In case there are others who are also interested in obtaining this recording, I'll make five copies of this show available. Borrowing from Grant's tree guidelines, if you would like a copy of this boot, you must: 1. Be willing to send two good-quality blanks and a SASE for your copy. 2. Be one of the first five people to reply to this offer. 3. Reply by Wednesday the 27th. 4. Understand that if you don't hear back from me, you must take my silence as a polite apology, that you were not one of the first five. (But you have nothing to lose in trying!) 5. Reply to me, and not the list. This show was recorded August 5, 2001. Colleen, I'll make one available to you if you're still in need of a copy. Kinda Peter Gabriel-era Genesis with Bee Gees > harmonies. Ah, ok, ok:) I thought there was some other non Italian band with the same name maybe :) They're not much considered critically, but they are, I think, the oldest rock band in Italy and keep on selling a huge amount of records. Though I can say I like some of the oldest songs (maybe not listening carefully to the lyrics, eheh:). Your definition of their FM/Easy rock is funny but enjoyable, though I believe there were prog influences only in the first records. And their songs could resemble much more the Phil Collins post Genesis career (crossed with some Aerosmith, I mean that commercial rock, flavour:) Pierluigi ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 19:18:40 +0100 From: "Pierluigi" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Bryan at the vatican > So when did Bryan convert to catholicism, then? Some notes: The Chicago Theatre: Nice place to have concert ALTHOUGH I wished it had been at the Auditorium a much better place acoustically. I was VERY pissed at the seating arrangements. I thought I was going to be sitting in Row 7(G) per what was printed on the ticket, but it turned out to be Row 27. I paid a $108 total for my ticket! Crowd: With the exception of Andrew and Kim who WERE in Row 7, yes those down front did seem a little bit "stiff". Kind of reminds me of the "lucky" ones from the Roxy show last year. There were a few people dancing at certain points on the sides but for the most part "quiet" until the later parts of the show. I was lucky enough to be sitting in an area where this one guy must have thought it was at a Bryan Adams concert the way he kept shouting out "Bryan Rocks". There was some yelping and chatter during Tara that was way out of place. I wished I was in the "better seats". Oh Chicago.......... Avalon- Nice to meet John O' Brien. The Chicago Martini Club was there. Kelly Weinberg could not make it because she was due to have her baby that weekend! I still have not heard back from her . If had known about the Ann Harbor contingent, we could have met up. Sorry Karen and crew. The Show: Wonderful! The band was excellent. Paul Thompson was hitting steady and hard on the skins. Chris Spedding was great although towards the end he did look a little distracted. Sarah Brown did much better on My Only Love last year during the Roxy show. She did nail Ja Nun Hons Pris. Katie and Anna were undermiked from where I was sitting. I did hear them much better when I bum rushed the stage during the last 4 numbers. I know that they liked that I was dancing right along with them. Lots of smiles were exchanged between us. Hmmm..... Bryan looking just as sharp as ever, was in fine form and his voice just seemed to get stronger. TOIA was a little bit fast but it was good to hear in concert again. Limbo was nice to hear again too. I thought it sounded better on the Munich show. Highlights for me were Tara, Boys and Girls (stunning!), Baby Blue, and ... Wooly Bully!!!. Bully just rocked out like crazy. Wow! I had not heard that one since I was a kid. Sam the Sham would have been very proud. I wonder since he has reached way back for covers maybe he could do 96 Tears. Given the current choice of songs on this tour I think this one could fit quite nicely within the set. I also liked that Bryan did his little jump during LST which prompted Katie and Anna to follow. He WAS enjoying himself. It was over after that but given the wide smiles that Bryan was showing he could have came back and did few more numbers. I liked the lighting in the show and I know that Andrew, our resident lighting expert approved. I got the set list that was on stage that Katie and Anna were using. Nice! Post show: After the show Andrew, Kim and I waited at the stage door ( Lake Street side folks!) for Bryan and crew to exit. Katie, Anna, and Mark Smith (bass) came our first. Katie and Anna complimented me on my dancing as I did theirs. Anna was nice enough to sign my program. Bryan came out next and was gracious enough to sign autographs( Kelly will be very pleased to see her program) and a few guitars. Bryan had that tweed cap on again. Photos were taken. I can't wait to see the photo that Kim snapped of Andrew, Bryan, and myself just before he got into his limo. Andrew, Kelly, Pete Seely and I headed over to Govnor's for drinks and post concert chat. We ran into a few more fans show who all seemed to agree that it was a wonderful show. I did not see the Metro Mix review of the show, but I did see the one in the Thursday Sun- Times that Laura Emmerick wrote (nice photo of him). My favorite quote "he's perhaps the only 6-foot-plus ( huh, I'm taller than him and I'm 6'1) hetero guy who could wear a blue satin suit and not look like a drag queen". Whaaa??? I'm still going to get one anyway. I'll wear it for when he returns. Does anyone know if Bryan is going to do the Jay Leno show again? You folks on the west coast leg will be in for a treat. Jas Prairie Rose: Did not see you at the show, but everyone else did. I had the leather pants on again :)) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 18:01:58 -0800 From: William Sommers Subject: [AVALON] Warfield: The Tour's Token Non-glowing Review Over the course of my 18 years out here, The Warfield and I have had a bit of a checkered history. I've never understood how the aura and acoustics at times work so well (for as varied a list as, oh: Liz Phair, Suzanne Vega, Elvis Costello, Crazy Horse) and at others, well... let's just say it holds the distinction of being the site of the only show I've ever walked out on. Friday night did not fall into the first category. I listened from the pit, from back among the tables and from the balcony. No difference, no sweet spot to be found. Too bad -- I've no doubt I'd have thoroughly enjoyed Martina Sorbara elsewhere, just not mic'ed at The Warfield that night. I came into the affair with almost no expectations, for I'd both learned my lesson over the past two tours and, frankly, been less than thrilled with the set list this time around. And from the opening notes it was clear to me that magic had indeed not chosen to time its appearance at the venue somewhere between the acts. We'd already seen somber looking versions of Lucy and Julia setting up in the intermission, so in some sense it was really just more a confirmation at this point than any form of letdown or whathaveyou. One of the things which fascinated (and frustrated) me about the RM tour was the difference between what the band and the audience perceived. I still recall my unease and (what I read as) unfolding disappointment on TGPT's face when he asked how I liked the 2nd Boston show. Clear even from halfway back in the Fleet Pavilion was the enjoyment on stage; becoming clear now was that they thought they'd been on fire. Caught off-guard and pretty seriously scotch-soaked, I was well into giving him a straight answer before it occurred to me that the moment had called for my diplomat impression. Oops. This was, BTW, backstage after the Concord show. Musically, possibly the finest night of the tour. But you sure wouldn't have known it back there. Hell, here Paul was asking about a performance from two weeks prior, and not a word from anybody in the band about the killer set they'd just delivered! And then down in L.A. the next night, there they were having a blast again, ear-to-ear smiles, while I'm missing the intensity and cringing at technical glitches and muffed lyrics. Really made me think. So this time I settled in with a different mission: to watch the interactions on stage, and simply enjoy the show for what it was. How odd on this go 'round that it seemed it was Ferry who was (eventually) enjoying himself, the rest of the band never quite finding that same groove, resembling professionals merely doing their jobs. There was a moment of anticipation in there when I thought it might belatedly gel -- what with the tempo increasing and Lucy bobbing and singing along to SGIYE, but alas, the spark never caught. I've never claimed to be immune to a certain more gutter-minded curiosity, and I did spend some time watching Katie (more accurately: watching for any interaction between her and Bryan). From my vantage (Lucy side of stage) she seemed somewhat expressionless throughout, but there was this one moment where she seemed to be lightening up, an unmistakable smile in the general direction of a dancing Bryan... Anna broke from her lovely "regular" smile to a huge teeth-baring one, but then Katie's grin suddenly dropped, Anna glanced at her, noticed this and immediately dropped hers altogether too. Hmmm. I don't even care to speculate, but it was an interesting few seconds to witness for somebody who was curious about off-stage band dynamics and their effect on the performances. And I guess this is as good a place as any to mention that once again Chris did almost smile, but immediately turned around as if to hide this crack in his facade. A bunch of you have been raving about MOL this tour, which was THE highlight (or at least one of them) for me at every one of last year's shows (really, go back and read my reviews), so I admit I did still hold on to hope that it would finally allow the evening to transcend. Nope. Not even close. Not even ranking a mention this time. Too short and way, way too rushed (as was the entire affair) -- if anybody's feeding info to the band: SLOW IT DOWN. I can definitely see how B&G has been a highlight for others, but it lacked the same intensity most everything else did. When Ferry's voice gave out during LITD, I knew all that was left was whether we'd get Wooly Bully... my own efforts to draw out "I Thought" half-hearted at best in the face of sure futility. Which isn't to say I felt it was a *bad* show, just nothing special. I can't help but hold up the sheer start-to-finish pleasure of the ATGB Seattle show and the near-perfection of the RM Concord one as measuring sticks for all others. Sure, I had a good time and there were some very enjoyable moments -- that SGIYE one of "almost-ness" above; pretty much anything Mick did; and the new Speddo-included Tara. And hey, the all-too-short Frantic originals segment absolutely rocked! Little else to report. No need for a stage rush at this open-floored venue. Unfortunately no successful meet-ups that I'm aware of, not even post-show. I did get to hang out with one list member, met plenty of other friendly folks and quite unexpectedly got to spend a little time with a friend I hadn't seen since early in the year. I suppose three straight West Coast miracles was a little much to expect... there's always next year? :-) -wfs ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 22:46:55 -0500 From: "John Dillon" Subject: [AVALON] Roxy Music on the Saprano's? Hello all, I hope all is well out there. This evening I sat down with my Tai "take out" to "take in" a bite of television, namely this weeks Soprano's. Now try as I might not to admit it, I must say the Soprano's has me quit hooked. Now I am not much of a television watcher any more, and if it's just me it's just the news, a documentary or two, a movie now and then and occasional comedy show. Ho hum, I know, very low key and all that but I do try to make up for it by hurtling myself at incredible speeds from city to city to see these rock & roll shows and great people I have come to know. Well back to the plot here. So while viewing this week's show, titled "Calling All Cars", I almost fell over as I was pleasantly surprised to hear a direct reference to Roxy Music! Not so much even just a reference but an actual tribute in a way. Any one else catch it? It was subtle. First one to post the correct answer gets a nice CD. Only one entry per household please and no photo copies . Just got in from seeing a great concert at the 92nd Street Y in NYC. Lucy Kaplansky - what a treat-she has a truly incredible voice and she writes her own songs. For those who don't know who she is, I first heard about her from a friend of mine who is into folk music and then learned that Bryan invited her into the studio to record backup vocals on San Simeon. She is on the credits on Frantic. One of the highlights of the evening was, when it was almost time for Lucy to come on stage, I looked up (I had 1st row center seats) and whom do I see but Zev Katz! I went over to him to say hello and told him I had just seen Bryan last week. He was there as well. The other musician was rhythm guitarist, Levine (didn't get his first name). Needless to say, Zev was an added treat to a most enjoyable evening of music! :-) Eileen in Kew Gardens ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #389 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
