Richard Thompson (no slouch) said that Terry's interviews are like being interviewed by your biggest fan, only she's much smarter than you. Local hero John Cusack said its like being interviewed by your big sister, only she knows your work better than you do. Only on 2 occasions in my life have I witnessed a live performance when I thought "this is the future" One was obviously Roxy, the other was the Clash on the White Riot tour in '77. There were only about 200 people in the hall (De Montfort in Leicester) & pehaps half of those walked out, but the energy & blistering guitars that came from the group that night was awesome. I saw the Clash &/or Strummer live about 7 or 8 times & he never failed to excite, when I got divorced I had a terrific time kicking the sofa along to "Safe European Home"! If you ever get depressed I recommend playing the Clash at Maximum Volume... A version of Police and Thieves that seemed to last about 30 minutes - probably didn't really - but I wished hadn't ended. One of those musical moments (or half hours) that takes you right to somewhere else. They really hit a groove with that reggae beat and just ran with it. I don't think the band wanted to stop either! The rest of the set was a blinder too, but that was the one that really did it for me. I saw them around London a few times too, but nothing quite equaled that particular night. So sad to hear the news today of Joe Strummers death. I had the pleasure of seeing The Clash a number of times in the 70's, mainly at the Apollo in Glasgow. You were always guaranteed a rip roaring gig, full of energy and excitement. Joe was a man of the people and always had time for the fans. I remember on one occasion when the band were in Glasgow to play a "low key" gig at Strathclyde University, Joe and others were in Bruce's Record shop on Union St buying records (dub reggae probably) and chatting with fans. When told that it was to be a "students only" gig, Joe said "We'll see about that". He got a lift on the back of a motorbike up to the gig were he made sure that anyone would be allowed into the show. How do I know this? It was my mates bike. I read in yesterdays Sunday Mail that the original members of The Clash were due to reform next year for the purposes of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Yeah, it's maybe a touchy subject with some but along with Roxy surely The Clash deserved it. Have there been two more influencial bands in the last 30 years? Oh aye and the second reason for my bad day. I got paid off from work. Going to have more beer now and get really wrecked!
