Twas a dark and rainy night ... really - rainy all day! The DC Avalonians met up at the Bua Thai Resturant (thats "Bow Tie") - it a bit off Dupont circle - Fabulous food & drink ... Richard, Matt, Don and Doug arrived first and held down the reservations - KB, Emma and I arrived a bit later, then Linda and Christopher ... Food and drinks ensued ... more conversations ... Dinner done, we cleared the table and went down to the bar for more conversations. Too soon it was time to go - back into the rain for a cross town drive to the 930 club. A half hour wait in the rain, but - we met up with M - the stories are true - elegant as always! Then doors opened at 9 and we made a mad dash for the balcony! Strictly Standing Room Only on the main floor -= hey - there's no seats at the 9:30 club! Martina Sorbara was on at 9:30 and played around 40 minutes ... electric piano, guitar - fun stuff - We saw Colleen arrive, with Johnny Reece, John O'Brien and John Dillon - they came up and we chatted a bit - then - dim the lights ... Ahhh ... The Only Face - Bryan on piano, Lucy with a hint of violin - excellent! As the show progressed, the band filled out ... big applause when The Great Paul Thompson took his seat ... Nice versions of The Thrill of it All; and Tokyo Joe; Limbo; Boys and Girls; and Slave to Love - fine treats ... Shame, Shame Shame - never cared for it on LST but actually enjoyed it live - nicely done! Throughout the show, Bryan was having a lot of fun - laughing and jumping around on stage ... the band had great energy - this was everything the Roxy Tour should have been last year. And - near the end - Bryan got a mischevious smile on his face and shouted out "Wolly Bully" and the crowd went wild. Well - there were some folks near us who didn't seem to get it, but - what mad manic energy - just let go and dance! Definately a "Frantic" moment! Took a while to leave and while of the gang was dealing with coatcheck - I waited out front and off to the side - and after a bit the band started to trickle out. I didn't see Chris Spedding ...sigh ... but I got to thank Lucy for the great show; I thanked Sara for her great work; and thanked Paul so much for his marvelous playing! A bit later and the crowd swelled - Bryan hopped about the minibus and turned to the fans for autographs - - quite a cluster with umbrellas and such - but I had a moment and as passed over my mini-LP remaster of Mamouna I said - "please, it's your masterwork ..." A BETTER THAN GREAT show! Better be careful I'll use all of my superlatives at once. Better than NYC. I knew a small club would be the place for the band to literally tear the roof offa the sucka'. KBP, )-(eather, Linda & Christopher (not Chris) Don & Dave from Carolina & my DC friend Matt (who wants to join the list) Rain, wet line for the show. Got in, and planted my big-ass-self firmly stage left. The whole joint would have fit onstage at the Beacon, NYC. In NYC the monitors were 6 feet from the edge of the stage, here at the edge. You could have touched BF or Ms, "Foxy" Brown if you'd really wanted to. (Love that 'Fro.) Made sure we had a good spot. Met Colleen, Reecy, John Dillon, and the ever glamorous M, among others. Finally saw Martina Saraban(sp) quite good. She said we were close enough to see up her nose. Quite true. Then... dim the lights, you can guess the rest. Un-Friggi'n -Believable. Great show is an understatement. In a place so small the band & BF were so intimate with the crowd how could it not have been? Killer set, same as NYC, but better, Or was it the drugs? (antihistamines) and FOUR, Count em, Four encores. I yelled myself raw for Woolly Bully, a special favorite, & something I've never heard BF do, during the whole show. When they started up with Shame, Shame, Shame my heart sank a bit cause I thought it was a substitution. Still not bad and something I hadn't heard before live, But then .... Obviously my pow-wow with the Chosen One in NY worked? (like I have any pull at all, right?) don't be L7 c'mon & learn to dance...so let that be a lesson, of what you should do, find yourself somebody to bull the wool with you! Whew, I'm exhausted just writing this! No festivities after the show for this boy. Did say hello to Katie & TGPT, just out walkin' around with a drink. The Moscow gig was BF & the acoustic musicians, only. A show for Audi. Philly IS to be rescheduled for Jan supposedly. So enough of my blathering. Despite those annoyances, they were uniformly charming and hilarious. Then again, as the gentlemen were already conveniently all already named "John" (Dillon/Reece/O'Brien), what else would you expect from them? After a few cordials, a quick dinner, and some dry clothes, we set off for the venue. It was packed and so our first stop was the bar to figure out what Plan B would be (Plan A having been "Walk up to the empty front and claim a place"). As we were making the drink decisions--first things first, after all--John (I can't remember which one) pointed up to the folks the balcony waving and yelling my name. I turned to him and said "I don't think they're waving at me." I looked again and quickly realized it was Linda and Heather, and once I'd squared away my (later abandoned) umbrella at the coat check, we squeezed along the balcony to join the Avalonians aloft. A quick hello to the Avalonians and friends gathered upstairs for it was time to stake out a place on the floor. I never stand close any shows at the 9:30 Club or similar venues--I don't like the feeling of the artist watching me during the show. Then I remembered Mr. Ferry doesn't open his eyes during the show, so I knew I was safe. Besides, given who I was with, I really didn't have another choice. The packed venue offered a challenge which we were up to as somehow we ended up in the second row, with no raised voices or threats ensuing. Up there also materialized KB (who I hadn't seen sneak down front ;-)), Richard, Don, and friends. I knew were were in with The In Crowd when I recognized the back of this guy's head from the Apollo DVD. He wore his fame lightly, and well, for he didn't block my view despite his height. About this time I suggested that perhaps we'd really had enough of fun at the show and perhaps we should just go back to the house where we could lounge in comfort. JO'B helpfully reminded us that that he'd already played most of the set list for us back at home in the music room so what we were about to see would be only a repeat. Then the lights darkened, and the show began. I know a few of the folks with me had some doubts about the venue when they walked in, but I think they were pretty thoroughly dispelled by the emotion and intensity of the show we saw and I think a great deal of that was due to the 9:30 Club (Lucy said as much to us when she joined us afterwards). Some of you may recall that I've been rather, uh, parsimonious with my praise of Mr. Ferry these last few years. Well, whatever the inspiration, he put on a fantastic show last night. What surprised me the most was the muscle that the current lineup puts into the songs, especially on the new songs like "Cruel" and "Baby Blue"--they're entirely different animals. The show was tight AND fun, intense and relaxed. The band, and Mr. Ferry, were actually there, in the moment. That was not the experience I had for 1.5 of the 2 Roxy shows I saw last year. I mean, Chris Spedding was smiling--no, GRINNING*--during the last part of the show. I do have a few nits to pick--but only a few. "The Only Face" was a bit rushed, and "Don't Think Twice" a bit stiff, although both were still lovely. Carrickfergus was wonderful with Chris on guitar, and then one of the highlights for me, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." Just beautiful. And then followed by one of my other favorites, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." I was a bit skeptical about "My One and Only Love" but the segue from it to "The Thrill of It All" was simply brilliant. And with "The Thrill of It All" and everyone in the band forming a wall of noise in front of Ferry--magnified by the setup of the 9:30 Club's stage--we were now in a whole new show. As I noted this morning "My Only Love" went off. I can't explain why because with these kinds of things you really had to be there. But by that point everyone had really settled in on stage is the best I can do. It was great to hear (and see everyone moving to) "Limbo" and then the masterpiece of "Boys and Girls." That was one of those moments where you wished the encore could the repeat of a particular song. That whole section from MOL to BAG was so fantastic that the appearance of the oldies but goodies section--"Slave To Love," "Jealous Guy" (where JO'B deputized me as Jocelyn's stand-in), and "Love Is The Drug" welcome. I have to admit I was surprised how much I welcomed hearing them. When I go to shows I sometimes try to imagine what the folks there who know nothing about the artist think about what they're seeing, and the opening and encore to the show definitely showcased Mr. Ferry's talent at doing covers. I suppose the purist in me would to some point rather have more original songs performed; but the pragmatist in me notes that the enthusiasm brought to these covers really fueled both the band and Bryan--the encores were really wonderful. No one wanted to leave and in fact the crowd continued to clap and stamp for another set of encores even after the music came back up after the show--I'd not seen that previously with a Ferry performance. It was also a return to form of the Ferry I'd seen years ago--engaged in the performance at hand, and not just counting the number of songs left to play. The 9:30 Club had been the first show of the _As Time Goes By_ tour and that topic came up while we were chatting with Lucy. And with her assistance I was was finally able to resolve a long-standing bone of contention that John Dillon and I have been carrying for a few years now. Come to think of it, that might have been my favorite moment of the night. Actually it wasn't--that had to be when Mr. Dillon introduced me to Paul Thompson. What a delightful, charming man--I'm still smiling today thinking about it. >From there we'd decided to head out for something different--to go have a drink--and while I normally abstain from Demon Rum, since what I was drinking (following Reecey's cue that evening) didn't have any rum in it, I was safe. I haven't been in a bar during Last Call for quite sometime now (my birthday weekend this April in Dublin doesn't count [oops, another list, another story]) and we managed to find one where the clocks had been set back an hour or so. Johnny and JO'B had been positing certain theories about barmaids and the lure of a Scottish accent, and I think they might have hit paydirt for after Last Call a bottle of champagne suddenly appeared in front of us so we could celebrate a personal milestone. Then it was home for sleep, but before sleep, they boys wanted coffee (yeah, I don't understand it either). None of us really wanted to go to sleep and I have to give JO'B much credit for keeping the level of conversation up. You know how it is--at some point you end up gossiping and talking about sex--but he kept our minds out of the gutter with a truly fascinating treatise about the invention of the pencil sharpener. You are really never at a loss when you travel with Avalonians. This morning, after too little sleep (we finally called it quits about 5:00 am), the incident I had with Johnny was just a hazy memory (although just once I'd like to have a visit with him which doesn't at some point deteriorate into shouting), and after breakfast and more coffee, it was time for everyone to hit the road. Unlike the last time Reecey and JO'B and I were together, we didn't have a mad scramble for the bus and we all managed a proper good-bye. Or at least JO'B and I did as we were then off for an abbreviated rain-soaked tour of DC and then onto the airport. It was a whirlwind weekend, but it was a great deal of fun. Not to mention a really good time. My thanks to everyone made it such a great time-until we all meet again! Colleen *My attorney has advised me that I must say Chris was allegedly grinning. It was good to see some of you again and meet more Avalonians. I was ordered back to my seat a couple of times but I kept going back to the stage. I had to dash off afterwards since I had to get to DC in the early afternoon to see my other fave band, The Divine Comedy, since it was their last show of the tour. It was strange to go to a concert in the afternoon. Even the band found it strange. Neil remarked that it was tea time and even drank a cup of tea. Then back to my friend's place to change and see Bryan. The DC show was amazing! So much energy and a couple of changes to the setlist. I considered not going to DC at all (too tired) but my boyfriend packed me off to Penn Station, insisting that I would regret not seeing my two fave singers if I didn't go. It was great meeting even more Avalonians. Again, I had to leave so that I could catch the train back to NY today to spend my birthday with my boyfriend. It was a great b-day weekend - spent with my three fave men!!!!!!!!! M ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There was a young woman called M Who sat on Viggo Mortensen * He said, "Well M, my dear!" "Your waist brings such cheer" "I'll not look at another again!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * A real-life event! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 23:47:12 EST From: Gal410@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] NY and DC In a message dated 11/17/02 11:11:32 PM Eastern Standard Time, m@land-of-m.com writes: > It was a great b-day weekend - spent with my three fave men!!!!!!!!!
