Theres's something that doesn't usually happen in the same sentence! ;-) AMA2 sounded fab, if circumstances had been different I would have been there, but it just wasn't possible. Good to see a few familiar faces in the crowd in Manchester last night, and we got Can't Let Go, Virginia Plain and Goodnight Irene, which made the night quite enjoyable. And although I understand the sentiment of playing Goodnight Irene last, it was a bit of a damp way to end the show, we needed one more rocking tune, most of the people round me were a bit bewildered and just talked through it! An instrumental version of Always Unknowing saw us out of the Apollo. SimonG (of course I'm only joking about Wales, it was my second home as a kiddie). I wasn't looking forward to it as much as the set-list wouldn't show many signs of change but for some reason this one was the most enjoyable. The venue was approx 70% full, it's one of the larger venues on the Frantic tour so no surprises there as the last gig at the Manchester Apollo had not been that long ago. Crowd rush as usual on the first few notes of "The Thrill of it all". Bryans voice was good and he looked as though he really enjoyed this one. The backing singers were fine, one at each side of the stage, plenty of interaction between them and Chris Spedding. Everyone on stage seemed to be really enjoying it, plenty of smiles all round, tried to force a smile from Chris Spedding but no such luck! A premature start to one of the songs (Love Is The Drug?) before Bryan had finished his introductions added to the fun. Missed Lucy's stage presence, having said that if she was there then I would have liked Out Of The Blue to be in the set-list. Judging by previous reports, some set-lists had been curtailed. Nice to see "Can't Let Go" back in there, it's been played on a few Ferry/Roxy tours so it must be one that Bryan enjoys. Virginia Plain was back, a good crowd pleaser. Highlights for me were the up-tempo numbers like "Thrill of It All", "Cruel", "Tokyo Joe" etc.. One encore (four songs), we got to Woolly Bully and I started thinking next one is "Hard Rain"..heard the first few notes of the last song and it was Goodnight Irene!! Completely unexpected!! Even though this must rate as one of my least liked Ferry songs, it was ok. Although the set-list doesn't change very much it's good to see at least one or two new songs creep in. Nice to walk out of the Apollo with an instrumental version of "Always Unknowing" in the background. Great night and best gig of the tour so far for me. Enjoy the rest of the tour everyone. After a bit of a "heavy evening" (I blame Jane and Al Fraser for buying the wine the night before) and being forced to watch Celtic v Rangers (1 - 0 tough Len, they didn`t deserve to win), midday, in a bar full of screaming "Jocks" I was not entirely sure that I would be in a fit state to enjoy the long night that lay ahead. But the power of Roxy/Ferry to mask the discomforts in life is amazing. Inside the venue watching the video of Roxy "A Really Good Time" (which I have never seen before) and the song it being in my all time top five, I was recovering fast, and, as soon as the bands opening song Remake/Remodel hurtled into my brain I was enjoying myself. What a set list and a gig. What a performance that was. The set list is now familiar to everyone and the highlight for me was the extended version of " Mother of Pearl" which was brilliant with everyone singing and clapping along, and "All I Want Is You" an unexpected delicious treat that followed. Well time slips away as we all know and the set seemed to end so quickly (Afterwards Ron asked me wether in my opinion the Rotterdam gig was better that AMA2. Well, after thinking about it, in Rotterdam, everyone seemed to agree that San Simeone was the highlight at that gig and, although it was as equal here, to my mind it was not as distinguished as before because the other songs performed around it were of such quality - therefore I think Saturday was even better, and what a way to finish!!) Then a Roxy/Ferry disco ensued. Brilliant. Everyone was dancing, singing, and chanting (I did notice however that nobody, including myself, has yet mastered the lyrics of "A Hard Rain") and it was great to see that everyone really was having a really good time. Well off to the raffle of which I refuse to talk about as Jimbo ended up with "my prize", and Jocelyn, THAT was NOT what we had agreed!! By 5.30am the bar finally shut (I think) and final farewells to everyone. All in all that was one of the best nights (mornings!) I have ever had - probably never to be repeated but never to be forgotten. Thanks once again to everyone (especially to Jocelyn, Johnny and of course the band) involved for the enormous amount of hard work and effort involved in making the evening such a success. Hello to everyone I met. Regards to all, Nigel. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 09:26:43 -0600 From: "Paula Brown" Subject: [AVALON] 3/11/03 Article Portsmouth's The News Online The Guide Hi everyone, Here's a little article in anticipation of the Portsmouth gig tomorrow from Portsmouth's The News Online's The Guide. XXX, Paula Smooth operator takes a frantic turn FRANTIC is not a word one you would normally associate with king of the lounge lizards Bryan Ferry, but somehow it's ended up as the title of his latest album. 'The title Frantic comes from a lyric that didn't end up on the album, but seemed to me a good title for this record,' he explains. 'It's been a hectic couple of years for me, both touring and recording, and the mood in which this album was created was nothing if not frantic. ' In fact the latest solo album from the Roxy Music mainman is an energetic, effervescent set, blending stylish self-penned songs with a handful of emotionally-charged covers. Refreshed by last year's triumphant Roxy Music reunion tour, Ferry's back singing songs with hooks rather than simply going for the smooth feel that's served him so well. 'Having touched on the 30s with As Time Goes By, this time I wanted to do something quite different, and make a guitar-based album with a direct, live feel,' explains Bryan. And the line-up he assembled speaks for itself. Musicians involved include Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Dave Stewart (who co-wrote several numbers) and Roxy tour stalwarts Paul Thompson, Chris Spedding, Colin Good and Lucy Wilkins. Even Roxy veteran from the Pyjamarama and Virginia Plain days, Brian Eno, has collaborated with Ferry on the co-written finale I Thought, and also plays on Goddess of Love. 'And he sings with gusto on both!' says Bryan. Working with Brian Eno again was something he obviously enjoyed, and he says he still looks back on their early days with fondness. After Eno's exit, Ferry's got more soulful and laidback, but he says: 'If the earlier phase was my favourite, there's a certain beauty in that later work - more accessible, less angular. And we had to keep changing: we didn't want a one-dimensional career.' Thirty years on no-one could accuse him of that. Bryan Ferry plays at Portsmouth Guildhall on Wednesday, March 12. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 20:18:53 +0100 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Renate_Schr=F6der?= Subject: [AVALON] AMA2 was fabulous!!! It was my very first AMA party and I'd never seen Remake/Remodel live on stage before. So I came from Germany - 2 hours to Amsterdam on the fast ICE train - for the big event!! My friend Karin Verboom met me at the station and showed me the way to my hotel - quite a few kilometres from the station (by tram), but it was very good accommodation. Later we went for a shopping trip in the centre of Amsterdam and I met a Roxy fan from England at the Centraal Station, Peter Ryan. Then it was back to the hotel for a snack and some nicer clothes and -- after that it was party time!! At 7pm it all began and the venue at the "Winston Hotel" (actually a discotheque) was soon crowded with people.Of course I met Johnny and Jocelyn, but also Christian Soetemann (the 2 of us were the only Germans that night), Edwin van der Ende, Remake singer Ron, John Dillon (from the UNITED STATES!) and many other fans. The video show had messages from Phil (he also talked about the new Roxy live album), Paul and Lucy and of course some rare live footage from Bryan/Roxy, like "A Really Good Time" or "If There Is Something" and "More Than This" from the 2001 tour. That was the first highlight! But there was of course more to come, and Remake/Remodel were next!! Well, Ron impressed me with his great voice and super "impersonation" of Bryan (but without that textbook, actually!!) and the band was excellent, too!! Some fans said they were "better than Roxy" (you must be joking...!!) and they played all our favourite songs.... After that there was a Roxy/Bryan disco and many fans danced to the well-known tunes. It was nice to hear for instance "Don't Stop The Dance" played in a discotheque again and some young people (starting to come in) wondered what on earth was that music!!! Then the last highlight -- the raffle of course!! Well, you all know the list with loads of prizes on it and there were the "multiple" winners (plus the "normal" winners, of course, with less prizes), getting all the goodies like rare live cds or the "Siren" LP signed by BF, Jerry Hall and Anthony Price... 2 people had also guessed the Remake set list correctly, and one of them was me (2nd prize) -- I got a nice picture disc with Bryan interviews on it!! So -- it was a FABULOUS party and I'd like to thank Johnny and Jocelyn for their hard work which made AMA2 such a GREAT SUCCESS!!! Everybody was "ferry" happy afterwards ....really a night to remember!!!!
