The concert began at 8:00 PM, which left 6 hours for the essential research. The goal was simple: See the show, meet Bryan Ferry. After refueling at the Pink Taco downstairs, we headed into the crisp Nevada air and scoped the scene. The concert was at The Joint, a medium sized venue inside the casino. We conducted a thorough perimeter check of all exiting doors, interviewed employees, interrogated and charmed security and established a hypothesis. "The Door" was decided upon and we could then resume the day's activities. We entered The Joint at 8:00 PM, right as the opening act began. The seats were great, about 40 feet from the stage, slightly off-center. Time was filled with drinks and souvenir fare (I decided on the purple "In Your Mind" album cover tank). Soon, the stage was quiet and the new instruments were tuned. Alone, a blue light radiated the stage and a mystical humming prevailed. Bryan Ferry walked in the room. He took a seat at the piano and poured into The Only Face. Soon after, he dominated center stage in full regalia, cementing his presence as the dangerously cool troubadour. He sang Bob Dylan songs and played the harmonica. He balladeered the ladies with smoky innuendos. He incited verve with funky vibrato and unabashed dance moves. What Man is really cooler than Bryan Ferry? The show lasted for about an hour and a half, during which time, the following songs were performed (in the following order): The Only Face/Don't Think Twice, It's All Right/Carrickfergus/Will You Love Me Tomorrow/Smoke Gets In Your Eyes/My One And Only Love (Instrumental)/The Thrill Of It All/Cruel/Ja Nun Hons Pris/Fool For Love/Tokyo Joe/My Only Love/Tara/Limbo/Boys And Girls/Slave To Love/Jealous Guy/Love Is The Drug/Do The Strand/It's All Over Now Baby Blue/Wooly Bully/Let's Stick Together During the show, we managed to grab some audio clips and pictures of the adventure on stage. A particularly skilled piece consisted of me, halfway through "Love is the Drug," losing control of the camera, unable to film, suddenly filled with the uncontrollable desire to jump up and down with glee. Immediately after the show, we strategically positioned ourselves outside of "The Door." Two limousines and a security guard with a head set confirmed my best wishes; this was the place to be. After what seemed like almost an hour of waiting (by then alongside a handful of other fans), two of the background singers/dancers and Bryan emerged from the back door. After a few impassioned calls, he headed our way. Bryan noticed my outstretched ticket stub (curse me for not packing "Frantic") and signed his name. I blurted out my endearments and asked permission for a photograph with him. Bryan replied "Sure, sure" and happily obliged. A mad impulse drew me to reach for his arm in an attempt to connect with his overwhelming aura. The picture was taken, I thanked him kindly, and he was swept away by another. But indeed, I had my moment in time. And I can't think of a better reason to fly from Seattle to Las Vegas, amidst the threat of terrorism and financial ruin, than to meet Bryan Ferry.
