And we were not going to sit for Cruel, and though the incredibly pretty Ja Non Hons Pris/Fool for Love segment led some to sit, others just swayed-but we were all up for the surprisingly warmly received Tokyo Joe.OK,so I saw Steve's survey when I came back,so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise people were singing to it.My Only Love is a great example of how the counterpoint of guitar and voice can build tension. And it makes me think of The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd from their Dark Side of the Moon album, though I would probably have to listen to that again to see if the comparison is right. And Tara was the last respite for the audience-and for Bryan too,for after that from the slithering line of Limbo thru the visceral ghostliness of Boys and Girls, from the funkadelic Slave to Love, thru the still emotionally searing Jealous Guy( I still find the whistling so sad)...well the audience,Bryan, and this narrative were all running out of breath. Love is the Drug gave us flowery dancers and a great audience response-'Oh-OHH'. Do the Strand ended the regular show with even more audience dancing,I noticed this great looking brunette who had come to the front doing this hypnotic, against the beat dance to it.And she had these blue eyes that just held my attention, and I just wanted to go over to her and stare into them and..oh,back to the concert-but of course you can't separate one from the other, one joy of the concert experience is watching the crowd and performer interact. For those who like to watch, and that's what we are all doing,it's the ultimate vicarious experience. And then, the end? The performers, all on stage, pointing up at the end of Do the Strand. But of course there was more,It's All Over Now,Baby Blue made me think of that blue-eyed girl, but I forced myself to look back to the stage.Let's Stick Together ends it for good. And Bryan is really dancing..and really, really sweating-as we all are by then.I look over to the guy with the turtleneck, and he must be really sweating, but he doesn't seem to mind as he appears to be doing the bump with the blonde who had rushed the stage some time back. And then it was over. And the roadie came out and took the sheets from the stand Bryan had been using, and we all knew that it was finished. Well,I and no doubt every member of this list could suggest changes in the set list, but what I saw was an amazingly well thought out, artistically successful show.As well structured as any song lyric, this show was a complete success-even the audience played it's role well. And I didn't even talk about the Rockette style kick Anna gave...oh my god... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 05:02:01 -0500 From: "Alan Carl" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Comments on Martina Sorbana? Ever since I spent time in high school, strutting and fretting my way thru singing a solo of 'Paint Your Wagon',I have had the upmost respect for any person who chooses to make a living singing (or acting) upon the stage. And so I have always tried to see any opening act,if they are going to take the risk of looking like a fool,I feel compelled to see them. And so Martina Sorbana took the risk.Opening to an even more sparse crowd than normal-a major rain storm had turned traffic into a horror, with some roads flooded-she bopped out and started to sing while playing keyboards(she plays guitar too). And she was pretty good.I knew nothing about her, didn't want to check M's internet link about her beforehand.I wanted to go with absolutely no pre-conceptions.Is she country?-she sounded like she had a twang in her voice-but maybe it's just folk.Or some sort of strange brew-type mixture. She said she was from Toronto, but that doesn't rule out country-no doubt she would be annoyed to be compared to other artists, but no doubt comparisons will always occur, the singer she reminds me most of is Kasey Chambers, the Australian country singer.Australia has country western singers? Go figure. It's the way she phrases words that struck me the most, she said the word "screwdriver" in such a way that I wanted to go to my knees and start to worship her.Or at least buy her drink after drink and then she could completely dis me.But that's the theme to another of her songs-which isn't on her album.Which I bought..and which she signed.Cool. And get this--she has a song called "Casanova". So just for that, she is worth getting there early to see. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 6:12 PM Subject: [AVALON] Comments on Martina Sorbana? > Greetings to all. > > I haven't noticed any commentary on Bryan's opening act Martina Sorbana. > What did you think? > > Thanks, > Diane ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 05:16:58 -0500 From: "Alan Carl" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Comments on Martina Sorbana?(sic) Wait,wait..well that's embarrassing her name is Martina Sorbara--- Diane set me up!!! Not sure which paper because the article was sent to me by a friend of the writer. By Kevin Ransom News Special Writer It's safe to say that Bryan Ferry, perhaps more than any other pop artist of his stature, has mastered the concept of irony. It began when he was the singer and lyricist for Roxy Music, one of the most inventive and exciting bands of the last quarter-century. Onstage with Roxy, Ferry was often nattily attired in a white dinner jacket and loosened bow tie, looking every inch the decadent, aristocratic dandy - crooning in fluttery, deadpan fashion about heartache and romantic longing. Meanwhile, behind him, bandmates Phil Manzanera, Andy McKay and Brian Eno were unleashing a furious progressive-rock din, full of atonal guitar bursts, shrill sax blasts and eccentric synth blips and burps. And his mates' sartorial sense could best be described as Intersteller Freak Show. And Ferry's songs were filled with hilarious irony, such as "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," in which Ferry broodingly describes the architecture of his dream home, and pours his heart out - to an inflatable doll. Or "Do The Strand," when Ferry showed off his wonderful sense of wordplay with lyrics that lampooned dance crazes - "Tired of the tango/Fed up with Fandango?.....Weary of the waltz / Mashed-potato schmaltz?" - before encouraging us to try his latest new step?."Do the Strand-ski." And we always wondered: Was this delicious sense if irony and deadpan drollery an artistic construction, which required great craftsmanship? Did they work hard to "create" this thing? Or did it just spring, fully formed, from the mind of a true eccentric? "I think that's just the way I am, the say I see the world," says Ferry, who brings his solo act to the Michigan Theater on Monday. "Music is very emotional, and singing songs is a very emotional thing to be doing - and when you look at something that's emotional like that, it's easy to see the irony of certain things." After a Roxy career marked by singing eccentric, revved-up tunes that split the difference between prog-rock and glam-rock - tunes like "Remake / Remodel," "Virginia Plain," "Editions of You" and "All I Want is You" - almost anything Ferry sings is now going to sound ironic. Take, for example, "As Time Goes By," his 2000 recording of sentimental, '30s-era jazz standards. Taken alone, these are beautiful recordings, stripped of artifice. But knowing what we know about Ferry, it is impossible for us not to bring our sense of him to these songs. That doesn't make them any less enjoyable - in fact, it makes them work on two levels - the sentimental level and the ironic level. Now comes Ferry's follow-up to that disc. His latest effort is dubbed "Frantic" and it is one of the rockingest affairs of Ferry's solo career. Often, his solo discs have glistened with the veneer of late-night seduction music - probably to counterpoint his work with Roxy. (Although is should be said that Roxy's last three albums were fairly slinky affairs.) "What is interesting, I think, is that, as I have grown older, there's been less emphasis on the irony of things, less of that double-take that I used to do," says Ferry by phone from his home near London. "I think I've become more and more direct, and I think that's the main characteristic of this record - I think it's one of the most direct things I've ever done." The album commences with an earthy, organic version of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." Ferry remakes Dylan's pensive folk missive as a rock song, with the drums mixed high, and a stabbing string section that recalls early-period Electric Light Orchestra. Chris Spedding's guitar strafes with appropriate bite, and Ferry even produces a harmonica solo during the middle section. "I wanted to do it live, very heartfelt, not over-designing it in any way," says Ferry, who, on "Frantic," also renders Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" as a stripped-down piano ballad. "It's one of his masterpieces," says Ferry of "Don't Think Twice." "Doing it with piano instead of guitar brings a different feeling to it, somehow." On "Frantic," Ferry also delivers Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene," mostly irony-free, and re-works another blues tune -- Freddy King's "Goin' Down" - better known to classic-rock heads via Jeff Beck's version. Former Roxymate Brian Eno also plays synth on two tracks. "I love working with him, and I love his eccentricity. He's very opinionated, and I like that. I think we complement each other well," says Ferry. This is Ferry's second tour in 18 months: Last summer, Roxy Music went out for the first time in 17 years, and their show at DTE Energy Theater was probably the highlight of the summer concert season. "I think what I enjoyed the most was doing the early, edgier stuff," says Ferry, mirroring the opinion of longtime fans who preferred Roxy's earlier, more eccentric material to the later, loungier stuff. Ferry says Roxy is committed to releasing a live album of the 2001 tour, and has already released a live DVD in England. There was talk in the press of another Roxy studio album, but that was mostly a creation of hopeful critics. On that topic, Ferry is playfully and enticingly non-committal. " I loved going out with the guys again. It was fabulous to feel that kind of excitement coming from the audience every night," he says. "Phil and Andy played beautifully on that tour, and it would be great to do something with them in the studio again. "But don't tell them I said that." - ----------------------------------------- (on natasha) Privileged/Confidential Information may be contained in this message. Many of those fans evidently voted, somewhat curiously, in the negative when they considered last night's $55.50 ticket for what would be a 90-minute set at the Orpheum Theatre. The balcony was just about empty and the house was just more than half-full. What did we get? Certainly, a show that did not have the firepower of Roxy, nor a show that had the hairpin twists and turns, the ever-dangerous balance of cacophony and elegance. But we did get something that still registered high and poignant on the adult-rock scale. This was the Bryan Ferry revue, as much of a cabaret performance as rock show, and you couldn't miss the ache in the softer songs and the romantic yearning most everywhere else. He has shed virtually all the irony and camp that defined his early solo career. Last night's concert began with something sad, quiet, and intimate with Ferry alone at the piano for ''The Only Face,'' singing ''I want to be alone/Just be myself/No one else'' as violinist Lucy Wilkins joined in. Other band members - pianist Colin Good, guitarists Chris Spedding and Mick Green, among others joined bit by bit, as Ferry constructed a towering set of ineffable melancholia, highlighted by Bob Dylan's ''Don't Think Twice, It's All R ight'' and ''Carrickfergus,'' which featured a gorgeous harp-driven melody and Ferry's sigh, ''My days are numbered/Come on you young men and lay me down.'' Are we on the edge of the cliff yet? Drummer Paul Thompson finally came on for ''Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,'' and registered a kick drum thump (yay!) to provide the pulse for the snarling-as-it-gets ''The Thrill of It All.'' Ferry's three singer-showgirls also appeared, one of whom, Katie Turner, has been named by the London tabs as Ferry's new squeeze. (Ferry is separated from his wife of more than 20 years.) Ferry, still sexy at 56, is bolstered by his sense of style and his image, which is suave and dignified but approachable and warm. He scored with several Roxy numbers - his definitive version of John Lennon's ''Jealous Guy,'' ''Love is the Drug,'' ''My Only Love,'' and ''Do the Strand '' - and closed with ''Let's Stick Together,'' a particularly interesting choice given his marital status. Barry Manilow edged out of #1 by the Bay City Rollers, DARN The only two in the top 20 to have ANY interest for me is the Ohio Players' LOVE ROLLERCOASTER (say what?) loved the way their singer had a conk version of the omnipresent MULLET, & would wear a sleeveless top with a hood. (must'a been cold) and would inject the word CHILE in wherever he could. Also all the Players listed their Zodiac signs next to their album credits. Hot Chocolate's YOU SEXY THING also has a soft spot in my ... heart. Ever want a good laugh, rent Mahogany the Diana Ross vehicle. (call me Miss Ross!) (#3 THEME FROM MAHOGANY (Do You Know Where You`re Going To) /Diana Ross) The decadent drug-dreanched high-life of the fashion industry. Ah nostalgia. The scene where Miss R is so messed up that she does a hot wax treatment during a party is a riot. Even better is where Tony Perkins is so obsessed with her that he crashes the car while making her pose for his camera. All turns out right when Billy Dee Williams comes back to the sadder-but-wiser Diana. Another inmate of the film lab I worked at the time frequented strip bars.He & his buddies would drive the Go-Go dancers crazy by playing Paul Simon's 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER over & over. (#22)hard one to jiggle to, I hear. 50 GOLDEN YEARS/David Bowie Decent showing eventually, inferior song 80 LOVE IS THE DRUG/Roxy Music Our boys workin' hard in the land of the Philistines, and getting no respect. 85 BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ Queen No Comment, make up your own crack. and some of the more popular selections of Muzak now playing in Hell. 4 CONVOY/C.W. I for one think that Paul Simon is one of the most talented American artists to come out of the 60's.Unike most of them he is still relevant today. I love art Garfunkel's voice on the Breakaway album (some trivia, one of songs Art covered, called Breakaway, comes from the same Gallagher and Lyle cd as do Heart on my sleave. Graham Lyle in 1984 wrote "What9s Love Got To Do With It" with he teamed up with Terry Britten for Tina Turner as well as abunch of other songs for her. And speaking of covers, has anyone heard: Love Is the Drug covered by Divinyls Slave To Love covered by Tony Hadley Another great song on that 1975 list is: 28 HURRICANE (pt. 1) by Bob Dylan. Great movie with Denziel Washington too. My two cents. NP Eric Gadd, Never before. "Let's Stick Together" was the biggest and went all the way to number four, and sounded as though it was a reworking of Canned Heat's biggest hit from 1970 "Let's Work Together". But, Bryan claimed the composer's credit. When you really think about it, it couldn't have been a cover of "Let's Work Together" anyway. Bryan always looked far too tired to even think about work. But he did work at persuading then girlfriend "Jerry Hall" to appear in the promo. Bearing in mind that the UK had a scorcher of a summer, and that drought, I recall 'David Hamilton' introducing this song on Top Of The Pops, and making a remark along the lines of "We can hardly do anything else but stick together in this weather". The song returned to the chart in 1988 and reached number 12.
