Any > thoughts? Paula I disagree!! I think the only thing that has improved since the 70's & 80's is the production itself. Today the production is very often the most important thing. Usually more important than the melody. Many of the top-hits today sound brilliant, but there's not much more to it. ...and it bores me so! I'm so glad we have a few groups that are still innovative. A group like King Crimson continues to release uncommercial cds, with fresh, new music that nobody's ever heard before. Some of it is beautiful, some of it demanding, some of it not very good at all. They don't try to make hits, they only make their own music. They are about to release a new cd now, and I'm so curious. Gee, I hate to say it 'cause I really like King Crimson but their output over the last 2-3 years has been very repetitive. First they put out a "sampler" album, then an EP then the album itself, all with mostly the same material. Fripp has also continued to mine certain nuggets such as Larks Tongue in Aspice. I think we're up to LTIA VI now and there's now Fracktured to go with Fracture. Dark, demanding, daring. Usually. But I could do with some new avenues. In general I don't believe in music awards but it does create a venue for seeing artists like The Boss and Elvis Costello to rock out together. "I thought" they did a good job on London Calling, but was less impressed with Dave Grohls part. Also, what the heck was Peter Gabriel doing closing out the the show (not musically)? Did he play earlier or was he there to convince Eminem to rap on his next millenium project:) All in all it bored me to tears as usual. Music for the masses... I think Norah Jones, while very talented, is also overrated, and should not have walked away with 5 grammy's. She is a novelty, and time will tell if she has staying power. I thought Elvis Costello saved London Calling and really carried it along for the rest to follow. ( Do you think he will ever be inducted into the RR Hall of fame?) Although these things are drug out far to long. There is always a few hi-lights--- Simon & Garfunkel together for the first time in 9 yrs. doing "Sound of Silence", what a sound they both still have. Norah Jones such a voice, & John Mayer.fresh very good talent. Coldplay was such overkill so was a lot of others. The Boss did what he came to do with "Rising" he didn't fell on that one. Some I just had to change the channel when they came on & hoped they'd be gone when I flipped back. Some even sang off key. Colleen, the "chocolate grinder" to which I refer is not a spare part in the Godiva junkyard, as you assume. The Chocolate Grinder was a recurring symbol in the ouvre of the early conceptualist artist Marcel Duchamp. Marcel Duchamp was probably the most influential modernist/conceptualist of the 20th century, and heavily influenced Richard Hamilton (Ferry's early teacher), many pop artists, and Ferry himself (The Bride Stripped Bare - after all!). Here is an image of the chocolate grinder: http://www.surrealist.com/new/selectedinfo.asp?artistid=10&fileid=6 As with many of Duchamp's originals, the chocolate grinder also found it's way into duchamp's later "reproductions", one of which was "The Bride Stripped Bare by Har Bachelors, Even" (La mariie mise ` nu par ses cilibataires, mjme). The Bride Stripped Bare (note the chocolate grinder) can be seen at: http://www.luxflux.net/artists/duchamp/duch-mar.htm I'm saying this from recollection, but I believe the significance of the chocolate grinder was something to do with sexuality, consumerism, assembly lines, and objects/images of desire (such as chocolate) which are ground out. Duchamp said something like "now the bachelors must grind their own chocolate". Duchamp said many wonderful things.
