All the best John Dillon Roxy all the young dudes feather'd & possessed a sparkling sequined mess, so special & so eloquent heavensent what I meant to say is of all the sounds I hear with my humble human ear none are as delicious or nutritious. o roxy, you're my maggie may more beautiful tonight than you ever were back in the day o roxy, your golden boys make a beautiful noise after all these years you still bring tears to my eyes. sweeter sounds from space were never heard. or a perfect turn of word, like a whirlwind, you blow in again & all the songs have been in my head & heart for o so long It's like listening to a kiss. oh, you'll never know how very much we missed you, dearest o roxy, you're my maggie may more beautiful tonight than you ever were back in the day o roxy, your golden boys make a beautiful noise after all these years you still bring tears to my eyes. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 06:59:36 -0500 From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Re: avalon-digest V7 #389 In a message dated 11/25/2002 4:05:02 AM Eastern Standard Time, jeanelouise writes: > So when did Bryan convert to catholicism, then? The fact that someone is invited to the Vatican for such an occasion is viewed by many (Catholics and non-Catholics) as a great honour. Didn't Ferry play at the UN some time ago as well? Oh come on Tom, Whatever peoples religious views may be, being asked to appear at such at event is highy prestigious and a great honour. Considering the harping that went on about Bryan not being nominated for "Halls of fame" etc.., he's potentially asked to perform at the Vatican and people are still trying to knock the idea. Whether it be an appearance at the Vatican or some something else like the Queens Jubilee Concert, these are high profile events that artists cannot buy into. Bit of a difference I think. Sorry, but that just doesn't hang with me at all. Personnally I don't see much difference between the UN, the Brits, the R 'n'R Hall of Fame or singing at the vatican. My point is that he seems to be for hire at any occassion that'll have him, how many corporate shindigs has he played in the last three years, and no I don't see the vatican as anything different from those. As for his relgious leanings, I don't care whether he's roman catholic, jew or muslim as long as he doesn't try to sell it to me on a record and in the end it's his music that has kept me interested in him not what he does in his private life. Btw, just how high profile is this gig? Had it not been for the fact that Ferry may be performing would any of us actually have given it a second though, that's if we had even heard of it in the first place. I'd be a heck of a lot more interested if he had been asked to do the theme for a Bond movie, at least then it would give him some coverage on the world stage. It's a sad fact that when the real prestige gigs come along he never seems to make it on to the bill. Really, I've come to expect a whole lot more from artists whom I admire and respect. Mr. Ferry left me feeling shortchanged, as opposed to longing for more. As a long time fan since the early days, I always hope for a show tinged with the tantalizing sensation of excitement mixed with unknown potential, where the band and crowd connect at unusual levels and all are left in a frenzy of music, dance and sublime joy! Obviously I expect too much since I was completely let down in the joy department. Actually the Mamouna Tour in Berkeley was exceptional compared to this limp version. Possibly Bryan is exhausted and ready to return home. Sure, I'll make excuses for him, after last night's show I need to make excuses for him. I'm sure all the young things there were in awe... but I'm time tested and traveled. Granted, I do feel quite the critic, yet only because I've come to expect so much more. First there was the folksy female vocalist opener from Toronto - dull, no glamour. Barely audible, whispery little kid voice - give me a real vocalist please...and keep the sing in the shower set at home! She sounded like every other folksy rock chick...BORING!!! Finally the band comes on......I'm front row center.....more like a mosh pit, it's so jammed. Can we have some dancing room please! How about some elegance(I thought that was the epitome of Bryan Ferry)by adding chairs or cafe tables and chairs, as the Warfield does have them. Bryan's choice of back-up singers were poor. Mostly eye candy for the boys. They can't sing! Even the black vocalist(obviously there as the designated soul singer to bolster the other two back-ups)was not very good. I was shocked! I know I sound way harsh, but it is all true, to my dismay. If they spent more time rehearsing than in costume changes, they might improve. It reminded me of the Supremes, without the voices! Like a bad Vegas act. Tacky! Maybe some older, gorgeous, experienced vocalists would be a better choice. And what's up with the hot pink feathered swan drag queen costumes at the end? It just didn't work, it seemed out of place. Bryan rushed through the first set like he had just done several lines of coke, or wanted to get the hell out of Dodge. Thank God for the two fab guitarists and the sax player. They kept things tight and smooth. Very good musicians. Though I must say that Bryan did look fabulous as always, great cufflinks and cool green shoes.Though the show started out lackluster, it improved as it went along...... the point being, I prefer hot from the top. If you are tired and bored, then sing the blues! Will you still love me tomorrow? Once they got the lead out, it rolled along pretty good. There were a few exceptional moments in the second set. Bryan did a costume change into a marvelous gray suit with black sparkle shirt. Elegant and hip as always. The problem is that the show felt tragically hip. That worries me. I want glamour without falseness. The show seemed hollow, cold, detached of emotion......in a word PASSIONLESS. Has the divine Mr. Ferry lost his passion. Now that would be a tragedy! And the audience has changed strangely. Very drab folks with no soul, no dancing, terrible clothes, no glamour...just like the opening act which set the tone and the precedence. Personally, I was embarrassed and left wanting. A preview of Dante's Divine Comedy? The whole show was frantic all right.......frantic to get off the stage by the look and feel of things. Loose the cheap Vegas act Bryan, as it doesn't suit you. On a positive and up-beat note........Bryan pulled it slightly out of the bag, dancing about the stage in rather good form, smiling and even laughing. It seemed as though he had some humor about the evening and decided not to take himself too seriously. I can appreciate that, as it is a quality of humility that I admire. I just can't abide by an attitude of decadent apathy. The show reeked of it. Maybe if Bryan is going back to his roots, he needs to get in the trenches, remember whence he came, and stay in touch with it. Otherwise you have grown into a tired and worn clichi. I thought he might sing Gemini Moon, as we had a full moon in Gemini. He must not have consulted with his astrologer. Love is the Drug, Don't Stop the Dance, and Fool for Love were good. As was Jealous Guy. Either Bryan is feeling a lack of self-confidence or superior conceit, as I found it odd that when he left the stage for the final time he had to prompt the audience and the band to continue to applaud and cheer for him. He actually egged the audience on for more accolades. Sickening! As he exited stage right, he nodded and mugged to the afro-wigged back-up singer to encourage(as he did)the audience to keep applauding....well, whatever floats your boat. Does he think were all blind and stupid? He needn't do this, it is so undignified! And I'm mystified by all of this behavior....what gives? He is usually such a gentleman. I hope it changes for the better as this is one disappointed fan. If next year's tour is this muddled and false, then forget it. Give me heartfelt!!! The bottom line is that it is the Bryan Ferry show and ultimately his vision........maybe he needs bi-focals? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #390 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
