But I'm afraid I cannot buy your 'tortured soul' or 'unrequited and never to be equalled love'- theories in connection with our hero. He must have have been very proud of - and happy with - Jerry some time in the past, and has undoubtedly been so with Lucy, too. And then they drifted apart and his interest in these women faded. We will never know exactly why, but I would not be surprised if MUSIC, VISUAL ARTS and STARDOM have always come first for him, passions a single woman can never compete with. A woman can be his muse at some point in his life, but when such a muse turns out to be another flesh-and-blood person with her own cravings and hangups, she will get less inspiring as time goes by. And lo and behold, there will always be new muses to choose from for cool, stylish men like Bryan. Maybe we, as his devoted fans, are his utmost object of aspiration and inspiration. Doesn't he seem to enjoy our meetings at gigs ever better? Isn't he always trying to please us, does it not satisfy him most to have his great songs pondered about and unravelled by what he himself calls 'the connaisseurs'? Is it not his deepest wish to be admired and looked up to, to be fulfilled in his longing to act the distant, mysterious star? Realising the Bogart in himself? And aren't we lucky to be playing this game with him for so long? Life's just a play, and we're the actors in it.... We will never know exactly why, but I would not be surprised if MUSIC, VISUAL ARTS and STARDOM have always come first for him, passions a single woman can never compete with.< What about a married woman? Kidding. I agree his primary commitment may (and should forever, please) be to his art, as it is with every serious musician I've known. I see him as a incomparably gifted artist/romantic idealist who, like many of us, yearns for the perfect love, the never-fading passion, and has to settle for, as you said, periods of passion and changing muses and maybe sometimes simply seeks contentment and finds peace with his family life and children and normalcy. But I don't think the true romantic ever lets the dream die. From his music and some things he's said in interviews about depression and things like that, I think he's an emotional rollercoaster. Though he's an icon to so many, he still gets hurt and hurt very badly and I think that never goes away entirely, just goes into remission in good times, like when he's excited about a new woman, maybe, or distracted by his art. But art is about reaching into yourself, so it isn't painless, though it's fulfilling, especially when you can make something good and that others love out of both the good and bad of your life. And just to say one other thing, taking into account all the interesting comments on this subject the last few days. IDENTIFICATION = ART APPRECIATION, whether it be music, painting, whatever. That's the way it's supposed to be. It's natural to love the things we empathize and identify with. The wonderful thing about art is that different people get different things out of it, identify with different aspects of it, interpret it in different ways. There's nothing unnatural about projecting ourselves into art. And I think it's fine and natural curiosity to try to put the artist's personal life into perspective and sort out how they got where they are artistically, because so many of us feel that to some small extent we've walked in their shoes, and in some ways they become our crystal ball. We're sorting out ourselves. Music has been one of the great loves of my life. I remember when I first knew. A hopelessly yearning teenager in Oklahoma laying between the speakers in my parents' living room, listening to Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. I knew I HAD to be part of it some way, had to be one of them, but it would be 3 more years before I could see a way to begin. I loved music enough that I devoted 20 years to it and only it. Bryan is one of those rare people who started with little, dreamed big, and has managed to live his dream to a great extent. He's one of the greatest artists of all time -- for me, THE greatest, and I'm lucky enough to be living contemporaneously with him, to be in exactly the place and time where I belong and where I can satisfy at least THAT passion in myself. I'm going to take full advantage of my fortuitous position here on earth and soak up as much from him and others as I can, because I know I'm lucky to be one of the few in all of history who had the opportunity to experience the art firsthand in its own time instead of posthumously, as it has always been until the last half of the 20th Century. As long as our curiosity doesn't cross the line to the point to where we're actually interfering in their lives and we're not doing anything to harm them (such as posting negative articles about them, for instance), we're just being avid fans, and I don't understand people who are critical of that. Without us, their art would be for nothing and their legacy far more limited. Bryan's life is as fascinating as Anthony & Cleopatra or Arthur & Guinevere, Bogie & Bacall. He goes down in history, folks, part fact, part myth. But he's THERE. So I guess until and unless I'm on his payroll and under contract to shut the hell up, I'll be speculating, from time to time, on what the man is up to! And I make no apologies for it. Meanwhile, I'll buy everything he puts out and tell the world they should too. Everyone should be happy. I know I am. All of this chat about Bryan and Lucy's breakup -- does he still love Jeri? etc-- seems a bit silly to me. I was in Arkansas (of all places) last week, and had a very delightful dinner with a delightful couple who used to be married. They are now "just friends". Their theory, a very good one I think, is that the institution of marraige was fine as long as people mated at 14 and died at 35. (This also goes a long way to explain traditional gender roles, but lets not go there...) BUt we live in a far more complicated world, with far more info thrown at us on a daily basis, and much shorter attention spans, and a range of opportunities thrown at us that would have been unimaginable, say, a century ago. So, they surmised, we are no longer "wired" for lifelong mating. I say in light of this, we should take Bryan and Lucy's breakup at face value. They had a good two decade run, and now its over. Wish them both well, and hope its not too bloody. Labels have big wholesale specials on what is known as "midline catalog" where they sell retail chains a huge bunch of it for "bin sales" and give them deferred billing and lots of discounts or free goods and it enables them to have big bin sales real cheap. You won't see the best-selling releases in midline sales (like you probably won't see current releases or Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon or Led Zeppelin IV, the best selling of old releases), but you'll see some great old standards like this a couple of times a year anyway, things that stores still need to stock to have a proper selection but which don't normally have a good "turn." These sales pick the turn up and push some product and the retailer isn't at much risk to buy a lot because they know these things will eventually sell off anyway and they bought them cheap and have extended billing. Win/win. However, is Bryan feeling the pinch? Have you ever talked to a divorcing man who wasn't? Ouch! I have the full set list from the lighting engineer, if anyone wants confirmation, but am in a hurry to catch a plane to BF's home country - well, Newcastle-on-Tyne anyway. Weird though - a willowy blonde walked on to the stage during JG, almost in slow motion, approached him and placed a kiss on his cheek, a split second before which BF suddenly noticed her and leapt a full metre away from her in shock. Of course, once she was in the grasp of a security guard, he made a vain attempt to clasp her as though he wasn't bothered at all while she disappeared from view. All a bit nervy, a bit panicky; yet still he made the whole set without speaking except to introduce players. Also, the bar was posted with notices that BF had especially asked for no glasses or bottles, so people had to make do with plastic beakers.
