Subject: [AVALON] Re: Message to the old Dutch Roxy fans .... A quick wake up from lurking mode ... In the early eighties 3 glossy Roxy Music Magazines were published (in broken English), edited on a kitchen table in Nijmegen (NL), by 2 guys who met during a long Roxy pre-ticket sales night in Rotterdam (sorry to correct you Han), where the Magazine idea as excuse to meet the band was born. Later on the excellent editor / photographer Ton continued with 1 BF Magazine; he pursued his career later as publisher of the Dutch Runners World and Mens Health. The other good-looking guy had to discontinue as his vet studies distracted his attention. The Magazines are collector items nowadays, as some other parafernalia we collected during that time. Hey Remake Ron, will you show one at AmsterMad Affair II? See you there, Joep. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 18:33:38 EST From: OBrienFerry@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Great song, but... We have lots of favourite/worst song threads on the list but I don't recall having a thread about songs that have bits we love and hate in the same song, so here is a wee starter: Sea Breezes (Roxy version) I love that track during the verses with Bryan's chorister vocals and Andy's haunting oboe but the middle section "now that we are lonely" sounds so amateurish. It sounds as if it was the last thing they were working on when they made the album and hadn't time to finish it. She Sells Love the piano riff at the start, the whole rhythm track, and Ferry's vocals throughout but Andy's sax just cuts right through and spoils it for me in the instrumental refrain between verses. As The World Turns Ferry is in croon mode here, Perry Como/Bing Crosby eat your heart out then in comes this guitar part by Fripp (whom I admire a lot of his wrok with King Crimson & David Sylvian) that spoils the whole mood of the track. Great topic, John. I tend to agree on Sea Breezes. I love the idea of a contrast, but the middle part just pales. On the other hand, I love the middle part of "Would You Believe," with Andy's honking sax, but never much cared for the vocals. There are probably several songs on ATGB about which I'm ambivalent. I love the beginning of "Rock of Ages," but then it peters out a little for me. In contrast, I always disliked the "buttercups, daisies" opening of Just Like You, but the rest of the song is masterful. I have similar feelings about "Amazona." On a related subject, there are songs that I really like, but they go on waaaayy too long. You are my Sunshine In Every Dream Home a Heartache (most live versions) Psalm My Only Love (ANY live version) Pete S. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, February 21, 2003 6:33 PM Subject: [AVALON] Great song, but... > We have lots of favourite/worst song threads on the list but I don't recall > having a thread about songs that have bits we love and hate in the same song, > so here is a wee starter: > > Sea Breezes (Roxy version) > > I love that track during the verses with Bryan's chorister vocals and Andy's > haunting oboe but the middle section "now that we are lonely" sounds so > amateurish. There is no Roxy or Ferry album that is unlistenable - favourites will wax and wane. A few months ago I could not stop listening to "These Foolish Things", before that "Frantic" , before that "In Your Mind" and "Manifesto", "Taxi", "Country Life" Now its "Flesh & Blood" and I can see "Avalon" taking centre stage in the next few months. I remember very well how much I had use for all the English songs I had in my brain, when we started to learn English at school! I had learned the lyrics by listening, but didn't understand a word, except 'I love you', I believe. Heather, I'm sure you will find wonderful artists singing in Danish, but I guess it's almost the same promblem in Denmark and Norway, that the artists chose to sing in English, so the assortment is limited. I like soul singer Hanne Boel among others, but she has no Danish CDs! I can't see how you can learn Danish by listening to Norwegian or Swedish music either! I have seen Danes and Swedes prefer to speak English together! Well, well...Norwegian is a bit easier for Danes to understand and our written languages is almost similar, but several Danes have asked me if I'm Swedish! I agree with Daniel that Ulf Lundell is a great artist and he sings in Swedish. We have great artists in Norway, like Royksopp, Aha, Madrugada and many others, but they sing in English! We have of course lots of artist singing in Norwegian too, but if I should suggest one man I'm sure could learn you to speak proper Norwegin, I would say listen to Odd Borretzen (with an / over the o in the surname). He's not singing so much,.. mostly talking his own melancoly/humorous/poetic lyrics backed by light warm jazz music (guitar, piano, string bass, drums) with his wonderful rich voice. Very relaxed. "Noen ganger er det all right" is my favourite. (Sometimes it is all right). All the best Kari ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V8 #50 *************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
