How wrong could I have been???!!!! I cannot believe the poor showing by The Bob (Medley) on the poll. I'm distraught!!! I'll never be able to listen to the track in the same way again. Never mind it's nice to be unique for a change. Also quite surprised to see 3 UK single releases in the top 10. Many thanks Steve for all the good work (but you could have snuck in a few more points!!!) Sunset is better than anything on siren. I like Ferry's plaintive cry in the dark on Sunset. It's not as stripped bare as songs by Syd Barrett but it connects with the listener.. Saying that Siren is your favourite album is analogous to fans of the police liking Ghost in the machine most of all. Maniesto is a great song and did ok with 25 votes. Oh gee,but this is fun-like elections,or Steve's survey, when the ego is forced to confront the reality that 'What, the rest of the world doesn't think the one,true,way(a.k.a. MY WAY)? ' And as for the Hall of Fame,it should be noted that the other inductees announced Thursday included Elvis Costello and the Attractions, hardly a big commercial success-I don't believe any of EC's albums outsold the platinum selling Avalon.(Ok stop groaning-but if people are going to argue that sales are all that matter, then why pick a mediocre selling, geeky looking, British Buddy Holly lookalike who was kept off of American TV after changing the song he wanted to play.)And I like EC. But maybe that is a point,Roxy Music didn't have that rebellious streak, like EC,like The Clash(another recently announced inductee);they didn't even have a consistent sound-their first and last albums hardly seem to be from the same group. Many of the people who choose the Hall of Fame who like the early stuff probably couldn't form that crucial voting block with the people who like the late smooth stuff. And cheer up,if they had sold billions of records,we would all be complaining on how we couldn't get tickets to Bryan's current tour. And that would be a boring thread.Totally. But jazz and the blues predate Robert Johnson and Scott Joplin (and Jelly Rll Morton and Fats [Waller] and Billie and and and)--while all of them might have put a stamp on both musical styles, jazz and the blues have their roots hundreds of years earlier, in slave "hollers", in Stephen Foster, in the call-and-response of gospel, and even in the line singing of New England churches. Huh? take a look at http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp and you may need to modify your statement. Also to take that point of view is to deny the exchanges that went back and forth between black and white musicians and to deny the bravery of many white jazz musicians who defied Jim Crow and segregation to work on stage with black jazz musicians. It's as limiting, and as untrue, as saying that the only genuine American music is white. Colleen p.s.
