He repelled all subsequent rushes, finally relenting on LST, but only after he and one of Bryan's roadies got into a bit of a shoving match. I got the timing right for that last push. While waiting after the concert by the Stage Door, the same bouncer (I think) was there. I could have sworn I overheard him say to a fan that Bryan and Katie were engaged!!!??? Anyone know more? Maybe he was just full of it. Anyways, Katie and one of the other dancers (not Sarah Brown) eventually appeared and left. About 10 minutes later Bryan appeared, signed a few autographs, and left alone in his limo. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 21:55:35 EST From: Avalon887@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Re: Bryan at Museum of Television & Radio in NYC Did anyone hear about Bryan doing a radio interview at the Museum of Television & Radio this past Thursday morning, 11/7? A friend of mine called me early in the week to tell me that WFUV (Fordham University's radio station) was giving away a few pairs of tickets to this rare interview, to members of WFUV. He tried to get them for me, as did I, but we were unsuccessful. I was wondering if anyone else heard about it and if anyone was lucky enough to experience it! I can't believe this sentiment has gone unchallenged for 12 hours. "SFE" did not make my top 10 list, but I nonetheless consider it one of Roxy's high points. Andy was allowed to come into his own (as co-composer and key musician) for IMO the first time on a Roxy album. The general theme of the piece is grandiose, yet does not cross the border into pretentiousness. As a composition, the piece has several distinct parts, "micro-movements" if you will, although closer to traditional song form than any earlier numbers (i.e. verse/chorus/verse/chorus.) The sax solo and the final moments featuring Bryan's whistling are some of Roxy's more memorable instrumental moments, although I could have done without the rather glitzy extended intro played by Colin last year Ferry is at his emotive vertex, with a flawless and spellbinding vocal. This is the finest example of his lower vocal range on at least the first three albums. He exposes the listener to his favorite theme of profound despair after a love is lost forever, the twist of course being the amour in question is a continent, not a woman. (There is a case to be made here that perhaps he is grieving the loss of a lover and paralleling it to the decline of Western civilization.) The images form clearly before the listener's eyes; he is speaking of ages passing and crumbling into ruin; nothing of substance to fill the emptiness. We mourn with him. "Jamais, jamais!" we echo. (J'ai aime?) I've read criticism that it sounds like a Eurovision song contest winner; that the melody is derivative; the sentiment corny. But it still stirs me. At least #2 wasn't LITD or Dance Away. I was shocked. Americans love Siren. Is it because it's a countrified album and is a continuation of the prairie rose style. We all know about Love is the Drug but the other single off that album "both ends burning" has more vitality on viva. Similarly, i thought end of the line lacked vitality and i prefer the version on concrete blonde's album.I too like the start of nightingale(bit like the Beatles)and love ferry's self parody during the song. It's a good song to sing in the shower. peter You'd have to been around HERE and aware the time it was released. There was nothing like it and yes it DID stand out. Yes we Americans who were in the know loved it and I still do. Countrified? Not hardly. Sophisticated, polished, and just classy would have been my take on it. I'm just sorry that I did not see the tour. I loved Siren as I did the others that preceded it. Country Life being my personal favorite. I was hooked at that point and felt a little smug that I had stumbled upon a very good band that most of my friends did not have clue about. As for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, should we be surprised. No. Black Sabbath, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, The Marvelettes, Cheap Trick, The Sex Pistols, etc, etc. etc. did not make it either. What I'd like to suggest to the New Yorkers out there is that the night of the induction why not stage a little protest? Stand outside with big placards stating: WHY NOT ROXY MUSIC? WHY NOT BRYAN FERRY? It may not sway some of the attendees, but it could get some press. Take it to the streets people! ( no not the Doobie Brothers, who will get in way before Roxy too). I hope to see the AVALON contingent enmase that the Chicago Theatre on November 19 Jas ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 03:02:59 EST From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Whoopee!
