I like the elegant architecture with lots of trees, glass and concrete(?). The mirrors are a good metaphor for Bryan and Roxy - a little spacey, glittery and shiny - and mirrors are also obsessed with fashion. Here in Denmark there is a lot of nice modern architecture. I'm glad to see Bryan appreciates it too. Not as "techie" as my older brother who used 'patch-cords', I crudely set the microphone of my new cassette recorder next to the monophonic speaker of my bedroom radio. WLS Chicago (my how far those AM waves traveled) was my link to the exciting world of non classical music. There, in bed, I lay waiting to hear my new favorite song - Paul Revere and The Raiders' "Cherokee People". An hour went by, good 'Motown' tunes played, but that wasn't what I wanted that evening. Nearly asleep I heard the keyboard intro start up. With lightning speed I pushed 'record'. To this day, I sometimes take out that ancient cassette recorder and drift back in time to simpler days while listening to this song. "So proud to live. So proud to die." Yah, Arnie, I hear similarities with Roxy Music. I am often surprised to read contributions to the list where someone states something to the effect that, 'Bryan Ferry or Roxy Music invented or revolutionized some major aspect of Seventies music'. Great music isn't formed in a vacuum. I do wonder sometimes, who the very first musician was, when the very first singer sang. Pre coyote perhaps? Were our feathered friends the first whistlers? Did humans invent music? Song? ... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 11:41:04 EST From: DEAGLERR@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] martina [was Re: avalon-digest V8 #39] In a message dated 2/11/03 3:11:58 PM, m_shanahan@mail2batman.com writes: << martina: folky-perky >> Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. After spending a month away from my desktop pc I was rather surprised that the right channel feed to its speakers was greatly diminished. This surprise lead to another discovery: A glitch with my NVIDIA soundcard existed, and one may only guess to the length of time that this pc's audio has been less than optimal! Throughout troubleshooting and testing, I employed the "Frantic" cd as test subject. Glitch corrected by the time "I Thought" began spinning, I was astounded by what I heard! I had previously concluded that this final tune on "Frantic" was perhaps the best of the lot. Certainly, I thought that "I Thought" was Ferry first rate. Well 'Katie Bar The Door!', the clarity and definition of the sounds I experienced, the depth of composition, all stood out - the richness of the piece as perceived earlier instantly magnified with this 'improved listening environment' and "I Thought" lassoed my interest with its newly recognized understated elegance. So much, that I will now share my impressions and thoughts about "I Thought". Without doubt, I think, "I Thought" is the product of an artist who is maturing well. I write not about age maturation but of artistic maturation. This is a very confident piece of work, one I hope that Mr. Ferry recognizes as such. I perceive this song's lyric and music is all about 'being true to ones own self'. To 'be true to oneself', one must have assimilated a peaceful resignation that the search for what one wants, what one thinks (s)he needs, is a life long process that must continue until ones last breath is drawn. This peaceful resignation exists when the subjective becomes firmly thought of, well-planted and nurtured within a healthy psyche, evolving into an objective. The objective is the twinning of the universal desire to be whole and complete, coupled with the realization that worldly matter is by nature incomplete. - It is an acceptance, without recrimination, that things are imperfect, including the self. This search for perfection and harmony within one's self, one's world, and with one's own love, this looking for the integral component that will complete the individual's self is both melancholic because the search never ends, yet is hopeful because the journey is lifelong. There is always hope: Something to reckon with in day to day living, something to look forward to - a goal that drives, propels the individual through life. D'jtre raison. Due to its melodic charm, "I Thought" is very easy listening. Beware! Simple, the work is not. The instrumentation, vocals and sounds are intricate and expertly blended into a rich depth of texture, a wall of sound, that leaves little to desire but much to imagine. Beneath its lyrical surface, "I Thought" is a complex song of hope and need, a song of understanding. A very mature lyric from, perhaps, someone who has actualized some important states of mind over the years. Deceptively simple, and well aged: Where the mythical search for Echo and the search for harmony firmly join together in self-preservation. Could this be, 'know thyself'? Nice to hear Ferry moving on! Best wishes. The recent discussion of Martina Sorbara makes me think about the other opening acts I've seen with Ferry and Roxy - Rufus Wainwright with Roxy 2001, and Dionne Farris with Ferry in 1995. All three were folksy and very interesting songwriters. Who else have you seen as opening acts? I agree with earlier discussion about Martina, I thought her to be the most perky of the three, and the cutest as well.
