This most important anniversary only happens once a year (most anniveraries do, ain't that amazing ?) so I think I should be allowed to creep onlist, bang on about it, and slink away back to my reminiscences. Bear with me. April 6th, 1973. Green's Playhouse, Glasgow (later to become the Glasgow Apollo, much later to become a pile of rubble, and much, much later, to become offices, probably...), what a damn shame. The mere sum of 60p bought a varied evening of entertainment. I was in the gods, 'rear balcony' I think they call it. Seat CC42, don't ya know. Lloyd Watson started proceedings, just him with his guitar shattering the evening air, and a mate of Manzo's I believe. Sharks were up next, the highly entertaining 'Snips' on lead vocals. And who is that on guitar ? Why, a young lad called... Chris Spedding. Funny how things work out, eh ? The lights went down, and 'The Pride And The Pain' blasted through, as the Band took the stage. Roxy began with 'Do The Strand'. And here's something quite strange about it all, there was no 'front man'. Ferry one side on keyboards, and Eno on the other, until about halfway through the gig. We all know now, many years later, how things changed, tensions grew, and Ferry became 'the boss', and the front man of the Band. Little did I know back then, that my favourite member of Roxy at that time (dressed for the occasion in THAT peacock jacket) would have flown the nest within just 3 months. I've probably forgotten more than I can remember, if you know what I mean, but the memory of the 'event' stays with me to this day, so much so that the date of April 6th is imprinted, fully. I remember 'Beauty Queen' being played early on. It was 'Ladytron' which segued effortlessly into 'Dream Home', and on the latter track, it was Ferry's first venture of the evening, to stage front. A highlight was, naturally, 'Editions Of You', where I witnessed 'the duckwalk' for the first time, courtesy of the man I always refer to as 'Mr Roxy', of course, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Andy Mackay. I was to see many, many more in the years to follow. The encore was slightly different to a few of the other gigs on the For Your Pleasure tour. I remember it being 'Pyjamarama', with 'Grey Lagoons' to finish, Ferry having discarded his jacket, Eno having changed into a glam silver number, and belting out the backing vox stage front along with Andy Mackay. It was magnificent. In the foyer afterwards I bought the FYP tour poster, similar to the inside of the sleeve, though with the Band in an 'arc' shape along the length of it. Many years later, the poster was lost, but I vowed to get one back, oh, one day, no matter how many years it would take... I achieved that just 2 years ago, and a framed perfect copy now hangs in my lounge. Today is the day I give it an appreciative nod. Things weren't going to be the same after that night. I'm not sure how many different 'paper rounds' I ended up doing before school in the latter part of 1973, but they were for one purpose only - to finance my ticket buying and travelling for the following tour (for Stranded) the following autumn. 30 years on, hey, not much has changed. Though, if someone had said to me on that Spring night in 1973, that Roxy Music would be on tour 28 years later, I'd have thought they were quite mad. If they'd also said Roxy would have the young guitarist in tow from the support Band I'd just seen, I'd have thought they were madder still. And... if they'd said I'd travel round various countries to attend 19 of those concerts in the year 2001, I'd have them locked up. Funny ol' world, eh ? Reecey... Yahoo! I remember Phil Manzanera telling me in Copenhagen 20021 that the management forced Mr Ferry up front. No band without a front man had ever made it. "Little did we know what monster we created", Mr Manzanera said without a straight face. Looking forward to meeting Mr Reece et al in Stockholm. Would it be mad to say you will see Roxy in 28 years after the Hammersmith show in the year 2029, and at the rate of inflation from you first Roxy gig to your last one it will be 4166 Pounds for a ticket come then. Don't ask me to come to that gig, I will be washing my hair.
