The seventies vis a vis Roxy Music. To me, their sound and image is not about the 30s or 40s. Rather it is all about the 70s, the last era which I consider people to have been interested in the decade they were living in, and not some other decade, and the last era which I consider glamour to have existed without self-consciousness. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- Actually as a 24yr old Roxy fan Id agree - I think if you look into the early albums if you wanted to cite an influence you could find pretty much anything in there if you wanted but then there's the appeal IMHO - "all styles served here" really. In terms of being explicitly 70s theres a freedom not many bands have nowadays image wise but in the 70s especially in Roxys beginning was abundent (David Bowie, Kiss, NY Dolls, Alice Cooper and Queen) and the glamour was exploited every which way and I think a lrge amount of reason for its success wasthe advent of colour TV in the late 60s - where before it wouldnt have mattered all of a sudden here were groups with so much colour and visual exubrence! Plus the advantage for Roxy (and early Alice/Queen) was the music was diverse quirky and fresh (normally Zappa would be the nearest port of call to experience such a broad base in 45 minutes). As time has gone on people have specialised in elements of these bands but noone has made a sort of "all in one package" like those bands did - entertainment, rock and roll and a hint of flash all in one hit! Now the element is on extreme - 80s rock took glam to its androgynous conclusion, new romantic took the flamboyance to embarrasing heights, dance music takes the anthemic elements and the beat that wont quit and drives them to the point of annoyance - The reason the music holds well is its varience and the reason I think Roxy are probably the ones its easy to look upon without so much as a wince is beacause they knew when to quit wheras the others quality of output is up and down like a kangaroo in mating season. ==================================================== 2. Roxy Music and nostalgia (why RM makes people think of the 30s or 40s or 70s or some other time) - ----------------------------------------------------- Roxy music draws its influences and produces a jumble of styles in each album (sometimes in a song alone) - it recalls so many eras and genres yet sounds fresh due to the hybrids involved - look at it the other way - now people listen to record and are reminded of Roxy Music! ==================================================== 3. The seventies glamour lifestyle (Helmut Newton, euro-disco, fancy hotels, models, europe) and how this converged with punk and other movements which questioned glamour but then became what they questioned via MTV, fashion, etc. - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Punk didnt question glamour - at its most basic level look at its origins as its known - it all began in a clothing boutique! And of course the band that came from that boutique - the Sex Pistols confirm in The Filth And The Fury that early 70s glam was thier influence - Steve Jones cites Roxy Music as an influence in terms of the noisyness (and rightly so) and John Lydons influence was to sing Alice Coopers "Im 18" - the further irony being the style they played was like degenerated 50s rock n roll with snotty lyrics.... what were we discussing earlier about Roxy and 1950s influence?! ===================================================== 4. The idea of glamour and materialism in Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry's images and sound. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------- Paints a utopic picture in the mind of something greater than how we (the average guy) lives while being easy to relate to in its themes. A bit like borrowing a suit for a job interview when you know very well youll be working in a pair of jeans - its not really you but it feels nice for a while.... I like my rock stars larger than me - they wouldnt be stars otherwise! And think of it this way - if the glamour and materialism is bad then what does that make Marilyn Manson? =================================================== Christopher Clare : BT Onebill : Base Telephony ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 06:58:49 EST From: Alanandalyj@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Re fav videos Roxy Music-Avalon,Alittle dated but very stylish. I love hearing anyones stories about Roxy Music in the 70s and 80s. Heather Buch > > That's a great twist on things Heather. Very close to what I believe was happening in the 70's. We had just emerged from the psychedelia of the 60's and the London/American scenes of fashion and freedom. I was just that little bit too young to really latch on, (mid' 'teens) but I could feel the fall of the shackels and responsibilities of my parents. To me, there was a slight void of a few years when the music scene seemed content on copying what had already happened and I felt a bit out of it. Then out of the blue Roxy Music happened, and what an experience that was. It was finally my time, my scene; something I could relate to. I have to say that Roxy were the best thing to happen to me (music wise) and still consume a huge part of my heart and nothing will ever change that, not ever. I deliberately did not include any other artistes or bands as I only wanted to quickly mention how Roxy Music found me! Well, the 70s were definitely the last hoo-rah, artistically, I agree. But I don't think it's quite accurate to say that RM--or anybody else at the time--was wholly interested in their own time. Their earliest style was a bizarre and wonderful synthesis of every decade from the 20s onward (Andy in his sci-fi neo-50s getup, Eno doing his best Bette Davis impersonation, Bryan as glam 50s/60s gang member). And everywhere you looked in the 70s, there was a revival of the past: Grease, Godfather and Chinatown are three film examples that immediately spring to mind. You could say of the 70s that it was the last decade that saw a proliferation of art for art's sake, rather than art for profit. But I can't explain the sea change into the 80s and beyond--will leave it for someone with more savvy than I have. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 07:53:00 -0800 (PST) From: mt cafe Subject: [AVALON] To Paula.
