I was standing near Heather and Linda and heard them call out "KB! Colleen!". That made it easy to find them. I kept an eye on the group below, and after the show, came downstairs, but Lucy was the center of attention, and I didn't get to talk to too many people before we had to go. Review: It's all personal opinion, and it's a little difficult to step back from the excitement for a 30 year RM/BF fan! My friends did NOT listen to the homemade greatest hits CD I made for them prior to the show, So Bryan was pretty fresh for them. Here are the comments: "Does he write any of his own songs?... He makes some pretty weird facial expressions... Interesting dance steps!...I think I know why he chose the women in the band... He's good, but I don't think I would go to another concert." In general, Jill likes acoustic singer-songwriters, and Eddie likes blues, boogie and Johnny Cash, so I didn't expect rave reviews. My wife, however, was more excited than I was, especially every time Bryan looked up at the balcony. "He looked right at me!!" She waved wildly on every glance. They have been having an affair since Avalon. I am a Spedding fan from way back - yes, I own the Wombles record - and Chris did not disappoint. I simply love his economical lead guitar and stoic stance. He is one of the greats, and sadly under-appreciated. He should be on every BF record. There were two highlights for me on the Frantic tour: 'Carrickfergis', because I love the emotion he puts into that song, and 'Boys and Girls', because of the synth doodling, which I have never seen Ferry do before. I was hoping for 'I Thought', but settled for 'Wooly Bully', which is always a fun song, but unnecessary with all teh other 'old covers' they were doing. I've been to 6 Roxy/Ferry shows. This one may have been my last, depending on what new material Bryan does. That may seem like blasphemy, but I really do not want to hear LST or the Strand again, live. I wish he would get off the 'greatest hits live' thing. I want all new stuff! My favorite show so far has been the ATGB show (same place). The enseble, teh musical choices, teh arrangements - simply fantastic. One reason I am drawn to Ferry is his diverse choices and writing. I am 'old school Roxy', and I yearn for Bryan to make records with the new generation of musicians who are 'under the influence'. A collaboration w/ Radiohead would most likely be amazing. That's my two cents. - Herman ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Nov 2002 08:39:02 -0600 From: Karen Swenson Subject: Re: [AVALON] Well??? I was lucky to attend both A2 and Chi., and don't feel it's my place to do lengthy reviews of either. I've also been lurking and waiting! I was thrilled to have "Wooly Bully" back; what a stomper. "My Only Love," never a favorite of mine, has oddly turned into a highlight, with the interplay between Spedding and Sarah truly sublime. The musicians are so tuned into each other for most of the show. One can see Bryan is really enjoying himself, feeding off the crowd's adoration, and thankfully not just "going through the motions." The strangest thing was the placement of Ian Dixon _offstage_ to 75% of the audience in Ann Arbor! I'm hoping for Andrew's take on the lighting if he's still out there. I thought the effects were appropriate and stunning, although I didn't like the way the lights shone on the audience so often. Oh heavens, I'll jump in -- I'd intended to write something earlier, but after a lovely 5-day vacation, work had grown like mold on my desk, and my bosses keep insisting that I actually do something for my paycheck. Vulgarians. Anyway: Given the well-furred reviews of previous shows, I'll hit the highlights of the Ann Arbor show: * The setlist was much the same as previous shows, including "Woolly Bully" but losing "Shame Shame Shame" from the Washington show. * In general, it was fabulous: great atmosphere, energy, and genuine enjoyment coming from Mr. Ferry. As Karen mentioned, he seemed to be having a great time -- much smiling and even playfulness, including a frivolous little leap at the end that was suitably mocked by his backup singer/dancers. * musical highlights (personal opinion, of course): The Frantic tracks come off quite well here. It's an album that -- I'll be frank -- bores me in its recorded version, but comes to life on stage. The most stunning tracks, though, are "My Only Love" and "Boys and Girls" -- gorgeous, gorgeous moments that are all the more impressive because such dark atmospherics are incredibly hard to recreate live. * nit-picks: I have to admit, there was one thing that really, REALLY bugged me all through B&G -- the wood-block percussive track. I thought it might be Katie Turner, since her role in that song was to bang wood blocks together -- I could only think "My God, someone take those things AWAY from her." But she was redeemed, because even during the moments when she wasn't using them, the track was there, most likely some recorded backing track. At any rate, it was mixed in much, much too loudly, and was distracting from an otherwise breath-taking musical experience. * other news of note: the crowd: there was a respectable Avalonian presence in the front rows, and they dashed for the stage at TTOIA -- but were cruelly rebuffed by overzealous bouncers who had nothing better to do. The crowd wasn't up until later in the show -- but enthusiasm was generally good anyway. the venue: can I just say how much I LOVE the Michigan Theater? So beautiful. For those of you unfamiliar, think "1930's Movie Palace, maintained in all its glory." the meetup: One of the highlights of the evening -- an Avalonian crowd of 15 or so met up at Zanzibar (in honor of B.F.'s near-disaster flight) before the show. A Really Good Time was had by all -- though I arrived slightly late (as always), I was able to visit with those at my end of the table, which included the truly delightful Amy & Alan Simonelli & their friend Suzanne. The whole shindig was organized by Mr. Mark Shanahan -- and a big round of applause to you for doing that, Mark. And good call on Zanzibar -- I'm still daydreaming happily about the sauce served with my Moroccan Duck. My best wishes to the others that were there, with whom I didn't get to visit as much -- and Arnie S., could you please contact me off-list about those King Crimson recommendations? :-) There you have it -- the evening in a nutshell. Though, I hope other Ann Arbor Observers will chime in with more details, particularly if they had any luck catching B.F. after the show. Happy Friday, all, Susan P.S. I'm currently listening to "It'll All End in Tears" by This Mortal Coil -- I picked in up while in Ann Arbor, based on the recommendations from this list. All I can say is -- amen, brothers. Okay then -- due to underwhelming response (what is it with these Left Coasters anyway?) and prior-made arrangements, it seems there will be no pre-show meet this evening. POST-show, in absence of consensus at the time of this typing, I suggest any interested parties gather to the immediate left as you exit onto Market Street. From there we (the hypothetical "we" at this point) will traipse off to one of: (a) The bar of whatever hotel the band is staying in (should anyone have managed to acquire such info); (b) Johnny Foley's Irish Pub (244 O'Farrell Street) on foot: turn left up Market one long block to 5th St. left on Cyril Magnin, 3 blocks to O'Farrell it'll be on your left at the intersection; (c) ...or whatever the hell other destination we come up with. I'm off-line from about 4PM onwards. Can be reached by cell (415-516-4937) any time after that (except during live music!). -wfs (oh... who sports a brown ponytail and will hereby commit himself to wearing a black leather jacket... motorcycle type, as opposed to any semblance of fashionable cut) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Nov 2002 23:12:37 +0100 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] BBC Prime: Ferry now At 22.56 +0100 02-11-22, S.
