Thanks, Aleks! The Matts Anderson Band versions are very interesting, especially LITD. Anyone who hasn't heard them - go to the page! For Christmas, there's always the ever-so-slight winter references in 'In Your Mind'...wouldn't a close-mic'ed version (a la 'Don't Think Twice...)of 'White Christmas' be great? Next lister to meet Bryan, please ask. more: I was just listening to _In Your Mind_ - Why didn't it win teh 'Best of' poll? It also avoids the pitfalls that befell the latter. " >..." Here Ferry showed the most crucial skill of an interpretative singer - to deliver anyone's songs as only you can.".. hey, well said. - ------------------------ That was a very good review. Refreshing to read something by a writer that obviously knows a good deal about Ferry's work and who was most likely at the show! I haven't noticed any reviews in The Washington Post regarding the 9:30 show - a pity since it was a marvelous affair. Surely, somewhere, there must be a 'professional' review? I've only a few comments, some not yet noted on this list, with respect to Saturday evening's entertainment: Bryan Ferry began the evening wearing a relatively new suit. It appeared to be fashioned out of a satin material with a midnight cadet blue tone. The trousers tapered snugly to the ankle, crumpling atop pointy, not-quite patent leather, coordinating shoes. So happy he didn't wear the silver bullet. Another pleasant surprise was the notable absence of the cabaret garb - not enough room for BF's tender ladies to maneuver their immense head and tail feathers about the cozy stage. I readily attest that absolutely no aspect of the show suffered at the loss of those tried and tired plumes of yesteryear. There was proof positive in the front row affirming the seductively of Ferry's music - the couple just nine o'clock of me were well into foreplay long before the show ended. Two shows, two different stages, I intermittently watched the woman's companion kissing, licking her neck, his gentle caresses along so called zones of erogeny - comic, really. Again, Chris Spedding, the consummate stoic guitarist - excellent player, so understated and illusive. Heartbeat, a mystery, indeed. Paul Thompson is where the beat's really hot. The bass player does great justice to material from "Bete Noire" and "Boys and Girls". Julia and Lucy continued to amaze. Sara Brown's talent was given fine showcase compared to last year's tour. Loved the white 'cat-in-the-hat' hats worn by the young'uns. Ian Dixon's a character, too bad he was tucked into a tiny corner of the stage. Bryan Ferry nattily played synth while at the keyboards giving "My Only Love" grand sweeping atmosphere. Rapt in the moment I felt lack of no want, it all was there. Perfect. From "The Only Face" to the tongue-in-cheek "Let's Stick Together" I smiled, danced, laughed, howled, clapped and sang. A moth to the flame, I never got near enough, I'll try again; the show ended, I wanted more: Come Back! Anytime! I'm in a trance! Welcome, Matt! He, he, he - Get off that stoop and come on in! (Sorry, couldn't resist.) "Pilloried at the post and listening for the lash"? Quick! Somebody call Joel Peter Witkin! - We've another poser! Best wishes, All. I thought all Geordies were footy fans. Isn't that right Jocelyn? Well all the ones north of the Tyne are (even if they end up on another Continent like Helen) And by definition, if you're South of the Tyne you're a plastic Geordie and therefore excused (and any further South, a Maccum and therefore executed). I often feel sorry for poor old PT, I know he's not a Toon follower but still proceed to bore him whitless with the progress (or otherwise) of not only our first team but also the reserves and the academy boys. TGPT in turn feigns being in a coma. While I'm here I would also like to doff my hat to the utter graciousness of our Dutch friends in football defeat. Not only have they wished The Toon the ultimate success in the Champions League after our victory over the mighty Feynoord last week (fat chance with our draw but a great excuse to gallivant off to Barca and Inter Milan) but Joep also sent me a promised consolation prize even though we won. So many thanks to Joep, Ed and Dick, you're all always welcome at St James' Park. Now back to some lazy sod in winkle pickers. Paula http://www.chartattack.com/DAMN/2002/11/1912.cfm LIVE: Bryan Ferry Tuesday November 19, 2002 @ 06:30 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff November 10 Hummingbird Centre Toronto, ON By Joanne Huffa Style and substance are rare companions, but when they do chance come together, the result tends to be sublime alchemy. That,s not to say that anything was left to chance when one-time Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry hit the stage of Toronto's Hummingbird Theatre November 10. Quite the opposite, the suave middle-aged man took the stage alone to play the piano and began a set that featured predominantly covers and standards, including "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and the traditional "Carrickfergus." In a move reminiscent of The Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense, Ferry's band took the stage one or two at a time, slowly building up the pace along with the numbers. By the time the entire band (including pleasant surprise Chris Spedding) was on stage, the tone was more upbeat with Ferry showing that it only takes a nonchalant arm movement and a slight hip sway to be the coolest dancer in the room. The music, of course, was excellent. Ferry surrounds himself with the best of the bunch. That the best women were all incredibly lithe, beautiful and immaculately attired while the men (barring Spedding who sported well-heeled Teddy Boy chic) were all significantly less handsome than Ferry and wore black t-shirts and dress pants is also no surprise given Ferry's well publicized love of stunning women. Maybe the juxtaposition made the numerous middle-aged men in the audience with their young, female escorts more comfortable. Regardless of who was playing, the show was seamless. "Slave To Love," "Do The Strand," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "Let's Stick Together" were all introduced at just the right time to provoke spontaneous applause from the audience and shrieks of "You kill me!" from the horny woman behind me. Perhaps the most telling element of the performance is that Ferry's voice actually sounds better live than on record: something few contemporary hit makers can boast. So, while I wish Ferry would even up the male to female eye candy ratio (or at least not put his already sexy back-up singers in showgirl feathers), with music this great and a performance this flawless, Ferry live is about as close to perfection as you can get. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 01:41:42 -0500 From: "Keith Shockley" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Best Live Album - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, November 15, 2002 10:51 AM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Best Live Album Call me old school but nothing tops Hendrix Band of Gypsys......
