How did you get into Roxy and Ferry? I got into Roxy in the mid 70's. "Love is the Drug" was the first single I remember and the *famous* TV concert on Swedish TV 1976 was a thrill. It was 16--17 and punk rock was around the corner. Bryan Ferry's solo tour in 1977 was the first concert I went to, when it came to Stockholm. We stod up and shouted "Spedding, Spedding!" until Ferry started the next song. I saw the 1979 to 1982 concerts in Stockholm, where I used to live. I liked the TV show from Germany in early 1979. In the mid-80's, I gave up on Ferry, but I like "Mamona" very much. The 1979 live Cd that came out a few years ago wasn't to bad, but not great either. I really liked the reunion tour, more being a Roxy fan then a Ferry fan. "Like a Hurricane" is a great cover. Neil Young sings like he was in some dump, but with Roxy it's like from a luxery hotel bar. :-) A quote I came across: "I went to a doctor who said 'you really shouldn't get breast implants at your age' -I was only 19-- and I said, 'great, all the more reason for you to do it.' He seemed competent, a regular New York guy. It was fun for a while and I liked them for about a year and then couldn't figure out why I had these strange things in front of me." Colleen Thatbs all well and good Colleen, and thanks for the choice. Sadly I remember a time when the list was full of interesting ideas, genuine wit and style. I remember that time too, and even the time before that when there were just a few of us (Hi Bahi, Gene, Arnie, William!) and we kept conversation going. (and let's not forget The Vapor Years) On the other hand there were some nasty personal fights during that time too. It's impossible to not have that happen from time to time--humans are fallible beings, after all. I've been pretty open in private email and I think even here on the list about my concern about the list and my desire to spark more music-related conversation. He just doesn't have the "crooning" style that our Bryan does. I could listen to Bryan perform songs from "As Time Goes By" endlessly. But Rod tried. Gotta give him that much. Eileen in Kew Gardens Yes I agree Eileen,I caught the show by accident actually. I've been a lifelong fan of Stewart/Faces and have seen him perform live countless times. Once upon a time I would have slashed my wrists if I had missed a performance or interview with him on TV, but I'm pleased to say those days are over! The last time I saw him live was about four years ago at a corporate event in Vegas and that will probably be the last time. I know he's had his problems with his throat and I'm sure that has changed his vocal style, but I just feel he can't sing anymore. He may well have many more years in him as a performer, but It will be talking his way through songs along the style of Sinatra.Rod has always been a great Ballad singer and his albums are full of beautiful songs that sadly never see the light of day. No doubt the Album will be a great success and leave ATGB but a fond memory for this years Xmas stocking. He can still sing. For Rod, this was a natural move. He has always quoted Al Jolson as being his earliest influence, and so this was an Album I was expecting to happen sooner or later. I would rather have seen his do an Album of Billie Holiday covers (as I think they would suit his style and possibly open the door to a new generation of Billie Holiday listeners) Unlike Ferry, Rod has always enjoyed a high profile. That's very much his choice I believe, and he has never shunned publicity.Having a great PR machine and a half decent product will pretty much guarantee you sucess. There is no disputing the talent of either, they are just different artists after a piece of the same Pie. If we can, I add my name. - ----- Original Message ----- From: philipcadams@lineone.net An open letter to Colleen. I , for one, would like you to stay. I think you've done a great job against the odds even if at times ,particularly when you started managing the list , I didn't agree with you , you always set out a clear argument for what you believe in and your major interest - above all - was the music that drew us all to Avalon. I don't blame you for throwing in the towel. I know people post things here that they later regret (I've done it) and I know that the written word can be easily misinterpreted without a vocal intonation. But these lists, to keep to their subject , must have rules and these rules must be enforced. And some one has to do that and it can be an unpopular calling and all credit to those that take it on. I would ask you re-consider. If however you decide to go, then I'm sure you'll go safe in the knowledge that you leave it in Daniel's good hands.
