Happy Anni for yesterday, Reecey. Great memories. I first saw Roxy at Lincoln in 72. One of those 'school weekends' when you're at a friend's house and they're at yours! Shh - my parents still don't know where I was. We went to see Rod Stewart and the Faces and I came back a Roxy fan. I couldn't remember the exact date, but courtesy of Roxyrama have been able to check it - May 27th - and where IS Chris Turner? My memory's not as good as yours, but I have been a fan ever since. I really regret not hanging on to all my tickets from years ago, they were thrown out when I emigrated to Canada. For Marlana - I think there are quite a few of us 'oldies' around - but many just lurking on the fringe. At the latest Manchester gig I ran into someone I hadn't seen since 1982 and she too has been to every tour since - we just hadn't connected. Oh and whilst I'm here - hello to Dr Who - I know you're lurking, Nigel.. Just like to say it's been great to meet everyone over the last couple of years, having kept to myself before. Looking forward to the next tour to meet one or two more of you. Excellent! Superb, Johnny!!! It is a funny old world. And it is also a great one - posts such as yours are a true delight to read. Wish I'd been there with you back then! Please, tell us, as Marlana has requested, what drew you to this first concert? Also, do I recall correctly that Jocelyn is at least as longtime fan of RM as you are? - Her Father, a newspaper music critic with spare tickets? Such luck! Great reminiscence - slink back more often. Please. Best wishes. KBP - -------- Original Message -------- - --- KB Porter wrote: > > > Please, tell us, as Marlana has requested, what drew > you to this first concert? > Well, 'Pyjamarama', then FYP, drew me there. I was already familiar with both Virginia Plain, and the First Album, and though I liked them, they didn't 'catch' me at that point - I was too much of a T.Rex fan then to let any other Band get in the way ! But a Saturday morning, around late February 1973 changed that. It's difficult to explain. Listening to a DJ called 'Stuart Henry' doing his Saturday morning show on the radio, who announced that after the 10.30am news bulletin, he'd play the new single from Roxy Music, 'Pyjamarama'. I remember thinking, what a strange, strange title for a record, first of all. I have no idea why those exact details are still burned into my brain, but they most definitely are. 'Pyjamarama' began. And I was hooked. It was the intro, firstly, I'd never heard anything quite like that before. And I loved the first line, hinting at any number of things to follow... "Couldn't sleep a wink last night"... and that was that. I remember every detail in glorious colour. I marched down to my local record store there and then, and got the Single, which, I believe, had only been released the previous day. I had to. I was hooked. I played it so much, again and again, that I'm surprised it didn't burn through to the other side. Then, afterwards, of course, there was the 'For Your Pleasure' Album.. I'd never quite seen an Album Cover like that before, it was classy, cool, but with an underlying touch of sleaze, and something 'dark' about it all, though the gatefold inside pic was totally different to the outer sleeve, yet magnificent (and still one of my fave Roxy pics, even now). The Album took me by surprise, particularly as it didn't even contain the single - a real rarity for that to happen in those days. And the look of the Band themselves ! And, what an Album. I scoured the music papers for news of a possible tour, to find that Roxy Music were indeed playing in Glasgow to support the Album, counted up my pocket money, and rushed off with a mate to get tickets for the gig (which, at that point, was nearly sold out, hence my 'seat in the gods'). I think you know the rest... > Also, do I recall correctly that Jocelyn is at least > as longtime fan of RM as you are? >> Even moreso, as Roxy didn't play Scotland at all on their first UK Tour in 1972, so those lucky souls based in England got to see them first. I think I made up for it later though (!), particularly, gig wise, mainly from the tail-end of the FYP tour, and a great deal of the Stranded Tour onwards, as so many of us based in the UK have. Funny thing is, after joining the fanclub, I received the excellent 'newsletters' several times a year, (some of which I still have tucked away somewhere)which came out to all club members, and remember reading the reviews of various gigs that I couldn't attend, written by fans from all around the country. One of those fans who had the odd review or 2 posted in those mags, I'm sure, was Jocelyn, and we (and a bunch of the rest of us, probably !) didn't actually meet up in person until 20 odd years later, on the 'As Time Goes By' Tour in 1999. Strange but true. Funny ol' world, indeed. Reecey... Yahoo! Subject: [AVALON] Re: 30 yr.Anniv. seeing Roxy Good to see some of people's take on when they first saw a gig of Roxy. Richard M. was about the same time as Reecey. Makes me feel like a babe in the woods. Thats okay at least I heard Ferry & Roxy to become intoxicated with Ferry's lyric's. I never saw the man until the Live-Aid broadcast on TV.I just thought he was so cool. A friend had brought over cassettes for me to hear. He was so afraid of someone ripping off his original stuff that we could only hear what he recorded. Talk about a hit at a party. I had to get my hands on everything I could find. I even searched the 2nd hand stores looking for Ferry-Roxy. Found quite a few but asked "why would anyone want to get rid of them.? Was lucky for me, then I had to get the Videos. Once hooked you're not satisfied until you do have it all. Then you have to attend the concerts, everyone knows how it is. Just die-hard fans.
