The Chicago Theatre is a great venue for a live show -- beautiful '20s restoration and all that. A very appropriate setting for Bryan. Our setlist, too, was the same old scene -- no need to repeat it here. The material in first part of the show is quieter and less flashy but still effective. I thought Bryan's voice sounded better than it did on last year's tour -- maybe all this touring is strengthening him. The tempo picked up with "Thrill" and "Cruel" but the crowd didn't seem to pick up. Ticket distribution for this show was all screwed up and it looked like the best seats had been comped to people who had no idea who or what they were listening to. But they seemed to come alive during the war horses. Most of the crowd was on their feet for "Slave to Love" and that momentum continued to build with "Jealous Guy." Then on to "LITD" and "Strand," which Ferry has got to be sick to death of performing -- but he and the band hammered them out with a fury. "Wooly Bully" was a genuinely bright spot of the show, Ferry looked like he had a great time. Then "LST" delivered without a trace of irony considering the Katie Turner bit. I saw Roxy twice last year. (Philadelphia and Columbia, Maryland) This was the third time I'd seen Bryan perform and I must say his solo show was better than either Roxy performance. He was a lot more animated in Chicago, and took better note of the audience -- low-fiving the front row after one song, grinning broadly after "Wooly Bully." Last year he seemed not to notice the audience. I just got the feeling Bryan enjoys playing in front of his own band more than playing with Roxy. After the show I headed across the street with a few Avalonians for a very pleasant but far too short discussion over cigars and spirits. Half the fun of going to these shows is meeting listmembers. Here is the Chicago Tribune's review of the show: http://metromix.com/top/1,1419,M-Metromix-CriticsReviews-X!ArticleDetail-193 36,00.html I disagree strongly with the reviewer's criticism of "Boys and Girls" as tedious. I thought it was the highlight of the show. Cheers to all and I hope we get a new Ferry album and tour in 2003! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Nov 2002 10:07:40 -0500 (EST) From: Colleen Matan Subject: [AVALON] a few admin items, please First, I've changed the list s*bscription option.
