, but I recognised the songs from my LPs and ....I was (let's put it that way) very, very impressed by this singer called Bryan Ferry !!! After the show, I went to the stage door for the first time in my life and amidst some screaming girls (I was quiet), I got my first BF autograph--a really good one, not just "waves". I was thrilled to bits and...hooked for life!!!! At school, English became my very favourite subject and I started to earn some cash by helping other pupils with their English tests. With that money I paid for my next Roxy gigs... So after this start, I didn't miss a single Roxy/ BF tour and still enjoy the concerts today...It cost me a small fortune, but no regrets at all !!! These are hand cut Edinburgh Crystal wine glasses, engraved with the Roxy Music logo as on the first album, and come in pairs in a presentation box. I have had a few pairs made over the last couple of years as gifts for fellow Avalonians, and they are not available commercially. If anyone is interested in purchasing a pair for themselves, please contact me off-list, and if there are sufficient numbers I will arrange for a batch to be made. This offer will not be repeated in future. The cost is #55 per pair (discounted price), plus #5 postage and packing. I am not making any profit out of this whatsoever. Unfortunately I have to restrict this offer to UK based list members only. Fellow list member Nigel Hollis is the proud owner of a pair of these glasses, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind authenticating the details stated above. I 'found' Ferry after Roxy Music disbanded. So from the perspective of a fan who was acquired post-Roxy, I frequently marvel that the reasons why I like BF with RM, and BF post-RM, are for different reasons! The early Roxy years are extremely unique in several ways, but with regard given only to Ferry's contributions to the band, the most striking is his voice: His forte was the uniqueness of his voice combined with how he used it. It was more an instrument he used to create or convey moods and images via tonal infliction and varied tempo. When I consider that he was largely self-taught in the field of music, he must have heavily relied upon his innate ability to "sing" on-the-fly with very little technical or classically obtained know-how. His brilliance was maximizing the use of his voice (perhaps even to the extent of laryngeal abuse) as an instrument. Of course, lyrics have always been crucial to his success, however, it seems to me that BF post-RM relied much more upon non-vocal instruments to create and convey modes. His voice evolved into a softer and less obvious variable. The 'score' became more prominent with multi-layered parts that created the 'lush soundscapes' we sometimes refer to, but still Ferry's more subtle voice carries the day. Although most have decided their preferences in terms of the different periods of BF's artistic growth, I find it remarkable that he has retained ability and acquired expertise in his field of endeavor. - I simply love listening to RM with BF and BF post-RM for different, all be they equally credible, reasons which I superficially mentioned. I think it is interesting to read how our long(er)-term fans found RM/BF, especially when in their teens. It's great adventure saving paper route money, allowances, tutorial earnings to buy RM records and concert tickets. - Guess it doesn't take much to amuse me. ;) Thanks, all! Best wishes.
