I will only print the first paragraph, but you may visit the entire article at the link below. Maybe NOW Bryan will deign to visit Texas (sniff). Until then, I remain Stranded in the Big Country, Paula http://www.forbes.com/2003/01/03/cx_cv_0103dow.html Soft Rock Hotel Christina Valhouli When Dayna Lee was commissioned to design the new Hotel Derek in Houston, she got her inspiration in an unusual place. She imagined the hotel to be the home of an imaginary aging British rock star named Derek, and designed everything to his taste and standards. "I didn't want to create a Texan Disneyland," says Lee, principal designer at Los Angeles-based firm Powerstrip. "I wanted to do something different." While Lee says she did not have a specific person in mind, she concedes that Derek has a dose of Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger in him, among others. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 21:34:03 +0100 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: [AVALON] Bryan Ferry covered on Swedish TV Bryan Ferry was covered on Swedish TV tonight! Which gives me an opportunity to give all of you a chance to become rich. You simply buy the format rights to the Swedish quiz show On the track, a show that I've been dying to inform you about for years... And now I am on topic. Two teams of two semi- or real celebrities of opposite sex shall find out where one of total three journies is heading by looking a a film shoot from a train or a bus. It starts with a filmed journey to a city and some clues from the host. Then there are more filmclips from each city and follow-up questions. As well as music, when they were in Aberdeen the orchestra performed Annie Lennox, in Auckland the orchestra covered Crowded House, in New Orleans a medley of Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino and Britney Spears, and in Washington the did a version of Marvin Gaye's I heard it thorogh the grapevine. Today the first trip went to Newcastle. They showed the castle outside, one of England's oldest, and clips from the Harry Potter movie (who wrote it etc). And then they played a medley of House of the rising son, Avalon and Every breath you take, asking the names of the Newcastle-bred lead singers of the groups that made them famous. None of the two teams could answer Bryan Ferry, the male member of one team (the champ is a former weight lifter with an amazing photographic memory!) said Eric Burden was his hero and the female member of the other team said that she had showed Sting aka Gordon Sumner her pink bra (her father is a very well known Swedish actor, named the sexiest man in Sweden 15 years ago when he was 55ish). For 15 years On the track (Pa sparet) has been one of the most highly rated evening shows on Swedish TV, led by two men in their 50's and with an all female orchester. One episode was one of the ten most watched TV shows in all of 2002. Few shows stand a chance against the combination of engaging personalities, fabled cities and music.
