Ala - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------ I see your thinking on Siren - had it on repeat while constructing a TV unit last night so can heartily confirm that it is a splendid record to which one can contemplate interior decor LMAO. Trouble with Siren is the production always sounded a bit flat in contrast to the very laid back nature of the material which seems to want a more crisp sound - End Of The Line, Sentimental Fool are crying out for softer arrangements (its like they were changing direction but trying to appease their rockier contingent of fans) and if Id been in the producers chair Just Another High would have had nothing but Brian, piano and a string quartet (though the album version I still rate as one of Sirens finest moments). The only dodgy track is she Sells and thats resued by that stonking mid section which takes the track somewhere else! As for Flesh and Blood - theres no irony there - my copy went to the bottom of the pile when I heard the covers of In The Midnight Hour and 8 Miles High.... Bryan should be ashamed! Thus proving even a genius needs a day off! Id really love to apprciate Manifesto more but its one of those albums where I can listen to it but I simply dont "get it" - it sounds a little ramshackle. Today Carien directed her comments "to Paula, Karin, Heather, and all the other Romantics". I thoroughly enjoyed them. And Paula made an extremely articulate defense of the whole notion of wanting to figuring out an artist's motivations (at the same time figuring out our own). I particularly like the metaphor of seeing our own life through their crystal ball...and I agree that this is what Bryan himself would do. He started out himself as a fan of obscure music (at least, obscure in his small, working-class home town). I wish there was a sub-list of the Avalon list, perhaps called "Connoisseurs" -- you know, those of us who don't just want to get directions to a pub near a performance venue, disparage other peoples' favorite songs or albums, or joke about Bryan's divorce or make tittilating comments about his relationship with Katie Turner, but who want to exchange our perceptions on things perhaps just a bit deeper than that. But I know this makes some list members uncomfortable. I deeply appreciate all of your inputs to the list, in fact I just scan the others looking for yours. OK, I admit to enjoying the little "KMart" thread. And I feel bad that someone of Paula's calibre is forced to defend herself for daring to delve beneath the surface in her comments about "Our Hero", but she does, because so many on the list claim not to care about Bryan Ferry's personal life. They believe (I think, foolishly) that an artist and his art are distinctly separate, but I don't think it's necessarily true. I mean, Bryan Ferry is not merely an actor who portrays other characters in various roles. In his music and his poetry (or, we could call them lyrics), he is baring his soul and sharing it with us. And I also agree with the comment that he knows we Avalonians are kindred spirits, and bringing us joy at performances brings him joy as well. I've seen some of these "I only care about the music" guys at concerts, they are every bit as engaged as the girl behind to me in Boston in November who cried through the entire performance. They just show it in a different way. Like so many of us on the list (apparently both male and female), after being exposed to the art of Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry, I developed an insatiable appetite for more. I went to the websites. I began to collect the albums I had been missing, and augment my collection with bootlegs whenever possible. I also acquired books, articles, videos, and other memorabilia, because I wanted to know what Bryan Ferry was all about. And, as Paula so insightfully put it, figure out what I'm all about. If his art means so much to me, if it strikes a chord so deep, what does that say about me? But I sense it is not "politically correct" to post this to the entire list. I am just going to post it to you four..."the Connoisseurs".
