Bryan Ferry is a singer/performer/writer/record producer so what is so odd about him doing some concerts, that's what singers do, they go on stage and sing to an audience. We don't have to go to the shows if we don't want to. There must be many on our list who live outside UK thinking we must sound like spoiled brats who have had too much of a good thing. Statistics show: Since the beginning of the As Time Goes By tour in Washington November 1999 until the end of March this year Bryan will have played 213 dates over 3 and a half years if I am not mistaken. During a similar length of time from January 1972 - June 1975 I have a record of at least 197 dates. This period is hailed by many as Ferry's best period but yet we mock him for doing similar now. In those days Ferry needed so much exposure as he was building a career but now he is doing what most of us want and that is to revive a career, either way he needs all this exposure. The main difference from the 2 periods I quote is that all those shows were to promote 4 albums of originals and there were a couple of cover albums thrown in for good measure at they same time, whereas the last 3 and a half years have only produced an album of '30's covers and another album of half covers and 7 original songs. My main complaint would be that he hasn't released enough stuff lately and I would rather he was back in the studio working on a new album, it can't take him long to release another album due to the many unreleased recordings we read about. The more he tours the longer it will take to put a new album out. A lengthy tour like this with several ap pearances in the same areas is the 'live show' equivalent of him releasing so many compilation albums, "We have heard it all before". I don't have a problem with a singer doing performances as that's part of their job, it's the writer/record producer part of his job description that seems to be getting neglected. I would have much preferred him to use the next 6 moths finishing an album and releasing and touring it in the autumn.
