Whilst other people covering Roxy songs is an interesting subject, I did rather recoil in horror at the news that the loathsome Jamiroquai was to be the man to do it. Still, season of goodwill and all that, and I sat down with an ice-cool JD and Coke and an open mind, praying that he wouldn't litter Love Is The Drug with his usual endless 'di di doo dee dee dee' utterings while gliding around the stage (as is his usual want). I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, his little sparrows fart of a voice didn't exactly do the song much justice, but at least he did it fairly straight, which I thought showed a little respect to the original. Well, done, sir. However, this was completely undone, and all my preconceptions of the man bore fruit, in his chat about the song with the presenter afterwards. Jamiroquai described the original as 'out of time, out of tune, and badly played', whilst adding that the musicians were clearly 'off their boxes' when it was originally recorded. Coming from him, and having heard his own music before, I found this rather ironic, and it proved to me what an odious, untalented little nothing of a man he really is. Just an observation. Moving on... In todays 'Mail On Sunday' newspaper here in the UK, in the Pop column, journalist Tim de Lisle gives his favourite 10 tracks of 2002. At No. 5, he lists 'I Thought', of which he says : "With the album Frantic, Ferry found himself again after spending the nineties stranded in his own perfectionism. This was the best of several highlights, and only the second song ever co-written by Ferry and Brian Eno. The music evokes early Eno, a cheering ska-flavoured slice of layered adult pop, but the mood, all romanticism and regret, is very Ferry. A classic." It is very heartening to see our man BF mentioned in print in such glowing terms. It is something that has occured frequently in the last year or so, which is a great thing. Good reviews of Frantic seemed fairly common this past year, and took a lot of us pleasantly by surprise, particularly as most music papers now tend to lean towards rave reviews of albums by airbrushed children. So, it is nice to see a little change in the musical wind, as it were. It reminds me of my shock of how the NME reviewed Roxy Music on their reunion tour in 2001. I was dreading what they would say, yet they came up with "I went to see the past, and ended up seeing the future", or words to that effect. Smiling faces all round at Ferry HQ this yuletide, I wouldn't wonder. Happy New Year to you all when it comes, btw, and stand by for an announcement re 'Mad Affair 2' early in January... Reecey...
